Here are some strategies/tips i would like to share, as Behavior therapist, more specifically Child Behavior Therapist. a teacher and parents can dealt with their special needy child suffering from ASD. 1. Offer Choices and Reinforcement: Give the children choices within the task to empower them and increase their engagement. For example, if they need to complete a worksheet, offer choices like completing it independently or with a peer, using different materials, or working in a different location within the classroom. Reinforce positive behavior with praise, stickers, or other preferred rewards. 2. Use Positive Reinforcement and Encouragement: Provide specific praise and encouragement when children are on task or exhibit appropriate behavior. Positive reinforcement can motivate children to participate and complete tasks. For instance, praise a child who is focused on their work or following instructions, and acknowledge their effort and progress. 3. Break Tasks into Manageable Steps: Break tasks into smaller, achievable steps to prevent overwhelm and promote success. If a task seems too challenging, children may be more likely to refuse or become disengaged. Provide support and guidance as needed, and celebrate each step of progress. 4. Implement Visual Supports and Timers: Use visual supports like visual schedules, timers, or countdowns to help children understand expectations and manage their time. Visual timers can signal transitions between activities or indicate how much time is left to complete a task, which can reduce anxiety and increase motivation. 5. Redirect and Reinforce Positive Behavior: Redirect children who are engaging in disruptive behaviors by providing alternative activities or tasks that align with their interests and abilities. For example, if a child is making noise or clapping hands, redirect their attention to a calming activity like drawing or listening to music with headphones. Reinforce positive behavior by praising children who are following instructions and participating appropriately. 6.Establish Clear Expectations and Consequences: Set clear expectations for behavior and consequences for non-compliance in a calm and consistent manner. Use simple language and visual cues to communicate expectations, and reinforce them consistently. For example, if a child refuses to do a task, calmly remind them of the expectation and the consequence for non-compliance, such as loss of a preferred activity or privilege. 7.Provide Sensory Breaks and Movement Opportunities: Recognize the importance of sensory regulation and movement for children's attention and engagement. Offer sensory breaks or movement activities throughout the day to allow children to release energy and refocus. Provide opportunities for sensory input, such as a sensory bin or movement breaks like stretching or dancing.
