The Images of Yasujirō Ozu
In the early thirties the camera slides back and forth, like bread soaking up oil. By the time he made his first sound film, it is still. It stayed like that for the next thirty years, until he died at the age of sixty. "Late Spring", "Late Autumn", "Early Summer"- many of the titles sound the same. They represent a single view of life, and how it is shaped by the modern world. He achieved a kind of serene mastery you can only find in Vermeer, or Chūko poetry.

I have merely tried to condense his work, by montage, into a sort of 'essence'.

Late Spring, 1949

The Images of Charlie Chaplin
Переглядів 49Рік тому
Charlie Chaplin was one of the most famous actors in history. He wrote, directed, and composed the music for each and every one of his feature-length films. In 1940, he made a famous departure from playing his Tramp character, to star alongside himself as the nefarious dictator Adenoid Hynkel. In 1952 he was driven from America, and settled in Switzerland, near the banks of Lake Geneva. - "Char...
The Images of Stanley Kubrick

In 1977, Hollywood captivated the world with "Star Wars". The spaceships, however, had an eerie similarity to "2001: A Space Odyssey". So did the photography of Gilbert Taylor and the voice of James Earl Jones; both borrowed from "Dr. Strangelove". One example of his cultural impact. Despite the seeming inconsistency of his films, all of them are connected by his perfectionism, a certain cynica...
The Images of Andrei Tarkovsky

"Tarkovsky for me is the greatest, the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream." So said Ingmar Bergman. Throughout his small oeuvre, Tarkovsky made films of the utmost calibre and poetic beauty, in the great tradition of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. - I have merely tried to condense his work, by montage, into a sort of "essence"....
The Images of Federico Fellini

Known for his stylish dreamlike imagery, he stands, along with Picasso, as one of the great artists of the 20th century. It all started with the garish 1925 "Maciste in Hell" (the first film he ever remembered seeing), onto Charlie Chaplin, onto his short career as a caricaturist after the toppling of Benito Mussolini. I mention these as far as any artist can really be explained by his influenc...
The Images of Orson Welles

Regularly considered one of the greatest directors in of all time, Welles struggled to secure a commercial career, often having to work for free, or fund production out of his own pocket. Citizen Kane is his most celebrated work by far, even though many of his other films exhibit a similar mastery. - I have merely tried to condense his work, by montage, into a sort of "essence". The Images of Carol Reed

Carol Reed has long been overlooked, for his light touch and generally "anti-auteur" approach. He believed that a truly great film should always be accessible to the general public, and not only to intellectuals. Some have gone as far as to propose (the conspiracy theory) that his masterpiece "The Third Man" was actually the work of Orson Welles; a man who only ever spoke of Reed glowingly. - I...

Fellini is my favorite director. The maestro! His surrealistic and abstract style is genuine art! I truly love his art, his filmography, and I think you've done a great job of capturing the essential for a summary of his catalog. Of course it's quite impossible to capture the atmosphere of his imaginative and expressive movies, but this is as good as it gets! Really fine work, keep up this great work!

The Man Between is definitely underrated. It's honestly right up there in terms of quality with the trilogy of films (The Fallen Idol, Odd Man Out and The Third Man) that most recognize as great. I also think that Our Man in Havana is such a great film.
