Turn Your MINI PC Into A NAS - Terramaster D4-320 USB 3.2 DAS Review
Yes, you can have a mini pc and hard drive storage at the same time with the Terramaster D4-320 USB DAS enclosure. But should you? Probably yes, because it's genuinely really good.
It avoids all of the major pitfalls with USB HDDs by using individual SATA controllers and an internal USB hub. It supports four drives and up to 10 gigabit transfer speeds, making it a good choice for adding storage to a mini pc server in your homelab.

We're installing a Noctua NH-L9i in this HP Elitedesk 800 G3 SFF computer to see if it is an improvement over the terrible stock cooler. This install requires modifying the case, but is very easy to do and offers a cheap upgrade for these already cheap computers. The processor is a 65 watt TDP i5 6500, which the Noctua NH-L9i is perfect for, but will the lack of airflow through the case be a pr...

I turned an e-waste PC into a capable home server with a few cheap upgrades. I replaced the i3-540 with a Xeon X3470, installed more memory, an SSD and an Nvidia Quadro K4200 GPU. For the software, I installed Proxmox and virtualised a Minecraft server and Jellyfin. I tried to get hardware acceleration working in Jellyfin, but it didn't quite go to plan.

I found this computer in a trash pile on the footpath. It was previously used in a tool truck, similar to a Snap On truck. It has oil and grease on the side panel and a lot of dust inside. Does it work? What CPU is in it? Let's find out!

    I was curious what SATA chip(s) the D4-320 used on the back-plane and I was really pleased to find this video that went over this. I noticed the T6-423 NAS I inherited had a ASM1166 for its back-plane and was considering whether it could be connected directly to the PCIE of a different motherboard. If that works, was considering buying the D6-320 (assuming the same backplane) and replacing the USB "mother board" with a PCIEx4 extension cable to remove USB from the equation. I was also curious about the cheaper D4-320, but thanks to this video, I can see it has a completely different set-up with USB running directly over the PCIEx4 connector. I also now wonder if my assumption that the D4-320 would have the same backplane as the T6-423 is wrong, and if its backplane is closer to this one. Regardless, thank for this very informative video.

    I recently bought an ORICO 2-disk bay to hook it on a RPI5 OMV7 and faced a nasty issue. Both drives show with same serial number and it's hard to run S.M.A.R.T on both. There are two drives recognized, but the smartctl doesn't work well. After I execute smartctl on dev/sda, I then need to execute it twice on dev/sdb, because the first execution will still display the drive in dev/sda. It's quite annoying because I constantly get error notifications. In windows, when I try to check the S.M.A.R.T with aida64, only one disk shows there. I guess that's because of the poor implementation of SATA to USB interface.

    Just to add a data point - I use the D6 model with a few of my servers to add 6 SSD's with ceph. The access patterns with ceph are very different from ZFS, but I have found it to be quite reliable, with no real bandwidth issues over my 10 GbE network. Ceph isn't likely to be accessing all the drives at the same time on any one machine unless your IO Ops are quite high.

    USB4/Thunderbolt (20/40/80 Mb/s) connections between the host and DAS will eliminate some of the bandwidth concerns, but the technology still seems to be in some flux. I would guess USB4/TB cable and connector quality will be a fairly big deal. Another simpler cheaper technology that's here now (at least on the host side) is oculink. A number of mini PC manufacturers like Minisforum already include oculink ports, and you can readily add one with a spare M.2 NVMe slot. Inexpensive eGPU docks with oculink support are common now, but I haven't found any DAS storage boxes with one yet. Has anyone else seen one?

    Comparatively the D8 Hybrid has four M.2 slots in addition to four 3.5" drive slots. It present those M.2 NVMe drives poorly though, ZFS did not like. I had picked it up for relatively cheap so it wasn't too big of a disappointment. I expected as much though honestly. Would love a more technical explanation as to how and why.

    • @serverscience
      @serverscience 12 днів тому

      That one is a bit odd, I would've expected it to use thunderbolt so the NVMe drives could connect directly over PCIe, but I guess not. I don't know much about it, so I unfortunately don't know what could cause the issues you had with it.

    The QNAP TR-004 has RAID and is likely a decent option for such a setup depending on your planned approach of such a setup. I have the TerraMaster D8 Hybrid (same case as shown here) with 4 SATA bays and 4 NVMe ports. I’d have to disassemble it to get a better idea of its USB 3.2 Gen 2 configuration. However, the D8 Hybrid only supports RAID 0 and 1 on SATA bays 1 and 2. I’m not sure I would want to use it as a makeshift NAS though. The D8 hybrid is a bit of an odd bird IMO.

    Oh, finally. Someone explains what's wrong with USB storage. Thank you. I've only ever encountered homelabers stating the obvious generic statements like "the USB cable can get loose" or "RAID is too complex for USB", which all goes without saying. I'll be careful with my 5-bay Yottamaster I've been using for my Raspberry Pi 4 with OMV. No worries, it mostly holds old SMR drives that I'm using as a 3rd copy of my files.

    So I can confirm that the NH-L9x65 is a direct fit with no modifications to the case or cooler itself. The included AMD screws fit perfectly into the case cooler mounts, so I used those to attach the top bracket for the cooler. You'll need to cut threads into the Intel bracket, but it's easy since the metal is soft - just twist the screws back and forth a bit and they'll go in. I haven't touched the bios fan settings, but im already seeing at least a 15°C difference than before. Fan ramps up as it should, so I don't think I'll need to change that for now. I also added a small 60mm fan to the back help pull heat out of the case and attached that to the cpu connection with a y-adapter.

    • @Sunaori
      @Sunaori 7 днів тому

      I just did exactly that to my EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF. At first it was pretty hard using the AMD screws to cut the threads into the correct hole on the Intel 1151 mount brackets and thought I fell victim to an internet troll. But after going back and forth while using enough force it finally started going in and I was done threading them in after about 10 minutes. The black intel standoffs (for socket 1151) still seemed to be the right ones so I went with those. Worked like a charm. I didn't have to modify anything on the case itself either. The 60mm Noctua on the back with the Y-Adapter worked as well. I used some cable ties to fix it against the back, pulling air out. Since I didn't get any accessories with the PC I went ahead and also 3D-printed some 3,5" disk mounting "screws". Now I got everything I wanted. Thanks a lot for your info!

  • @TheCrimsonFlash
    @TheCrimsonFlash Місяць тому

    I took a shot at this mod on my EliteDesk 800 G6. For anyone who is trying this, it will NOT work on the G6 board. The caps have been rearranged and the four to the left of the CPU are in line with the bracket, and the two at the front are closer to the bracket. This doesn't allow you to attach the cooler since it is physically touching the capacitors and you cannot make a flush fit to the top of the CPU. Good thing I dry-fit it before I hammered down those posts! I wonder if the NH-L9x65 would fit better on the G6 board. The original cooler+fan is about 65mm from my measurements, so it should still fit vertically. Would just need to figure out how to manage the backplate against the case.

    • @serverscience

    I believe that model of ATX socketable cpu and universal motherboard is unsustainable. You simply don't need massive VRM systems that new b650/70, x870 boards have if what you put inside it is miniature 8 core ryzen cpu. Single board computer powered by ATX power supply and PCIE expansion slot is the future. The AliExpress board repurposing laptop soc and chip is the prime example of where market should go.

    Great job! One thing anyone trying this on older backplanes should be aware of is some don't support the 'Power Disable Feature' provided by the SATA/SAS drive Pin 3 of larger/more modern hard drives. If a smaller, older drive spins up when insert into the backplane, but a newer typically 6+ TB drive doesn't then this is the issue. I have an older Lenovo server I refused to e-waste. Thinking it was something wrong with the backplane I finally discovered the reason and an easy solution. I just placed Kapton tape over pin 3 on each of the drives I'm using as detailed here ua-cam.com/video/9W3-uOl4ruc/v-deo.html

    Mini PCs are great for all sorts of projects. I bought the 600 version of this a few years back (at the time it was $220 AUS) with an i7 6700T, 16GB of RAM and 256GB NVME for a retro gaming PC. There's also Dell and Lenovo's in similar form factors. For a HTPC, I don't think the HP would look out of place on a TV unit. You can sometimes save money if you buy them without memory or drives but in a lot of cases, they can supply this pretty cheap compared to buying new. At least if they have a warranty and you have the RAM and drives and you have issues, you can send it back for a replacement or money back if you bought from a refurbish seller. One thing you need to look out for is overheating on these types of refurbished machines. I had issues with mine initially where it would just stop and reboot. I ended up removing and applying new heatsink paste and giving the fan and heatsink a dust (which wasn't all that bad)

    Nice work, far better than my own janktastic Dell T5810 "thing" but then mine is for a somewhat different usecase, found it cheap with 32gb, quadcore xeon and 500gb disk -- it is now a 96gb ram equipped 14core with 2Tb SSD and 10Tb HDD and a Quadro P4000 GPU. Not what you'd expect from the outside as the front has transport damage making it a proper jankylooking sleeper. The GPU is for AI LLM stuff and encoding but the thing can play games too, better than I expected based on the cores being pretty slow on the e5-2683v3 it has. Also stuffed a 4port GBE in it, so it can run properly isolated VM's with multiple dedicated cores, ram and NIC. There are probably "smarter" ways to arrive at a similar result but I absolutely did not want a heavyass rackserver or something too loud to sleep in the same room with. It has an ML350G10 next to it that serves as the storage server among other duties, the ML350 has one 2,5" and one 3,5" disk cage, the smaller one stuffed with mirrored 480Gb SSD's for boot and 3x 15krpm SAS 900gb drives for fast storage, and the bigger cage has 16Tb bulk storage drives. So with a 10GBE in the HP fiber linked with Mikrotik CRS310 plus the DELL 1+ quad gigabit for now it's a decent homelab I think.

    • @serverscience
      @serverscience Місяць тому

      There typically isn't much benefit to using SAS drives in setup like this, so I would personally just use SATA. Mixing drive types within an array or ZFS pool is typically not recommended. Considering the ML150 G6 supported 6 gigabit SAS when it was new, the backplanes should support SATA3 speeds with no issues.

    These are Delta double ball bearing fans aren't they? I really wouldn't replace them. Maybe take out the bearings and put some heavy grease on the shaft to damp the bearing rattle against it, maybe wash the bearings themselves first in degreaser then when dry in gear oil if they no longer feel great, or replace just the bearings. Fundamentally these fans are built to outlive us all.

    • @serverscience
      @serverscience Місяць тому

      That is a good point, and definitely something I should look into. The original front fan doesn't work, but the rear fan definitely still has some life in it. However, the main reason I would consider replacing them is noise, since they are very loud.
