When you're only 4ft 9 I could see how this may be a problem
It's amazing how fast something like that can happen, and if you are only less than four feet down it's crazy to think it can kill you so easily. I'm NO expert but I can only imagine, so this stuns me. I'm glad this young man recovered.
Thanks for the video Very good 👌
Maybe if the rookie operator knew how to dig trenches
"Sittin' in the hole takin' a break..."
I occasionally dig old privy’s looking for bottles with a group of guys and one of the older guys who has been doing it for a long time told a story about one collapsing and killing a guy they knew.
I remember back in college I went home with this very large girl after the bar one night. One thing led to another in the bedroom and the next thing I know I have completely lost my sense of orientation and start panicking trying to grasp for air. I tried to cry for help but nothing would come out. I thought this was how I was going to die. I finally broke free from the thunder thigh prison and counted my lucky stars to have survived such a harrowing experience. I married her a year later and now we have 5 kids. Love you, honey!
It locates a different kind of nugget...
Old snake
Just quit on site when a tryant foreman or contractor asks you to do something life threatening. Its not worth it to look macho and tough around the guys. My friend told me had to run a jack hammer in a trench and acted like it he was forced to risk his life-Well you are not forced to do anything. Say NO, f@ck you and leave.
We need to outlaw baby wipes. Like seriously.
Thanks
Very knowledgeable!
INTERESTING
That's a museum quality sewer machine you have there🙂
if you herd some the old timers storie ive herd in central florida hers a good one asuper entendent from orlando told me he had a cavin on him he stuck his face in the end of the 8"sewer pipe so he could breaththey dug him up with scovels worst one the owner jumped on backhoe started digin the men out first was a arm then a head no names i work for thos same boy snce mid 70s
my bigest my sons iam not around to keep them safe
There is nothing safe about that ditch thats no class c soil should have been a hefty fine for that nonsense
Look at the way your operator slope that trench that's the ugliest thing I've ever saw you have no business in that Trench need more operators with more experience
Laying sewer pipe and down in the trenches, just started last week 22 bucks an hour no experience, when I'm down there shit is sketchy , if a cave in did happen getting us out would be slow going
lets make this go viral
1 cubic ft of dirt can be 74 to 110lbs. So when you put it into perspective, 1 cubic yard of top soil can weigh right around 850 to 1000lbs. So 4 cubic yards of top soil falling on you can mess you up pretty quick.
Your math might be a little off. Even if you go by your lowest cubic foot a yard is 27x that, over 2000 pounds/yard
@@seaturkey5608 lol what? Are kidding me? Dry topsoil dont come near that much. Fill dirt would cause its got more sediment, but a cubic yard of top soil aint no where near 2000lbs. Ive loaded way to many trucks for to many years to know thats not true.
Thank you i actually been trying to figure out that number for months without using a weight. I can now do my minecraft calculations correctlyer
sea turkey was using YOUR OWN NUMBERS. Even on the low side of YOUR numbers, 74# x 27 = 1998#
@@mackbarker1990 then you tell my scales there wrong.
That's not 3 foot 9 inches. I've never seen a tape or measuring stick like that? Yet, a quick scroll through the comments reveals that it is an engineer's measuring device. At least where I come from a foot is 12 inches not 10. 😳😁
I use both types of sticks in excavation the one is still feet but the feet are in 10 ths of a foot I use that stick when prints are in 10ths of a foot which is almost always on engineered prints. When i working on my own i tend to use a normal stick like a tape measure.
Ok, this point has been alluded to, but I'll explain it anyway. I heard them say the clump of soil rolled off the top of the trench, not the side wall caved in. So the main issue here is the bund of spoil was being cast way too close to the edge of the trench wall. Depending on the soil type, depends on the safe angle of repose. To be safe the edge of the spoil bund should be a min distance away from the edge of the trench wall. Having soil piled up on the edge of the trench wall is bad. 1. You are putting undue weight on the edge of the trench wall, increasing chance of wall cave in. 2. The closer the spoil is to the trench wall the more likely the spoil will fall back into the trench - as is what happened in the video description. One last note. The picture of the site was telling. The site was a mess, it should have been open level ground with a trench and a bund of spoil along one side of the trench, but it looked like a shit show.
Poorly dug also didn't consider soil consistency seeing large chunks mixed with sand makes ground very unstable should have sloped
Had a live 15" force main let go while I was working in a 22' deep trench with double stackedtrench boxes. It doesn't matter how fast you think you are you can't outrun that much liquid. Almost drowned in human excrement that day
An trench that is over 20 feet deep is required (OSHA REGS) to have the shoring designed by a registered professional engineer.
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR SON.
Looks More like 4’ 2”
The trench is actually 3' 9/10ths as you can plainly see that's an engineers scale.
Good eye. I was thinking that also. I wouldn't have known what that was, if i didn't see your comment. Thanks man.
3'9" + the height of the spoil pile if it is closer than 2' from the lip of the trench. Per OSHA.
i have run a gradall excavator for 15 years and i have no problem yelling at guys (and i am usually a very quiet person) for all different kinds of saftey situations
Your doing good watching out for the green ones. I have been there and you probably have too! Thank you from Kentucky.
Deeper than wide, shore it up boys and gals.

I work for a small road maintenance department. This video will be used in one of our safety meetings in the near future.
Very nice.
The first thing in our trench rescue class was the instructor saying that trench rescues are really rare. it's almost always a recovery.
When going through osha trench safety class we did it at the fire department that had the trench and rescue team and they said the same. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 to 95% is nothing more than body recovery.
It wasn't the trench wall that caved on him. It was excavated soil placed on the top of the trench edge. So, in effect, it was deeper than 3'-9". Is my understanding incorrect? I'm glad your okay, young man. That had to be terrifying.
@ ralph sampson While you’re correct, their ditch is crap. You cannot have your spoils right on the ditch, try for 2’ or more away from the ditch, I do think it was the bank as they stated that caved in. It was real bad dirt, and his dad described it as a chunk the size of a backhoe bucket(front). Their hoe is a small one, he couldn’t get a chunk that big in his bucket to roll back in on him. Definitely the bank caved in, not laid back, spoils on top of ditch, and it was late Friday, been there. I guarantee they were saying screw it, let’s hurry up and gtfo here. They just got lucky. They should go through some trench classes, at least read fatal grams from OSHA/MSHA, they’ll sadly open your eyes to some screwed up fatalities.
If you pile dirt on the side of the trench, you add the height of the dirt pile to the height of the trench to get the actual depth.
Not sure if its our state OSHA or national OSHA, but i think the spoil pile is required to be at least 2 feet from the edge of the excavation
Correct. Local OSHA standard is 2 Feet trench to START of spoil pile.As the clod rolls the kid had to absorb the momentum too. Think of a deeper trench with a 12" rock rolling down into you , the head, the knee shoulder or whatever..
I was in a trench about 6 feet deep with no box. Grade C soil. I was in my knees cutting pipe. Noone was spitting not sure why. Out of nowhere about half a full bucket full of mud and clay fell on me I was face first in that whole with water.. I'll tell you what I know the feeling he's talking about when he said he thought he was gonna die. I'll never forget that feeling it was the worst I've ever felt. Somehow I was just to lucky. Tailman pulled me right out and I walked away with nothing but a slightly sore shoulder... It's not worth it guys.... If there is not a box or it's not sloped to perfection just don't get in the hole.
hey sean glad u made it out of this wreck my understanding is if dirt falls on u about waist high it cuts off your breathing imeadetly i onch was around a cave in incedent
@ Sean Sharp You got lucky. Crap like that you definitely need a spotter. And shoring. Worst case you lay it back. Hopefully with more experience you’ll keep yourself outta them situations, and make sure the top man or tail man is watching your back. 👍🏻
That grade rod was in tenths not inches... Smh
@ Gavin Stout Not sure if you’re saying so they were off a couple inches in their story, or the fact they were using a tenths grade pole. It’s all we use. Even our tape measures.
