Clowning Around with Lifelong Arts at The Ringling
Older adults ran away with the circus in this dynamic workshop series held in Summer 2024. In the workshops, participants learned the basics of printmaking and created their own circus posters. They also learned the foundations of clowning and crafted their own clown persona. Participants learned new skills, but perhaps more importantly, connected with each other and found renewed joy through laughter.

At the heart of that story is circus impresario John Ringling and his wife Mable, and their shared desire to make Sarasota a world-class destination. #TheRingling #AerialView #MuseumofArt #Bayfro...

The response question to the answer of the first question: You've stated that acrobats did have accidents due to the costumes they were wearing. So, whose to say that these acrobats didn't wear heels while walking on the robe just because they are not commonly doing that now? So, by looking at the act and what "most" of these people are wearing now, would it really be a good way to distinguish between publicity and actual stunt performance? That was the first and the best question of the entire Q/A. The speculations are high, we cannot prove much without a video. . .

I experienced Rave Lucid at the Asolo Theater last night, and I was blown away by the unique style and energy of this group. I left wanting to see more of these very talented dancers. And by the applause and and dancing in the lobby, it looked like the rest of the audience agreed.

I'm so very glad I discovered this today. I would have loved to have known her. She is the real deal and more. Her mention of Lou Ann Jacobs made me sit up and smile wide. Lou Ann was the first circus performer I met, in the spring of 1981. She was doing her aerial contortion and loop walk and assisting her man's whip act. I met her outside the Augusta, Maine Civic Center where the annual Shrine Circus was playing. she was between shows, walking her small dog. I asked how to join a circus as a juggler. She suggested Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. I dropped out of music school and joined CBCBC March of 1982, worked with them as a juggler/clown 1982-90. I eventually met Lou Ann's sister Dolly, am friends with her on Facebook now. LaNorma, I am sure, knew brother and sister jugglers Francis and Lottie Brunn, who also worked with RBBB. Francis was a big influence on my juggling styles. I met Lottie once when she visited CBCBC 1989. LaNorma's dedication to trapeze and circus life is really admirable. It would've been wonderful to have seen her perform in a one-ring show in Europe, back in the day. I must read more about her. Thank you for sharing this and allowing me to recall many fond memories. I had a crush or two on some trapeze ladies, back in the day. 😊

I'm super curious about the legwear of the ladies in the 1903 photo. Everything I've read says that tights were not invented until the mid-20th century, but clearly these ladies are wearing some sort of tights. I'm trying to put together an historical costume for a circus performer around this time period (1880-1900) and I can't find anything about the legwear!

I missed the opportunity in buying a book, which featured images of their anatomical join. I use to be afraid of twins like this, but got over it in early 2004. And can't get enough of them, always looking for new and old ones not well known to the public.

Saito Kiyoshi should be a household name. There is such soul in his work. If I had the means to collect art I would rather have his work in my house than probably any Western artists of the 20th century.

Wonderful lecture. I am the daughter of a dancer in the A.G. Barnes circus in 1928. She didn't talk much about her experience, but she did tell me a few stories. One of them was that the performers were given responsibility for making sure the animals were properly cared for. My mother was given responsibility for an elephant named Babe. Babe had been captured wild. She was a teen aged elephant and mom made sure she was properly fed and watered and groomed. She didn't do it, but made sure it got done. She and Babe bonded, but after the Barnes circus went bankrupt in 1929, she never found out what happened to Babe. I only have 2 pictures of my mom at the time & one of them is a photo with Babe. I'd love to know more. Right now there is a campaign to free 2 old and arthritic elephants from a circus and send them to a refuge. They are having to give rides to tourists. They are both in pain and clearly mistreated.

Loved the information and wanted to share this info with whomever has interest: Lavinia is a direct descendant of Eduard Bompasse. He landed in Plymouth MA on the second ship to land in the New World. The ship was the Fortune in 1621. The name Bompasse is french and Eduard was a pilgrim seeking religious freedom. All but a few of the people in the USA with the last name of either Bompasse, Bumpas, Bumpus, Bumper or Bump (Lavinia's father) living today are rooted in Eduard's family.Point being Lavinia didn't have to be a Countess....she was American Royalty already.
