Long Exposure Waterscapes on a Hurricane-Swept Beach
In this video, I paddle out to a remote island in the Gulf of Mexico, recently affected by Hurricane Ian to capture some long exposure waterscapes. I discuss use of neutral density filters and other equipment needed to apply long shutter speeds (10-20 sec) to create dreamy, minimalistic waterscapes.

Information about filters:
Holders and lens adapter
Lee 100mm filter holder (similar to what I use): amzn.to/3ZOWRpW
You'll need to add an adapter ring to the holder to fit your lens. Search "filter holder ____mm (fill in the blank with your lens diameter) to find the correct size adapter. Here is one for a 77mm lens: amzn.to/3XLJRQc
100mm neutral density filters:
NiSi 10-stop filter: amzn.to/3IXBFYS
NiSi 6-stop filter: amzn.to/3XMXNJp
K&F concept 3-stop filter: amzn.to/3IYlwlX
Circular or screw on neutral density filters are also an option but keep in mind each one is fitted for a specific lens diameter. A 100mm x 100mm filter with a holder only requires a lens adapter which is less costly than a second circular filter. If you do go with a circular, I recommend sticking with a fixed rather than variable filter for quality.

How to Capture High Dynamic Range Landscapes with a Single Exposure

In this video I describe how I capture landscape scenes having a dark foreground and a brighter sky background (high dynamic range) with a single exposure by using the camera's histogram (Live View not required, but it is advantageous). Correct Aperture for Sharpness and Depth of Field

Love that experiment. So a long telephoto (or a super zoom) will not magnify even half as much as a macro that is at the minimum focal distance. Thanks!

It’s a matter of perspective. You can imagine zooming a lens as changing the size of your eyeball and telephoto/macro dictates from what perspective in space in relation to an object that eyeball can focus on it. The magnification can be the same from a telephoto lens but the perspective cannot.

    • @broifyouaskme1448

No. She showed us that the magnification is NOT the same. The zoom lens could only capture 3 inches of the ruler. Whereas the macro lens could capture 1 inch..

I'd say that your test with the tripod and the ruler is irrelevant. To compare the two lenses you would fiirst need to find the MFD for your telezoom at 180 mm, and then place the camera (ie sensor) at the same distance from the subject (in this case the ruler) with the macro lens mounted. Then we can compare the results 🙂

As commented earlier, changing lenses on a mirrorless camera in the field is something I do not want to do, even less so in a potentially dusty environment, so a second camers with lens, or even a third (my sweetie is ok being my photographer’s assistant) might be my kit. I agree with Thomas about babying equipment. Thank you for your tips.

I wish I had know about all this 5-6 years ago. But through trial and error (and reselling several DSLRs), I purchased my first mirrorless camera 4 years ago. One note: at first, I was nervous about buying lenses that weren’t the same brand as my mirrorless camera. I’ve since learn there are several third-party lenses that are both great and budget-friendly. Thanks again and keep vlogging!

What camera do you have? There should be a command dial on top. Adjust it to ‘M’ for manual. With that you can adjust aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you have two dials for changing exposure settings, one can be dedicated to aperture, the other for shutter speed.

Had to get a new computer & now my second external ssd for storage, monitor, monitor calibration device, printer & calibration device for making ICC profiles,(not necessarily needed), ink, ink &, more ink, ($$$). I went all in on full frame Dslr with OEM top quality lenses ,(except for my wildlife lens) with no regrets except the fact sooner or later I will be forced to go to mirrorless. A lot of todays kit lenses are sharper than some of the higher end lenses & much lighter. Just a suggestion & maybe not a good idea since your vid is for beginners. Lens photo samples showing desired sharpness drop off/ bokeh, different focal lengths etc. Just a thought. PS. Worth every penny!
