The best snare ever made! Rogers "Big R" Dynasonic COB 14x5 Vintage Snare played by Aaron Wittman
Переглядів 31 тис.4 роки тому
Skip to 4:20 for playing. One of the most underrated snares but still known by pros for years to be a killer snare for a very reasonable price. This is a 1979 Big R model made in USA with all original parts except the bridge system which is a re-make. Super sensitive but with a bite and can handle all tuning ranges.

This is a fantastic snare that I am very proud to own. 3-ply Mahogany-Poplar-Mahogany with Maple re-rings. Great addition to any collection as it works in close to all settings. No splitting at the seam or re-rings at all. This was the best snare that WFL offered in their catalog in 1957 in the most expensive wrap, the coveted White Marine Pearl. This snare has the red date stamp along with an ...

Having fun in the studio. Music makes the pandemic feel like it's not even happening, I'm just grateful I have an outlet that allows me to grow and be able to create.

I just got one . Mint condition & it’s US . I was a tad concerned about the snare assembly being tricky but it’s set up great & sounds great .
I might have one like this but I'm not sure. Nice attack but also quite some reverb. Probably didn't asjust it well... How to make sure?
Can you play heavy metal on that?
I use a late 60s COB Powertone 14 x 5 as my main guy. The Dynasonic apparatus always intimidated me, and seems like a solution in search of a problem.
HEY, bro , great vid! Totally agree that Dynasonic is THE BEST SNARE DRUM of all time. Check out my restored 1967 Holiday extended kit ua-cam.com/video/2uiOcYzfRkA/v-deo.htmlsi=5qctM-5miwHCndnA I prefer the wood shell Dyna sound! Keep up the good work, bro!
Def not the best ever made
Killer snare
Saludos gran video en cuanto vendes el puente para trampa Rogers y aro inferior tengo tarola y ala que se ve en video
I have a Rogers R-380/Dynasonic Hybrid Vintage 14"x5" Snare Drum If anyone has any info or value i i appreciate it thanks
Your snare side head is probably transparent, so look at the label. If it says cleveland it is 60s, fullerton is 67-71 or so, and so on., But get the 5 digit serial number & google it & your model and you'll likely find something to help date it etc.
I had that drum and wish I never got rid of it... will sub. Hope you check out some of my stuff as well.
A great drum
I’m 72 and bought my Rogers Holiday kit when I was 16 (1966). I have 3 Yamaha kits (beech and birch) but this OldVeteran still runs with Rogers. “Old Wood” brings unbeatable provenance and TONE. That Dyno snare is VERY loud. So I typically use an old Ludwig AcroSonic. You can never have TOO many snares. Big stages get THE DYNO. My wife asked me if I would ever “hang up” gigging? “I’ll let you know someday”!! 🙄🥁🎹 I’m the Organist at church too. Music brings joy to everyone so Why stop Now?? I’m still subbing in several bands and have a trio ramping up as well. Blessings to all!! Rogers Alumni USAF VET
I agree with you 100 per cent! I’m 70 and have been playing professionally since around 1977. Retire? To what?? I have three Rogers kits .Yes you can never have enough snares! When my wife says why do you have so many snares I say….you like shoes don’t you?😀
@@philipnestor5034 dear fellow, drummer, Philip! I just can’t stop giggling about can’t have too many snares. You got shoes shoes!!! All my Best musical and Healthy wishes to you and yours !
Uhh that was my first good snare I bought! $150 brand new! A fortune in 1966! It is a beast!!! Heavy but great! I later bought a 14 by 6.5 but wood!! Became my favorite! I think metal snares are too bright! But aluminum sounds great! I also had a swervomatic foot pedal!! I played that for close to fourth years! Fast! I could easily get triples out of it! Some one stole it!!! But left a pearl chain drive in it,s place!! Not quite an asshole but surely a dick!
I have a 66 powertone COB it's a killer instrument. One of my favorite in my collection.
Great drum. I have a script badge COB Dynasonic and a Big R (USA) SuperTen. Isn't the throwoff called 'clockface' rather than 'tombstone'?
It’s been called both. The “official” name is “Clock-face” but collectors also say “Tombstone”, both work. ;)
I thought the rounder clockface throwoffs were 60s through early 70s Fullerton label era. Then they squared up just a bit to become called tombstones. Just my impression, I don't have pics to confirm it or not.
My first drum set was a Rogers 5 piece. Got it used with the butcher block wrap and that 5x14 cob dynasonic big R. I actually didn't like the kit itself... The hardware was difficult to manage (I was a beginning player) and I sold it eventually including the dynasonic. Looking back I wish I'd kept the snare but many years later I bought the dynasonic reissue and I love it.
I have one in the Script Logo (probably around 1970). I must admit it is hardly my favorite snare drum. It's a shame because I wanted one for years and when I finally got it, I was disappointed. It is a huge pain in the ass to tune and "dial in" the right sound. However, it is a very well-made snare, and I can see why many like it.
The best ever made? Meh. Thats subjective. There are some serious contenders for that spot. Especially the Ludwig Black Beauty, Ludwig Supraphonic and the Slingerland Radio King
Yes, you’re absolutely right..😊👍🏿
ACROLITE IS THE BEST SNARE EVER MADE. PERIOD
I want one, but I can't justify buying it as I have a Pearl Jupiter (like Stuart Copland) which is 14x5 brass
That’s a great snare as well! I made a video of that one also. Very crunchy but still fat sounding.
@@SuperDrdirty It's not the best on low tuning, but medium and tight, it's great
Ithink it would sound better with the reso head tuned higher personally
To each their own. ;)
Just picked one up at an estate sale in NJ. Got a Big R 5 piece kit including this snare for $350.00. I absolutely LOVE this snare. It's got that certain tone you can't get from snare drums today, really has that vintage sound and sensitive as f%$k! Love it, thanks for the video!
I have one with just Roger but the bridge said made in the usa. Serial #42073 custom built. Is my bridge on to tight becuz it's making ahole on the bottom head.
If it’s making a hole then that’s no good. It’s designed to basically just “kiss” the bottom head. There are videos of how to set it up, once it’s dialed in you’re in business. Hope this helped you!
Without a doubt, my favorite snare!
Is one of the Best But not the best
I have this snare, came with my white Big R XP-8 power shell kit i bought new in 1979. They always talk so highly of the older Dynasonic and it commands big $$. Not sure why this gets short changed but I always thought it sounded great and your video confirms it.
I’ve got one the same, first good piece of drum gear I got. Mine has some mods (new throw, lost int muffler and snare wire brace thing gone, die-cast top hoop ) it’s been around the world with me and has been a trusty companion. Sadly I let it down by dropping it at an airport in a sleep deprived and drunken stupor and it doesn’t quite sound as great anymore. Though it still kicks. Beautiful drum.
Nice sound and great tunning! What mics are you using?
It's a Zoom Qn2-4K,with the natural reverb from the room.
Super. The open sound !!!! Amazing
great drumming
Thank you kindly. Very much appreciate it!
I agree the best ever. I have a Big R also. If you have great drags. There is no drum that can compete.
I'm not digging the "Big R" line of Rogers drums. Why? Aesthetics------ I hate the big 'R'..... looks like crap. Also----- I much prefer the aluminum snare drums. Ie. Ludwig Supraphonic and Acrolite. My faves. One more thing------ You are *over-selling* the Rogers Dynasonic snare drum. Be practical and play the drum in two modes... snares off.. snares on. It sells itself. Nobody gives a SHIT about anything else. Great video, btw.
Well, everyone has their favorite and their go-to snare. This happens to be mine. I own a supra and an acrolite, they are of course not the same as this one. The most obvious would be that this is a brass shell and the supra and acrolite are aluminum with a bead on both and I know there are brass supras out there. Those are at a higher price point and these are more affordable but still have great build quality. In regards to "over-selling" this snare, I rather really enjoy the fact that it sounds really good and has worked very well for the music I've used it on and has made me a decent living as a drummer. I just felt like making a review since I like it... \_(ツ)_/
@@SuperDrdirty nice drum!!!! Is it tuned to C300Hz?
@@uprightdoublebass thank you. I tune by ear so I’m afraid I can’t verify the Hz. They have a great range so it could go up a lot higher than this.
Well, I’ve played on mine since 1966. Professionally in jazz, rock, Nigerian hi life, big bands. I definitely give a S**t as to how it sounds and performs. Obviously you haven’t played enough to appreciate the best snare ever. Be careful making statements that speaks for everyone. Not cool, and shows you inexperience. (In response to Missy)
The bridge was a gimmick. Many ways to achieve the same result.
I didn’t build it. It’s just a review.
Please educate us as to how many ways and how it's a gimmick.
@@cpf383 Disagree. The whole system works perfectly as designed. Lots of people just have no clue what it does and can't get what they want because they don't understand the system. I've seen even rather well-known drummer youtubers completely miss the mark on the Dynasonic system, saying it does things it doesn't and completely misunderstanding how to operate it. Sad, really. I first got a wood dyna and immediately fell in love with it, so I got a COB as well. Fantastic drums.
Excelente comentario y magnífico tambor redoblante. Nada mejor que un Rogers Dynasonic. El mejor del mundo en las baterías.
Sounds great! I just ordered the same drum - WFL '57 5.5x14 6-lug but in the Natural Mahogany finish. I've got a '59 Transition Badge Pioneer 5.5x14 and I love it. Had to get another :)
Rogers insuperable...vuelvan por favor a fabricarlo...es la mejor batería...sin duda...
It is being produced now under new ownership.
We have an old one in the percussion room where I teach. It has the small oval badge and I have fixed it up with Puresound DS snares and good heads. It’s mostly used on a concert stand for technique and orchestral stuff where it really shines. When I was a kid they had a one like that in the front window at the music store in my hometown, across the top of a square case. I dreamed about that drum. Came across a similar metal drum named King Beat by Star (Tama later). It had a similar snare system and sounded great. Not brass as I recall but very good. Later on I had a Ludwig Super Sensitive, also with parallell snare system. Very nice. But the Dyna Sonic is outstanding.
