Bit of a mixed message. 12,000 deaths a year from occupational exposures, is this from people being exposed to substances in offices or workshops? Also, is this the true number? I read the HSE stats as 8,000 deaths from occupational cancer (and a further 13,500 new registered cases each year) and a further 12,000 from the respiratory diseases such as asthma. If you look at the cancer stats, excluding asbestos exposure, exposure to mineral oils, silica and diesel exhaust emissions are the three biggest categories. Welders and chromium are on the list. I didn't see offices on the list, unless there is another list I am not aware of? Perhaps Dr Hywel should speak to the guys at ILEVE (which is a division of CIBSE) a bit more often and understand the figures better. If you want to reduce these deaths CIBSE and others need to focus on the real cause of air pollution. Maintaining and serving AHU's is important and should be carried out by competent persons. I am all for clean air for all but let's be clear and accurate with our messaging and not scaremonger people.
