Are "grooming" and "CRT" "linguistic imposters"? [Who blows (or listens to) "dogwhistles"?]
Denis Kazankov, Edison Yi, Linguistic imposters, The Philosophical Quarterly, 2024;, pqae021, doi.org/10.1093/pq/pqae021
Abstract
There is a widespread phenomenon that we call linguistic imposters. Linguistic imposters are systematic misuses of expressions that misusers mistake with their conventional usages because of misunderstanding their meaning. Our paper aims to provide an initial framework for theorising about linguistic imposters that will lay the foundation for future philosophical research about them. We focus on the misuses of the expressions ‘grooming’ and ‘critical race theory’ as our central examples of linguistic imposters. We show that linguistic imposters present a distinctive phenomenon by comparing them to some adjacent phenomena, namely conceptual engineering, linguistic hijacking and dogwhistles. We also address four objections about the extensional adequacy of our definition of linguistic imposters. Finally, we argue that, as linguistic imposters spread, they make some inferences featuring misused expressions more cognitively accessible and seemingly socially licensed to misusers and discuss four types of harms that linguistic imposters are conducive to through these effects.

My wife once attended a meeting at the Sydney Opera House where Nelson Mandela was the speaker, I couldn't attend because of work. She sat next to Tom Uren, a well know labour political figure who fought hard for workers rights and as I understand was a prisoner of the Japanese during WWII. Every now and again I ask my wife to tell me about that day and in that way I feel a connection with both men:Nelson Mandela and Tom Uren.

Thank you for your comments. I respectfully disagree. The system does not work for the indigenous people incarcerated and all those who have either been killed or died (and continue to die) alone in custody since the landing of the first fleet (statistics are frightening) - indigenous children are still being removed from their families at alarming rates. The Sino-Japanese war saw millions of Chinese people die, and the civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists (CCP), which had been ongoing since the 1930s, saw millions more Chinese die in what can only be described as a brutal relentless unforgiving conflict. Nevertheless, the CCP, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, was victorious and has ruled in China since 1949 (either killing, suppressing, or ejecting all its perceived opponents). If the CCP was illegitimate then why did the British Crown return Hong Kong to its control? In the end, it was simply a matter of practicalities. If the then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had not relented then the CCP (under the control of leader Deng Xiaoping) would have simply turned off the water supply to the city and soon after marched into Hong Kong, and there would have been nothing Britain could have done to stop the takeover. Instead, the British Crown returned Kong Kong to the control of China’s government - it was a straightforward political process - the Hong Kong Chinese were abandoned by Britain and the West to their fate - (the same "abandonment" process could take place for Australia). Whether you agree it was legitimate or not, the CCP was and still is (for the moment at least) able to exert political control throughout China. In Australia the British Crown is not yet under such duress. However, should the upcoming “Voice” referendum fail, which it is highly likely to do, (and the AUKUS “submarine” alliance crumble) then where does Australia go from here? If it had not been for the “White Australia Policy” Australia would already have a majority population of Chinese, those descended from the pioneers of the 1800s gold rushes (not all Chinese would have returned to China). As it is, the two largest diasporas in Australia are from “China” and “India”, both of which are now becoming a dominant force in Australian society and politics. It is time to recognise that reality and forge a distinctly indigenous political structure which reflects where we all are now in the 2020s, before it is too late and the changes are imposed on us. Who appoints the magistrates and judges in Australia, are they elected? No, they are appointed by the ruling forces in Australian society, those individuals who are selected and vetted to tow the line for the ruling elites and who do not upset the apple cart (who maintain an unfair unbalanced taxation system, which sees the enormous wealth of Australia stolen by foreign interests - which includes ever expanding onerous taxes such as tollway fees). The freedom of movement for the vast majority of Australian’s at the bottom of the steep social pyramid is daily being squeezed and further restricted - law courts can only be accessed by those rich enough to pay for cost orders. The system works primarily for the rich and powerful, as was seen when Jack Lang, the NSW Premier, was dismissed by the then NSW governor in 1932 (trying to stand up against the British banks), or when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was dismissed by the then Governor General John Kerr in 1975 (as his fundamental reforms were becoming far too much for the powers that be - for example, giving the Australian people debt free tertiary education and universal health care). If Australia does not rapidly develop and implement an indigenous political structure which reflects the realities of this land and its peoples, then the imported British political model is likely to come crashing down on us all, and an outside force quickly impose a way of life not to our liking. It is vital we do the hard work now and create “Indigenous Australia”. Where all of us from foreign lands (200 years) come together with the diverse range of indigenous clans (60,000 years) to rally around a common Australian ideal and heritage. It is important that next time the World Cup comes around we have the executive arm of our government supporting the "Matildas" and not continue to see, as we just did, an "Australian Monarchy" barracking for a foreign team.

The population is large but, surprisingly, arable land in China is limited, that is why most of the population congregates around the river valleys. And yes India's population in now probably larger than China, but India has its own set of unique challenges, not least being trying to make the largest democratic system in the world function against the backdrop of the caste system and oftentimes fraught relationships between Hindu and Moslem communities. It seems that "water" will be defining issue of this century, especially for both China and India.
