Why I’ve not been riding my Giant Revolt
I’ve been thinking recently why I always choose my 2018 CaadX ahead of my Revolt even though the Revolt is Carbon and has newer tech. I think aesthetics play a greater role than we think.

    I wonder how different this geometry is from a CAADX 2021. I might try fitting chunky 45mm also on my 2021 CAADX 105. Maybe more like 40mm because of the 2X set-up. Sick set-up!

      @@jonathangervais9371 I would say they're identical although the 2x set-up you have will restrict 45mm tyres as you said. I think 2x is better anyway, but 45s are nice on this bike! Both bikes are modelled on Cannondale’s SuperX carbon CX bike.

    Hi!! Hope you can help me out. I currently have a GT Grade as a Do It All. 2 wheelsets as well (Rival + GX mullet so heavier than your drivetrain) The bike itself weights 8.6kg in the road setup and 9.02 gravel setup with pedals, mounts and cages. I am thinking about in a Revolt due to the larger tire clearance I am pushing 44mm in a 42mm Max. I am sticking to 1by and keeping only 1 bike. Do you think the geometry of the Revolt Advanced does good in the road setup? Is the only complain is about the gearing weight/jumps etc) ? I am also thinking about the new GT Grade model and the Canyon Grizl. I think the Revolt would have the lighter frame and I like the internal tool storage.

    • @BikeLife154
      @BikeLife154 Місяць тому

      @@caioqc2 the geometry of the revolt is fine for a road setup. If you wanted you could obviously run it with more spacers or slam it depending on your preference. I ride my revolt mostly on the roads these days with a 1x setup and it’s doable, but it’s far from the excitement you get from a pure road bike. My main complaint was the gearing. I still believe for road you’d be better off buying a 2x Revolt. However, unless you really WANT a new bike you’d be better off sticking with the Grade if 42-44mm tyres are enough for you. I haven’t run anything over a 45mm in my Revolt since my experiment with MTB tyres at the very beginning of owning it. At the end of the day I can’t make the decision for you, but if I was in the position to buy now, I’d buy a Specialized Crux with all their crazy discounts! That bike is ideal for road and gravel duty! Cheers and choose wisely!

    I just tried squeezing in 42c pathfinder pros on my caadx and there isn't enough clearance in the back with the chainstays but that's on a set of dt swiss g1800 with a 24mm inner width. It makes the tires measure out to 44mm. I'm surprised you can get 45c tires on it. Love the caadx, i use it with 30c slicks and ride exclusively road with it. It's such a versatile frameset.

    • @BikeLife154
      @BikeLife154 3 місяці тому

      @makeshift78 what year is your CaadX? I'm pretty sure they increased the tyre clearance on the 2018 models and later which I own. In fact, they made a number of changes to the X in 2018. My spinergy wheels are only 19mm internals and I'm running 1x which means no front mech for extra clearance. I probably have 3-5mm clearance either side of the back tyre. I agree totally with your views of the bike. I loved it from the first day of ownership. Cheers!

    • @makeshift78
      @makeshift78 3 місяці тому

      @@BikeLife154 I'm running 2x and the tire still clears the mech, but the chainstays i get "whisker" rub from tires with about 1mm clearance of the side knobs. Lots of clearance on the center tread. My frame is a 2017 and i wasn't aware that they made changes to the clearance, just that they included the SE spec with 37c stock tires on i19 rims.

    The flip chip adjusting is definitely a Dudley thing but has benefitted me as I improve as a rider. I started in the longer wheelbase for more stability and have since moved to the shorter as my skills and control have improved. For that I think it’s super useful. It’s also nice for races - I’ve moved it when I know a race is gonna be more cyclocross-like with sharper turns and longer wheelbase for races I know are gonna be rowdy. Definitely not a gimmick as it can give you two slightly different bikes but there are some downsides for sure

    Those seeking wider tyre clearance should opt for drop bar 29er or Monstercross/adventure bikes instead of Gravel bikes as they are made mainly for slimmer off road tyres for gravel races. A drop bar 29er monstercross/adventure bike can go everywhere where Gravel bikes might have limits. Both are fast on respective land surfaces but the monstercross can go anywhere. Safe riding all.

    You are throwing away your tyres way too soon. The effacement of the rear tread pattern does not mean that the tread is worn through, far from it. Veloflex themselves make that clear. The tyres still have more more than half of their lives left by that point. The cut to the front's sidewall is a good reason to stop riding that tyre. Tyres can be repaired, however. I always have lengths of tyre casing salvaged from previous tyres that I use to repair such cuts. For glue, I use the cement from inner tube repair kits.

    Commenting a year too late haha! I hummed and hawwed about switching to the Mezcal 2.1 then I came across this vid. Thanks for being the Guinea pig! The clearance was my worry as the 2.1 comes out to a hair over 53mm. On my 2022 Advanced I’ve been using the 44mm Mezcal for bikepacking and, by far, are my favorite tire, even those times you find yourself on pavement. It’s just a shame Vittoria does not make it in a 700x50. This season will involve bikepacking single track, fire roads and some pavement in the Rockies so I ended up going with WTB Venture 700x50 (toss up between Teravail Cannonballs). To sum it up, 50mm seems to be the sweet spot if going big. Lots of clearance as you’ve found out. When not bikepacking, I’m definitely sticking with the Mezcal 44’s. Thanks for the review.

      @timwhitelaw3344 - I guess I was just lucky. Just bought a matt black and it matched really well. Almost the same shade of black. If you do it make sure you use 600 grit paper or higher with water and don’t sand back to the carbon. Tape off the drop outs and spray all coats of paint within 15-20 minutes of each other. Most paints now you don’t leave overnight and sand between coats.

We all know chain line is super important, and no I didn’t really want to go back to BB30 but saw no alternative if I wanted to run this bike with a 1x drivetrain smoothly.
