Do it yourself channel based in Alaska. Come join me as I build a compost bin, a greenhouse, a shed, and outfit a new 24x36 garage. I recently retired and took up woodworking. Not an expert, just someone learning new skills and willing to share them.
Testing Undersized Router Bits
I test 2 sets of undersized router bits, one from Yonico ($26) and one from Whiteside ($62). I actually measured the plywood (.217in) the Whiteside 1/4in (.221) and the Yonico 1/4in (.201). Remember your results may be different. I can take 3 measurements with my cheap calipers and get 3 different results.

“ Get to know your broiler.” That is wisdom.
Thank you for this wonderful video...I am going to make this tomorrow!
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Really appreciate the tutorial, I just gave a like.
Thank you. Ester AK myself, this is a great video.
Thanks for the kind words. I lived in Fairbanks for 7 years...graduated from UAF.
I have the same problem can it be the thermostat?
It could be. I have only 2 wires going to my thermostat for heating. To test, I take them off and twist them together. If it turns on your value then it's your thermostat or the connection to your thermostat.
How is the dust collection? Do you use a shop vac or dust collector?
Dust collection is not good. There are lots of gapping holes and spaces to fill to make it efficient. I have used a shop vac since I bought it; however, I just got a dust collector. I am still working on the duct.
@@AlaskaWorkshop What DC did you get? Will you be doing a video on it?
@@stevesiefken2696 I just put together the Laguna C Flux 1. I hope to get the ducting started next week. No video, I have been enjoying getting projects done without moving a camera around. Not sure when I will ever do another one.
I just bought a similar model jointer and am trying to replace the blades. The wedge that holds the blade refuses to come out. How did you pry it up? Thanks
It was as easy as the video shows. Yours must be rusted in, try squirting some WD-40 on it and let it sit overnight. Good luck.
@@AlaskaWorkshop thanks
very good review, thanks.
Excellent hose and adaptors! Quality hose with smooth interior for least friction loss. Very flexible and adaptors work perfectly for my Makita tools. The quick release saves time and keeps the adaptor with the tool so you don’t have to search and share adaptors.
Yeah, I get it, I have the Kobalt table router and it’s a serious disappointment. Dangerous even!!! The table and the motor are fine but everything else leaves a great deal to be desired. Thanks for sharing your JessEm install experience. Please follow up and tell us how you like the new lift setup. Cheers!
I really liked your down-to-earth instructional approach.
Have you had any issues with balance when the wheel is extended for moving? I need to move my saw in and out of a corner when i want to use it and it's kinda wobbly already. Great build!
Good video, short and to the point. Just curious, from which point do you sync the board to the design - many people use the front left corner. Does it really matter which corner or the middle of the project that should be used??
All my projects start in the front left corner. That is how I draw it up in VCarve and that is where all my bits and wrenches are stored. You can start from wherever you want.
We are moving to Alaska and have visited a few houses with our realtor. As a person who has always been a handyman, I started noticing homes for sale in Alaska with half the lower wall removed and baseboard heaters at the bottom on realitor websites and thought to myself that it could have been a baseboard heater failure? 🤔 so Ive been watching videos and reading about it to have prior knowledge on causes and solutions and hopefully will learn what to look for when visiting homes in the near future? Thank you Mr. Criss for this to the point and well explained video. 👍👍 FJT.
Thanks for the comment. There are a lot of older houses with baseboard heat, mine has been running with very few problems for 30 years. THey seem to do well as long as they are maintained. Good luck in your home search, market is tough these days.
Is the jointer power head a three prong or two
Great video. Thinking about buying a six inch augur for fence posts. Is an eight inch really that much better? I will be setting 4 by 4's for a wood fence.
I did 6 inch holes for my back fence but it was less than 6ft. It has lasted the last 20 years. This fence ended up close to 8ft.
Well I think both of them are beautiful
I am on my way to building one thank you great video
Thanks for taking the time to say so...appreciated.
While you had it apart why not clean it up and get all that sawdust out?
Hi! Thanks for sharing! I’ll use your design to build wrap around planter boxes for my porch pillars. I’ve used 5/8” plywood to make cleats to hang heavy things like solid wood headboards, large mirrors etc.
Now that you have had the unit for a year, do you still like it and has it been trouble free? I have two Jet AFS-1000b's in my 420 sq ft (9' ceiling) shop that have now both failed (admittedly after good use, the first failed at 15 years and the second just recently at 19 years of hobbyist use - maybe 500 hours/yr). The new Jet 1000c units won't easily go in the same space, so I am looking at the WEN 1270 as a replacement, and I might only go with one as a single Jet did fine in cleaning the air at medium speed.
Totally worth it, I really like the timers on it. I set it to run for 2 hours after I am done and I don't have to remember to go shut it down. Been running trouble free, I can only hope I get 19 years!
@@AlaskaWorkshop Thanks. Appreciate the update.
Very nice job. One trick I learned from Rob Cosman is to put CA glue on the exposed MDF. Apply liberally and brush it in. No need for accelerator. It really hardens the bare MDF.
That is a great tip. Thanks for the helpful comment!
Thanks for the review. I just picked up an EGO, same basic machine. It's too powerful for me, it really rips you around, even with the smallest battery, I thought the anti-kickback would work better. I have very rocky soil (hardpan). I don't recommend getting one of these, my thigh still hurts from being smacked!
I agree, sold mine after 24 holes. Don't plan on digging that many again without a skidsteer!
What a beautiful board. It's a real chess player's board - no distractions, simple (and you oriented it correctly, “light is right”). I wouldn't feel too bad about the engraving not standing out, I think it’s better than something in light letters “screaming” during a game. For a display board you can go crazy, but if your intention is to have this board actually used you hit the sweet spot.
Thank you for your kind words. It is well used by now!
Great vid, thanks! I have an old craftsman 113 with cast iron webbed wings and plan to do what you did. My only question is: wont the router wing be too heavy? Will the bolts be enough?
I have a 1x2 bolted underneath to support it. I would not try to support it with screws into the particle board....the hardwood border helps too.
@@AlaskaWorkshop I have trouble understanding the metal inserts and their corresponding bolt/screws. You should do a video on that, your videos are very clear.
Just thought of something else. I always watch my material's reference edge when ripping... to make sure it's not drifting away from the fence. If your material thickness lands in one of those t-slots, you won't be able to see if it's tight against the fence.
You are correct. I didn't even think of it until it happened.
Looks like a good upgrade to the very thin aluminum stock faces. But you had my OCD on overdrive with all that dust in the tube. BLOW that OUT! Wouldn't want any to get between the fence bar and your new t-track face!
Sir when I was upload surfacing program it's going to work one line and suddenly stopped and showing grbl 1.1h for help longmill mk2. Please help me....
The idiot who designed the base needs replacing! You are limited to small-diameter bits. I need it for a 1-inch round-over. The bit is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
I already have a fancy high end Triton for off the table, but its way too cumbersome to put on and off my router table; so Im looking at a cheaper one I can permanently mount up. I saw you make a few comments about the plunge action being crap; and thats a non isssue for the use case for me due to it being mounted in a router lift. Cheers.
Thanks for the great video. You are an excellent teacher
Thank you for taking the time to say so!
3 zone valves with 1 24v transformer. My coworkers making me look like dumb at work. The way they engineered hydronic systems was a crap at work. Hotel😂😂😂😂. A few believes. The engineers are rusty 😂😂😂😂. They don’t know basic electric currents and wattages😂😂😂
6/6/24 this is the best wishing well with directions and blueprints. Your directions were excellent precise it to the point and understanding. I made a couple of modifications and streamlining the roof and side posts for the crank. Used the block stop at a 45 to take one inch off the roof board corners, came out excellent with still a 3-in overhang. Wife inspected and loved.Thank you very much Paul 👍
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the kind words!
“Like I have to use these things” lmao
Can you shed some light on how the panels were attached to the rhino cross bars? Thanks
Hi thanks very much for your video on Jessem Router Lift Install. Could you please tell me what diameter and cutting length pattern bit you used when using your template to cut the final pocket. It looks like 3/4 diameter 1/2" cutting length but wasn't sure. It also looks like you are using 1/2" mdf for your template? I have been having some difficulty after creating my template cutting the final pocket. Thanks.
This is the bit I was using: amzn.to/3V2lC1C Had to buy it just for this project.
Nice ..
As a semi-experienced DIY-er myself, I really appreciated your humility and honesty - I think you might be a little hard on yourself. You didn't mention the priming button in the setup section, did I miss it? Also I really appreciated the tips at the end, those were very helpful. Thank you🎉
Yes, at about 1:30 or so, thanks for the kind words. ua-cam.com/video/P_Zy8Sm--cs/v-deo.htmlsi=Z9ItQH7VxMzcudRO&t=87
Ye Machin Mughe Chahiye
hi, just saw this video on upgrading delta 36-725 T2 table saw fence with t-track. I have the same table saw. I would love to upgrade with t-track but cannot find a t-track to work with the delta fence. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places. Please if you know where I can get the same t-track you installed I would greatly appreciate it. Taylor tools does not have it.
So, no worries, played with the t-track from Taylor tools (I ordered the t-track and tried to install but did not work) I tried it again and it worked not fence adjustments at all. When I originally put it on, I misjudged height. So truly thank you for the video without the video I wouldn't know that there was actually a t-track available for delta table saw.
I bought my Long mill over 2 years ago and that my friend is what I did and exactly how I did it for the fence, except I don't want T-Tracks. Great job
I have changed the fence design since. I have it split so I can slide a longer board in there if needed. Sure wish my spoilboard still looked this good. Might be time for a new one.
Thanks for ding the comparison. I was wondering about the Yoniko bits. I have used Whiteside, Amana, and Freud bits for years. They have always delivered top quality for my work. I will continue to follow the same path as always and stick to what I know has always worked for me in my shop. Thanks again Criss. I think I got that right. Ron .
I feel the same way, you can't go wrong with those 3. It's Mike Criss....thanks for stopping by.
@@AlaskaWorkshop Ok Mike. Got it. Thank you. will be tuning in to check on the nest video.
What about the dust from the saw falling onto the cabinet?
It is my dust collector for sure. The dust collection on this saw is awful. Plan on taping up the seams underneath the saw.
I really enjoy your videos. I see that you have Wen products. Do you recommend the track saw? Right now ,I put the plywood on the floor on top of foam insulation and use the Kreg rip cut guide with the circular saw. It works but the cut is never exact.
I am still using my Wen track saw but like you, I never trust that it will be exact. I cut to within an eighth of an inch and then finish up with the table saw. I am looking to upgrade it soon.
If you’ve got rocks a power auger is not your friend for post holes. There isn’t a hand auger on the market that would be better in this situation.
You are correct
Just subbed! Love your stuff especially about the Delta table saw as I am learning my way around mine.
It's a great saw for the money. Still have mine after 4 years. The project I couldn't do without is the fold-up outfeed table.
Spot on review, I found the same issue! And, for smaller folks like myself, it is a bit on the heavy side.
Yes, I probably should have mentioned that....especially after the 10th hole or so!
I'm glad I found this video. I'll be giving this a shot, and then your collapsible outfeed table also.
I use them both still....I couldn't live without the outfeed table.
Hi - I like the built and, love the measuring tape with the track for the stops. I'm working on configuring a one-car garage shop. My question is, since you've built this, have your ever regretted (might be a harsh word) not incorporating your table saw into the same built for out feed? Thanks, Matt
Hey Matt. My table saw incorporates my router table and has its own outfeed. I like having them separate and they are both on wheels. Works for my shop.
Measure twice cut once lol I use mechanical pencils when I'm doing trim carpentry but yeah a lot of people need to learn this or put the tools down if they are not willing to do it right they shouldn't be doing it
Yep, I go through a lot of lead with my mechanical pencil!
