Joel's talent is undeniable - and because of this it makes me so sad looking at his work online. Seems to be almost exclusively transcriptions. It's literally waste of time and serves no purpose to do this other than a writing exercise and/or social media clout. He got sold the idea that somehow this is the way to approach drumming and musicianship. Nope. The idea is to study and respect history/masters when you're starting and then MOVE ON AND GO EXPLORE. This can be heard in this solo, it's like he lacks a true creative vision and never really enters into an actual flow state. It's like he's just an engineer thinking math in real time. Unfortunately this is the way the west teaches music. Going through a music college is more a curse than a blessing, and I'm saying this from experience having graduated in 2010. Us white Europeans have so much to learn from afro-American culture in regards to this
