R129 spots to check for water accumulation
Переглядів 1,1 тис.10 місяців тому
Mercedes-Benz R129s aren't known for rust but its still a good idea to check your car for water accumulation after rain or a good car washing session. I've noticed some spots on my 1994 SL500 that consistently gather water and I show you where these spots are and how to make sure these spots on your car are dry.

M119 R129 Mercedes-Benz lower wiring harness example of deterioration
Переглядів 195Рік тому
For a period of time, Mercedes-Benz included wiring harnesses with biodegradable insulation around the wire. The upper harness is the critical one to replace and by now if a car from this period is running, it’s likely already been replaced. But the lower harness is often overlooked. My car was running well but look at the terrible shape of the lower harness! My mechanic was able to do a full r...

The left and right side air vents for heating and air conditioning can become cracked and damaged over the years. In this video I show how to get into this area of the Mercedes-Benz R129. I've tried showing you in reverse in case that helps visualize what's under the speaker cover and upper ledge before you start prying up and unscrewing trim pieces.

Have a '90 300SL ....down much of the same issues...great car
How do I operate the headlight wipers for my 1995 R129
Turn headlights on and operate the windscreen washers.
I purchased my ‘91 500SL AMG for 8 grand in 2022. Got it as the guy who owned it was moving out of the country and had to leave fast with his family to Argentina. BUT I’ve spent (including purchase price) stands at 35 grand. Same Spec as yours but with beige interior and is now supper clean onside and out with 100 thousand miles on it. I have a three ring binder full of documentation of everything that I have e replaced ($$$). I love my R129 and the 6.0 liter engine is a beast - but the beast demands attention to keep it running perfectly. Ive replaced not only mechanical parts but also numerous plastic pieces from all over the vehicle - to also one full set of remanufactured hydraulics (which failed in a year) to the NEW SET that I had MB install that now work perfectly. Recently, the top stopped working (light would only flash red when activated) plus the speedo stopped. What I found out was that the transmission/gearbox wiring harness went bad - as IT operates numerous functions on the vehicle. And not to many owners know this - but that harness has a lot to do with the cluster gauge and the operation of the top. Because if the speedo does not work then the top module(s) can’t determine if the vehicle is stopped or running (its little brain gets confused) so it just will not operate the top as its connected to the speedo operation. That gearbox harness has numerous sensors and connections on it. I looked worldwide (as that’s what we do with needing R129 parts) - and Germany had one for 600+ Euros brand new - OR - I found one in Toronto Canada that was practically brand new for 160 US dollars. I snapped it up immediately and took it to my certified mechanic (away from MB labor costs) and he said it was perfect and clean & he did the entire install in less than 2 hours while I waited in his lounge. The complete job was at a cost of 200 dollars. Then after I took it for a test drive - everything worked perfectly plus it brought back other gauges to life within the cluster. He showed me the old harness and the sensors had become brittle and broken with time plus some mechanic had tried to splice in a sensor - corrupting the coaxed ground wires so it was only a matter of time until it died completely as the sensor that was attempted to be spliced in is a strong magnetic part. The old one had no magnetism left in it at all! That gearbox harness can only be purchased whole but is reasonably easy for a mechanic to install although the transmission will have to be loosened to get the wiring harness in place and clipped in properly. So I understand what ALL you’ve gone thru!😁 Like you - I will never sell mine either - as for me its been an enjoyable journey of learning all about my R129. And a lot of it I can do myself inside my own home garage. So again, thank you for telling us your story so far and as I listened - I would say - yep - done that and that - so I understand fully. Though it still has little things that require my attention that I will address over the winter months as it sits in my garage waiting on spring to arrive. God bless and take care🙏
It is a good idea if shopping for one of these cars to look for a 96+ model year version. You get a 5 speed transmission and electronic fuel injection.
I had a 98 and liked it. But the quality of the interior and the softening of the exterior design I just didn’t like. Much happier with my 94 but still love that combo of the five speed and the m119. Hard to say no to that!
Working on my SL keep me sane - I feel your pain - if you like it you'll spend .. everything you did to yours I did personally to mine even pulled the tranny to have a specialist rebuilt it and put it back in myself. I'm near L.A. I understand, it's a love of a car thing ;) If you need to borrow a STAR system hit me up.
Hey thanks for the offer! Yep I put the money into it because I love it.
@@r129channel Yep - I'm not that far :)
So, you paid 20000 dollars for everything incl your mechanics to get this car into this condition. You could have gotten a 2002 silver arrow for that with 60000 miles in solid refurbished showroom condition couple years ago. And I bet you still have a couple things that either leak or should be fixed soon. Food for thought! How do I know. I own a 1990 300SL-24V at 181000 miles in fully refurbished condition....and I got it for half the price you paid in 2009...and I am a Mercedes specialist, so I can do everything myself.
Guess i could have! In the video i state that the total dollars spent was between myself and the previous owner. I did not spend $20k. All of the major mechanical work to bring the thing back from not being drivable was performed before i purchased.
Buying a 2002 SA is not the same as working on your own. I bet he knows more about this car than he ever could on a nicely sorted SA.
great video thanks for the info
Great video! I can relate. I inherited my father in laws 1992 500sl in Sept. 2020. He bought it in 1993. When I got it, it had 76,000 miles, it now has 92,000 miles. I have $17,500 in my car. The biggest issue I had was the ASR light coming on and then going into limp mode. I had my mechanic look at it and he was confident he could fix it. Well he fixed some things but couldn't fix the ASR issue. I did all my research and even reached to several UA-camrs like, Pete's Carport (huge help!), Victor from Restore your Mercedes and HandyVal (another huge help!). He was very willing to help. I ended up gambling on a electronic throttle acuator from ebay for $350. It actually worked! The ASR light still comes on but no issues and no limp mode. I got reared ended in August of 2022. That took a year to fix. My insurance total it but I kept it. I got enough money to fix it. I went to 13 bodyshops but no one would touch it because it wasn't worth their time and they refused to put any salvage or used parts on it. Pete's Carport had a series of videos on how to fix a w140 that he was rear ended in. It was the same procedure for mine. So i watched them over and over and gave it a shot. I have never done anything like that before but it turned out amazing. Then I found a bodyshop willing to paint it. I love the car! Mainly bc it's been in the family almost it's entire existence but even so it looks amazing! Would I do it again....most likely. I have still have some things to fix like the side bolster in the driver's seat and the seat belt cover on the driver's seat. I'm also doing the injectors and injector vacuum hoses in the next month. Sorry for being so long winded! Thank you for sharing your experience!
So, I have a 92 Most of the things you or your previous owner did I have done. I think you got a good deal. Just had.. 1.5 yrs ago... all the top hydraulics rebuilt...13 total units done and that was 3.2k I bought my car 20 yrs ago for 25K.. I love my car too.. Would I buy it again HELL NO! I have not driven it much in 20 yrs may be 15K miles the car has 56K miles on it. to my way of thinking these cars are kinda sketchy ...ya look at em wrong and something breaks.
Thanks for the comment! The 1992 is definitely more challenging than the 93-95 crop of R129s for sure so i applaud you for giving it a go. Totally understand you on your take with whether you'd buy it again or not. I think the R129 is such a specific fit for the lifestyle and circumstances for a narrow band of people. I happen to be one of them. The biggest factor isn't so much their quality, because they were engineered to the highest degree. But by now, most of the "affordable" R129s were NOT taken care of. I got really lucky that my first mechanic brought this one back to life because the way he found it, it was a junker. My story isn't typical and its not something i'd normally recommend. Happy motoring and thanks for watching!
Part numbers are not the same; depends on the colour.
Thanks for the great vid. Helped me idendify the correct EU specs and surely did help for the installation. The difference to the US specs is day and night.
Great video and great cars! Thank you for sharing!
Blessed Birthday Bruno Sacco. Make sure you make it to 100 years. 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🥂🍾🕺🙏
Greetings from Europe, this is an excellent video even for those changing European bulbs.
2:15 reminded me of the courtroom scene in My Cousin Vinny lol!
🤣
I washed my R129 this weekend. This video helped me get to all those forgotten water puddles. Many thanks.
Well explained. A+
Inspired to do this backwards. Thanks.
Looks like my twin - yep I catch all those spots after a good wash. 😃
The SL320 at 6:28 looks to be a 1997 40th anniversary- guessing by the color 🙂 The SL500 had a 40th anniversary edition too which was a red color. So great seeing all those cars 😍 Thanks for sharing
Hey thanks for the info! Thats really cool to hear.
Benz is the father of the automotive industry......greetings from Jamaica 🇯🇲
I was lucky enough 2 years ago to purchase a 1 owner 1999 SL 500 with 36,000 original miles and now has almost 38,000 on her. I had a 1995 320 a few years ago and totally enjoyed it, but the 500 is definitely more refined. Triple black and absolutely gorgeous she is definitely a keeper! ❤️❤️
Fantastic gathering. I've never had the opportunity to own a Sacco designed Mercedes yet. One day I hope. But when I was a teenager I did receive a letter from him. Or rather from his office, but it was signed by him. Tragically I no longer have it.
There’s always time! Good Sacco-era cars can still be found. Very sad to hear about the loss of the letter you received but the memory is wonderful. Hope you get to own a piece of history very soon!
Thanks for sharing this great event and highlighting Bruno. Great video. Wish I could have been there.
Thanks Val. You’re a huge inspiration for me. My goal is to make sure that coverage of this vehicle is prevalent and accessible on the internet. I see it as a preservation activity. Yes! Wish you could have been there as well. Hope we can meet up and get our cars together some day.
@@r129channel You're very welcome! I'm humbled that you consider me an inspiration for you. I share your goal of ensuring widespread and accessible coverage of the R129 and its similar models. You are so right and a great choice of words...it is a valuable "preservation activity". I appreciate your enthusiasm and look forward to seeing more videos from you in the near future.
Writing from Haiti 🇭🇹 Mr Saco is a Legendary designer I’m proud to be the owner of one W201 and one W126
Greetings The maestro Bruno Sacco legend won’t ever see this quality again ⛽️🚘🇩🇪
Wish I was there! Thanks for a great video
Bruno Sacco for me is the greatest car designer. He changed the face of mercedes-benz and brought the company into the future with his flare of styling. Tunonic German engineering, and Italian style mixed with his obsession to safety. Thank you for sharing your passion for the great modest man. 😊 I am a very proud owner of an r129 myself 😊
My parents brought home a 1987 300E and I was in Kindergarten. The design blew my mind. It was a space ship to me. I could not believe how amazing that car was. Bruno Sacco’s designs were ahead of their time but rooted in the past. Incredible. Thank you for the kind words. I am grateful for people who enjoy the videos I make.
I always wondered if that was a speaker above the pass vent
IT's an even better idea to NOT purchase 2003, 2004, 2005 SL . From 2006 on it's a non issue.
Does anyone actually know why the US headlights have the bezel even though these are from after 1984 when composite lights were allowed?
I always wondered as well...
Doorman has a plug you can use so you don't have to replace that trim.
Referring to the piece under the headlight when doing a wiper delete? That’s a solid idea! I ended up keeping the wipers. They don’t function but look the part for the period so I left them as is.
@@r129channel more content. You have a knack for showing how things are done on these cars 😜
Nicely done - they are meant to be driven.
Thanks appreciate the feedback!
What did you order for the small pieces attached to the vent? I have the same issue, wonder if I need to replace the full-vent grill dash
did your wiring harness not shit the bed lol?
Upper harness was replaced before I got the car. Lower harness is showing signs of being a problem so I’m getting that one rebuilt soon. They don’t sell a new version anymore.
Any more videos coming?
Promo`SM 😔
Coming up on 120k on my ‘94 and 330k on my w140 🤙🏼
Thanks buddy! Great video. I’m going to go this route instead of replacing the cheesy trim reflectors. I found a few for sale on eBay in Germany. Around $600 usd for both headlights and markers. Where did you buy yours from?
Hey there! Glad you found the video useful. The swap is so easy there’s no reason to stick with the US versions of you have the money. I got them from classic euro parts dot com!
Where did you get them
Classic Euro Parts dot com!
8:19 they are glass*. Do not be fooled. I wrecked my first r129 and had just the front driver side headlight broke. Removing it? Yeah I cut my hand and wrists all up. I thought they were plastic too as they do give off a plastic feel. They are however very thick polyglass.
You are an Excellent Teacher! You took time to show each bolt, screw, and clip, as well as their orientation when installed. You included positioning details which are most helpful. Great job!! Thank you again!!!
Hey I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I usually try to watch several videos from different people just to see all the angles. Hoping my video along with others out there helps people with this project.
Can you list the part number for the euro lights without self leveling?
Apologies for the delay in response. Unfortunately I am not aware of the part numbers for these. I acquired the set from classic euro parts and they were super helpful.
I do not have the MB numbers, but since they are useless due to the price i can supply the Magneti Marelli numbers. These would be 710301090122 and 710301090121 of you want white turning signal lights or 710301090111 and 710301090112 if you prefer the oranfe/white turning signals. The headlights are the Same in both sets.
Very good video, thank you.
Great Video! Where did you purchase from? How much better are the new lights at night?
Classic euro parts dot com is where I bought them. The difference at night is VERY noticeable. It went from unsafe to safe just by ditching the US lights for the Euro lights.
Thanks for the reply. The US headlights are a joke. I’m also curious if you have replaced your soft top. Mine is on its last legs and I’m looking for any advice on where to find a replacement.
@@MrFissure13 thankfully I haven’t had to replace the soft top. Story with my car is the previous owners NEVER removed the hard top. I’m the first to have done it. So it is in pristine condition. I’ve seen soft top replacement parts for sale in various places. I would suggest also trying to find someone who has done it before so you can get advice.
Hi..nice vedio, but how did you connect the electricity for the headlights? different plugs!!
The U.S. plug will work and will power the low and high beams. It won’t power the city lights though. You have to do a small wiring to connect the corner running lights to the city lights to make them work.
Super 👍. Please more from r129
Your video is GOLD! I have been restoring a 1999 and watched this before tackling the door. Thanks much!
Glad to hear!
This was extremely helpful, thank you. My passenger side cover broke and fell off while I was driving (don’t ask, it was a weird situation) so now I’m faced with replacing it and this video was super helpful. Thank you thank you. Resources on this specific piece are hard to find so I really appreciate you posting this.
Hey, no problem at all. Glad it was helpful. Hope you can correct the issue with your passenger corner cover.
