Orchids in bloom and garden room catch-up
Переглядів 62 роки тому
A couple of my orchids came into bloom so I thought it would be a wonderful time to share them, plus looking around at the health of my houseplants in general and how things are going in the garden room.
Summer 2021 Houseplant Tour

A short visit through the houseplants I have indoors right now. I got a sweet little mini phal in bloom, most of the rest of the orchids are still working on maybe giving me blooms in autumn. Everything is refreshing and green.

Checking in with my houseplants after ten days away. I have the tiniest anthurium clarinervium now! Will it survive? A bit of catching up on propagations - will my philodendron melanochrysum cutting root? And a general look around at the state of the plants in the garden room.
My Wrong Opinions About the Plant World
Переглядів 243 роки тому
Of course, I think I'm right! But these are definitely subjective opinions. Some a little spicy, some just silly. Pet houseplant world dislikes, an entire category of plants that I just don't care for aesthetically, and because it's me, some unavoidable politics. (I cut at least three minutes of discussing economic protectionism so it's not as bad as it could be.)
Jewels among jewels terrarium - jewel orchids with unique hardscaping

I fell head first in love with jewel orchids after buying my first one, so I decided to make a cute little glass jar terrarium with some sparkly hardscaping to set off the fancy and beautiful little orchids.

    Don’t worry it will grow again. Just sit it on the window sill and wait. Keep the soil moist or better yet just place the roots/stump in moss. It stays moist longer and you can watch the roots growing and generating life. I have killed a few Alocasian in my plant life, and many have come back from the Light. Actually it’s alive but has no leaves to generate photosynthesis so the new plants come from the bulbs. Does it have any? If not it will have to build bulbs and that might take some time, BUT it will happen as long as the moisture conditions are continued. I have had Red Secrets die and after months on the sill out springs 2 babies. Don’t give up.

    Alocasia are by far my favorite variety and I own many including a azlanii, Alocasia can die back to the stump for many reasons, as a rule I never repot a alocasia for a minimum of 3 months after purchase even though its tempting, during shipping or change of environment can put them in a state of shock, repotting them can accelerate this, in most cases they will die back to the stump, 99% of the time the stump will stay dormant but not die and will grow back once its replenished itself and the new growth will be aclimatised to your environment, only ever repotting in spring or summer too, In my personal experience I find tap water to be bad for alocasia too causing the leafs to brown in patches and ultimately die due to the chlorine so I save spent aquarium water to give to them or rainwater, do you still have your azlanii?

    • @velvetvert9431
      @velvetvert9431 2 роки тому

      I have been able to rebloom a few orchids! Not too consistently yet. Two factors, I think - for the ones that can tolerate it, they go out into part-shade outdoors the whole summer. Then some of them need a cold snap/drop in nighttime temperatures to prompt blooming. I also hear good things about fertilizing but I don't do it enough!

      Hi! Nice to hear from you! The rattlesnake calathea has honestly just been incredibly low maintenance from day one. I don't know what I'm doing right but I'm not changing anything now. So the musaica is in the same conditions - down low near the humidifier and not too close to the grow light, and I hope it does as well! Hope you've been well in this hot summer!

    That fern is gorgeous, I wish I had space for one of those! Ugh, pests are sooooo annoying! Mealies are a nuisance because they seem to treble in numbers so quickly. If you have rubbing alcohol use that. Its going to be a pain in the 🍑 to go over the entire plant and wipe them off with a q tip dipped in alcohol but it should solve the problem. And if you can repot asap that helps too, maybe try and remove the top couple of inches of soil cause thats where they usually live. Wishing health to the plant, you got this💪!

      Hiii! Hope you are well! I'm glad you enjoy the terrarium chat - I'm obsessed with how cute everything looks in it. I have a theory about the alocasia - maybe if it was just a normal cutting it wouldn't root, but since it was basically the entire plant snapped off just above the roots, that's why it's putting out roots? I don't know, but not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

    Hi I have the halo fire cracker and it’s not doing too great it’s never bloomed out however I do have a new leaf but I would need to know about the roots on man the roots is like a bunch of hair hanging down from it and I wanted to re-pot it but I’m wondering if I repotted it wrong to begin with how are your re-potted in what kind of medium and how often do you fertilize it and when is the bloom time on it

    • @velvetvert9431
      @velvetvert9431 3 роки тому

      Hi! I got mine in spike so I haven't managed to rebloom it yet. I hope it will bloom probably late summer. It has lots of new growth, but it will need time outdoors with good partial shade and warmth over summer to get it all the way to blooming, I think. I have it potted in oncidium mix from repotme.com. I only water when the bark is dry at least two inches deep in the pot. It's possible that the roots on yours aren't doing well - when you say they're hanging down like hairs do you mean above the potting mix, or do you mean when it was out of the pot they looked like hair?

    • @elayneplanche4031
      @elayneplanche4031 3 роки тому

      I am parted it to look at the roots and that’s what they look like a cut some of them back like I saw done in a video and re-parted it and fertilized it so I’m gonna wait and see what happens but I heard they don’t go outside that you’re supposed to keep them inside are used to bark in the large size and the moss to re-plant

    • @velvetvert9431
      @velvetvert9431 3 роки тому

      @@elayneplanche4031 No, they can definitely go outside in summer. Mine really benefit from it. Depends on your climate, but mine do not get enough light and warmth to bloom well spending the entire year indoors. Your mileage may vary.

      It should be similar but when you do see one next I’d love to see photos and hear from you about what you make of it. I did even more digging on line today about the reproductive structures of paphs and if she’s in good shape when the bloom eventually falls, we may peer even deeper!

    That was very clear and well-presented! Thank you!

    I could fall asleep listening but for how much I want to keep watching. The oncostele and oncidium are just ... rioting with bloom! Amazing how long the blooms on the longest spike (of the former) have been looking so spectacular. Also the patio palm looked visibly bigger from last time. So many lovely plants with their many greens and bright spots of new growth... 💚
