It is a terrible place to live. People are extremely rude and prices are not cheaper at all. There are only a few supermarkets with inferior products and extremely uneducated personnel. Also you forgot to mention that how bad the water smells because there is no sewer and water seems contaminated. Last but not least street animals are everywhere suffering in the extreme heat and starving.

I live in Chuburna, a small town near Chelem. When he said there was a lack of infrastructure here he wasnt kidding. Constant power outages make it very uncomfortable to live here. There are a few small fruit and vegetable stands and a few stores for basic supplies. If you're thinking of living here, i suggest trying to rent first to see what it is really like. Merida is a much better option if you are looking for culture and plenty activities to keep you busy. Living on the beach is extremely costly due to constant maintenance and in my opinion, more so than the United States. The Yucatan Gulf Coast is beautiful to see but living here is a daily challenge that it needs a lot of consideration before moving here permanently.

As a Canadian Engineer in construction, I thank the two of you for the realistic numbers concerning schedule and cost of building a home in your area. Many other Architects and constructors sometimes just tell their clients what they want to hear which is it will be done in 5 to 6 months and the cost will easily be within budget.

Are the streets pavement or cobblestone? When I lived in Cozumel it was perfect to rollerblade but I don’t want to live in an island again.

I stayed at my cousin's beach house in Chelem. Bottom line, it's a quiet place near the ocean with few amenities but great if that's what you want. It really seemed more of a poor, sleepy, beach town than what this video represents. The locals were nice but the only expat I met was nuts. The shots in this video don't show the town proper. It's a lot more run down than what is represented here. The local restaurants do tend to have fresh seafood and other local goodies. From what I could find, there is only one small grocery store, one convenient store (like a 7/11 type place), and other than that you only have tiny shops or beer stands. This place was great for a week stay, but the idea of an expat spending much more time than maybe a month here is not ideal in my opinion.

I love your video. I am looking into moving/ retiring to either Merida, . Ideally to progreso,chelem areas. I have been in construction my entire life and have the tools and knowledge to renovate a property. I am looking into either long term rental at around 300-500 per month for 1 bedroom with ac. Hi Chuy we are in the process of moving to Merida and will need help to find a rental for 1 year with pool. The big challenge is I have 4 dogs and 3 cats. It is very important for us to have a garden as you can guess. I would like the north of Merida and don't mind if its not a gated community. Im taking my own car so will need parking as well.
