Level crossing does not give much warning of the oncoming train
I was born one day before the upload of this video
Proper buses
The engine in this bus is a Gardner. Crosville converted a large number of their MK1 Nationals using the engines from their batch of withdrawn Seddon RU’s..
They do sound somewhat similar to the DAF units, both quite throaty!
I never understood why they choke the firebox like that. I get that it creates more ash through the funnel, which is preferable by trainspotters due to its picturesque appearance, but isn’t it that forcefully causing the locomotive to run inefficiently could damage it?
i used to drive them when worked in shrewsbury semi autos ace to drive. wish could drive again
Talking a Steam Operated Passenger Train to the Beach and with the locomotive running face first. Awsome.
Love the national, my favourite bus of all. Used to travel on them regularly, as lived in Cheshire in the 1980s, so were all crosville livery. Some were Gardner engine converted, the acceleration difference was marked, you could hear it and see it..! And what a lovely throaty roar to that engine, but still loved the clatter of that original Leyland engine......
Hello just to let you know that I making the heart of wales line on train simulator 2022 Work in progress South Wales coastal +Welsh marches line merge route on steam workshop subscribe for more videos of the development.
i remember this loco from my childhood days when it was based at sutton oak shed st helens and also on the east lancs railway where i work as a volunteer
What year was this?
Gardiner engine?
76079, get off my beloved Great Western, you ungainly little fucker. I don't know where you belong, if anywhere, but it's certainly not here.
I remember when I was 7 years old going on a holiday to Barmouth in the early 70’s. Me and my Grandad walked across the estuary bridge and he talked about the Steam Trains running on the Cambrian line. I never thought I would see this happen at that time.
Great footage. If I correctly recall, Port Talbot East Resignalling blockade meant diverting time-critical steel traffic to/from Margam. Interesting time, route learning for EWS drivers and training them in operation of the CWL's remote token signalling system.
Only trouble with those rural route buses was if you missed it, you had to wait 4 hours for the next one !
Two of these hauled a long train containing what must have been all the 9-11 year old children of Aberystwyth to Chester for the zoo... about 1964/5. Anybody identify which two 76XXX they were?
I remember the mk 1 Nationals had semi automatic gearboxes but the mk 2s they made full automatic
Remember filming this scene well on my sony camcorder (still have the original tape somewhere)
My favourite loco, thanks😃
love the sound of these gardner engines, was always good to hear them about & lovely to ride on one as well
A 510 in a Mark one is the original . Nothing Else will do 😁
Well caught, Mike - Ian 👍👍
Great video great buses
Great video great bus sweet engine
Great footage, I'm as CJB 👍👍-Ian
Looks like a malfunction with the crossing the red light stayed on
The Leyland National is my favourite bus ever & it makes a really great sound
yes especially the gardner engine, lovely throaty bark
@@david197407 that's definitely true
Love the Mk1National with the BMAC tail lights better, makes them look like their Mk2 cousins, but l still love the original units on them
I used drive past Craven Arms every week
THAT SOUND!!!
yep the lovely throaty sound of the gardner engine, when i was at school there was 2 buses in my area had these engines & it was lovely to hear them & to ride on them
Thought this sounded like a Mk2 engine, but nevertheless, mouth watering sound.
Trying to convert the other half from Volvo powered Mk1's to proper powered Mk1's. This is starting to swing it a bit
Really nice looking class 47s shame there not still in use in that livery
The National's rear light clusters were super ahead of their time!
Those aren't original
@@wharris302 Oh?
He's right, they're aftermarket. But you're right also, the original Lucas ones were very modem looking and looked really good.
Spectacular line.. however the way it looks here in 2007 every station looks deserted. Thank goodness the line is used regularly.
Is it me or does the driver of this bus think he is Lewis Hamilton?
I thought that lol.. he's not hanging about is he
Such a shame you don't get characterful buses like this anymore
Good video, but wish it was a 510 engine!
NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Same speed as I remember steam up Talerddig it in the early 1960s. Slow but sure, grinding it out. Thanks.
How many coaches, I wonder? The full 8?
@@Rosie6857 I think it was. It was a difficult route huh? Had to make it to the loops on time or the trains coming the other way would get delayed and then the delays would multiply.
Great video The Leyland National is my favourite bus I went 2 school on the Leyland National back in the 90's great bus great sound
fantastic shot there salopia because I like the way you film the double header engines of the tank engine at the front and the black 5 towed behind it
Great shot! Thanks for uploading this! And I'm always grateful to the late Peter Handford for his recordings on this stretch of line both on and off the footplate!
Great video, Talerddig was amazing, pity they cannot run steam trains anymore on that line.
You made that driver's day. He played the semi-automatic gearbox to make it sound like a manual. I'm not convinced it was a Gardner engine though. Not enough smoke for one. The Leyland unit sounded to me very similar to me?
Love that 2 tone whistle
body built to last not like today's rubbish
One of the best Nasher video's on UA-cam
Thank you for sharing this. I first heard of Llangunllo through Peter Handford's wonderful recordings namely "Trains to Remember" and the original version of "Steam In All Directions" actually seeing Llangunllo Tunnel sheds light especially on the night recording of an 8F in wind and rain on "Steam In All Directions"! What a pity those recordings are no longer on sale in the sshops...
PS sorry for my spelling!
Nice straight-through changes whilst setting off at 1:30. Can't put into words how miffed I am that I never got the chance to drive semi-autos in service.
KevR32 they're quite slow and ate not as forgiving as a regular manual if you do a misstep. Loss of road speed waiting for the revs to die down before the gear change is another draw back. They're alright but a full auto works best.
