    Nice and very instructive video, but there is a confusion about how was made the "gated reverb" effect heard on Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight". This particular effect was the combination of the natural reverberation of the London Townhouse's studio 2 stone-laden room and the SSL 4000 B Console's heavily compressed talkback mic input (noise-gated afterwards). It was first discovered in 1979, by Hugh Padgham, when he accidentally left open the talkback mic as Phil Collins fiddle around behind his drums during a recording session for Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" song. Because the talkback mic signal was unable to be directly recorded on the SSL console, Padgham rewired the board in order to record his intriguing discovery. The exact same procedure was then used a year later to record the drums for "In The Air Tonight", but this time with the addition of a noise-gate. The AMS RMX16 "Non Lin 2" preset is only a (fairly good) reproduction, but not a 100% copycat, of this particular effect, which remains impossible to reproduce without that special room, its specific treatment... and the SSL's talkback mic input.

    I think you might need to automate that de-esser, as the level of ess in the vocal was quite variable. If you crush all the esses, you end up with "mithing" rather than "missing".

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh Місяць тому

      I hear you, and if that de esser was on the actual vocal I'd agree. When processing just the reverb returns you can be much more heavy handed with things like this - the actual s is completely unaffected in the dry signal so you don't have to worry about your vocal sounding lispy like that

    If ever I use the plugin at all, whatever value I'm okay with for the mid knob I can tolerate a maximum of half that amount on the high knob, if even used at all. I literally HATE the high knob (so seeing you consistently turn that one up first is absolutely doing me in as I'm watching!) as to my ears not a lot of _musicality_ lives up there… but every now and again 'it works'. I need to _feel it_ rather than hear/detect it, though.

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh Місяць тому

      Haha yep I hear you. I also find the mid band a lot more bearable. For this video I was mostly trying to demonstrate the issues you can get with Fresh Air so was using the high band (well the whole plugin tbh) a lot more than I would normally. Like you, it's rare that I use Fresh Air, and even rarer that I turn the high band up at all!

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 2 місяці тому

      Hey David! Yeah I totally agree - Serum is particularly bad when you use the unison, it really pans the oscillators out which isn't great for the low end. In this patch the second oscillator is unaffected by the LFO and isn't using any unison so it stays central which helps the low end stay solid. I actually have another video where I go into a bit of detail about how you can (and can't) have wide bass without encountering phase issues ua-cam.com/video/NWFoHKIGNZs/v-deo.html

    A good mix comes down to 90% experience and know-how, and about 10% the specific plugins a person uses. Well...add to that good, well recorded singers and musicians. Because honestly, that's the most important part lol. My voice mixed well on record still sounds worse than someone with a great voice but badly mixed 😅

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 2 місяці тому

      Totally agree! It's become a bit of a cliche but I really could do 90% of what I do with stock plugins. There are a couple I couldn't do without, and a couple more that I really love because of the workflow but tbh it's mostly about developing your ear and learning to hear what a mix needs

  • @stumbla
    @stumbla 2 місяці тому

    The reason why the EQs sound different is bcs the Q-3 labels 0.7 as 1 whereas the TDR doesn't. I prefer the system of the Q-3, but it is a wider band by about 1/3 relative to the TDR Nova. This is my understanding, anyway; I may be wrong or not have explained this well. Also, The TDR Slick EQ is an eq that does a colourful sound. It's a great Maag alternative. It's air band goes up to 40k like the maag.

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 2 місяці тому

      Yeah that sounds about right to me. I think I could definitely use Nova as my main EQ if needed, I'd get used to the behaviour pretty quickly but for me the thing that makes Pro-Q3 so indispensible is the workflow - it's so quick and intuitive I never have to stop and think about what I'm doing. Will have to check out Slick EQ - sounds great!

    its been my experience that are some categories of free plugins that give you the same results as the paid. like EQ, limiters, clippers, stereo enhancers,and even a few compressors. however, where there are no comparisons are the paid plugins like saturation, most compressors, reverb and delay, pitch shifting and autotune.

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 2 місяці тому

      Yep I'd say that's a pretty good summary. Reverb in particular is an area where I've yet to find many free plugins that really do it for me. There are usually some good stock reverbs in most DAWs though which is great

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 2 місяці тому

      Thanks, glad you like it! There are a few different ways you can deal with that. In this case by chopping out quite a few bits of the main hat loop it didn't really clash with the shaker loop any more, but if I'd wanted to keep both of them running through the whole track it would have been an issue. The easiest solution is just to pick loops that fit well together, or program in patterns yourself using samples rather than loops, but if you find a couple of loops that you really like but don't quite fit timing wise you can use audio quantisation to line them up. It can be a little bit fiddly but it usually works, unless they are way out in which case you can start hearing time stretch artifacts but usually it's fine

    There is a bit of an issue with this process. The browser plugin has volume controls, and then you are normalizing. Unless both are using the same exact algorithm and the same values, you are not going to get perfect results. (not overly sure you would even then) You have essentially run the audio through two digital gains.

    • @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh
      @MoonshiftAudio-ft7oh 3 місяці тому

      I hear where you're coming from but the differences in the gain process will be minute, and I would argue almost imperceptible to the human ear. Definitely would not explain the differences we hear in these null tests. The information in the highs that you hear in the result is absolutely typical of what I'd expect to hear from compression artifacts. I agree that the test isn't perfect, but I'm happy that it still proves beyond doubt that there's compression on playback from these platforms

      The issue is only if you play the files back from in the Dropbox app or in a browser. If you send someone a link to a file on one of these platforms and they download it to their computer/mobile device then it will be full size, full quality and you won't have any issues

    Their web frontend would be using something like ffmpeg to transcode it for stream previews in the browser. It does not make sense to push the entire wave file through as a stream. The actual issue is if the cloud storage provider is compressing the uploaded files and then when downloaded if there is any loss then you should not use those services for audio production where any quality loss is not allowed. Same goes for graphics files and any kind of graphic design works.

      Yep! I understand why it wouldn't make sense for them to stream the files at full quality, really this is just a PSA to always download files if your want to listen critically, rather than playing them in your browser. Also felt like a good use case for a null test, and to demonstrate how those work

      I've never used that platform, but I would guess that they also compress audio and video when streaming it, so my advice would be the same - you're almost certainly better off downloading the files and playing them offline in a media player or in your DAW
