Coventry Cathedral a dynamic centre of worship and mission, a place of pilgrimage, liturgical creativity, healing; a focus for reconciliation; education and the arts; a venue for national services and broadcasts; a focal point for the City, Diocese and even for the world.
Canon Mary Gregory Reconciliation Interview
Just before Canon Mary leaves us in February 2025 as Canon for Arts and Reconciliation - our first for Arts, but our seventh for Reconciliation - we sat down to talk to her about her own time here and what wisdom she has to share. Do watch this new addition to the reconciliation series where we sit with the Canons for Reconciliation who have worked with us over the years!
Ten years ago our American CCN partners funded a project to capture the voices and reflections of all six Canons for Reconciliation that there had then been in the lifetime of the (new) Cathedral. The resulting series of filmed interviews have been viewed and used to inspire and teach very many times in the intervening years, and still hold so much relevance today.

Form of a Servant at Coventry Cathedral
I live in Bloxwich Walsall and I've been too Coventry Several times and I Cannot Understand why the old Coventry Cathedral wasn't Rebuilt after the war as My late Mother came from Great Yarmouth and the Biggest Church in that Town was also Bommed and that Church was Rebuilt
Who pays for their outfits
I can’t help feel that whilst there is an overlap (in that they are based on engaging the community) that arts and reconciliation are different focuses and having these focuses combined will lead to one or the other missing out. God bless the whole team and whoever is the new Canon.
Praise the Lord. I'm Dennis from Delhi, India.
I had the opportunity to visit Coventry over the summer, and it was such an extraordinarily moving experience. Every since I first heard Britten's War Requiem in college and learned more about this place and the philosophy behind it, I've dreamed of making a pilgrimage here. Now that I've been, I want to go back. Thank you for this tour.
She's cute, like @Charagrin said though, I feel like preying on teens to do volunteer jobs as a means to "get experience" is dirty, they're still performing work for you, you could at least compensate them for their time. I guess religious folk think differently though, contributing to their community and a sense of belonging is a reward on it's own I guess.
Billion dollar property, millions raised yearly, millions not paid in taxes yearly, a million in renovations yearly. Literally wont pay teenagers. Sounds about right.
Keep up the good work, Matt. You're doing a great job.
A kid stole them and they were just “discovered.” Man, if they weren’t stolen, we would have had world peace and no A-hole like Joe Biden.
Nice rendering of Widor!
Get on the blower with the Harrisons. They've been doing outstanding work on restoring and reconfiguring several cathedral organs over the past 15 years. This is one of theirs btw...
It's without doubt one of Harrison's finest creations and must be theirs to restore. My donation is on its way.
Let's hope common sense prevails and the Harmonic Trumpets on the Solo are restored to their original glory after having been fiddled with unwisely.
..and now in the middle East it is happening again. 😕
TERRIFIC VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you
Absolutely beautiful.
Hi Rachel ... I have enjoyed this recording of you playing this Sonata, loved your composure and steadiness all through even when you got a glitch with the cross. This organ ... Unspeakable ! beautiful stops and colour of sound as for that thunderous reed stop at 9:03 .. hands up !!!! Be blessed indeed for sharing this beautiful piece of music.
Coventry was a legitimate military target. The RAF had already bombed cities and towns in Germany for six months.
Wow, during a tour of the United Kingdom in 2004, we were inside these ruins of the damaged Cathedral. Beautifully restored for visitors to see, the new Cathedral, adjacent to the entrance and across the road, Coventry University was flying the South African Flag.
Our Beloved Cathedral 🙏
I came to this video after watching an episode of "Look at life" from 1960, about Coventry (on Talking Pictures TV) Thank you so much Dean Wicombe for this amazing tour of the old and new cathedrals, with all your helpful explanations and personal insights. I found it very moving. The Spirit of reconciliation feels so strong there. I hope to visit for the first time, in the not too distant future.
What a wonderful presentation. I used to live in Coventry and on my way home from school I often visited the old and the New Cathedrals. I recall my dad bringing me to watch the helicopter positioning the metalwork spire.
I just visited there this past September. We actually met a German lady visiting. She said ‘how sad’….
Let us remember that Hitler was a Catholic, and that the Vatican signed the Concordat, the first major international legitimization of the Nazi regime. There was no Christianity in the White Rose movement that we know of. But if it makes you fell better, very well.
thankyou.. not been to Coventry, this makes me realise i should visit.. 🙂 x
i am astonished at the rebuilding in germany
echo.. echo.. echo...
wonderful sentiment, about not just what was lost but what has been gained also.. thankyou 🙂 x
There was a San Francisco Chronicle Writer in Coventry that night who said the firestorm was so bright that he could read his notes by the light of the flames
Wow, beautiful and moving. Thank you.
i been here on school trip
A beautiful place of reconciliation
The cathedral really has stood the test of time. Despite having a mother who grew up Coventry, I never really visited the cathedral until on a school trip back in about 1978 (by this time, we lived many miles away). It was quite stunning then, and it is still stunning. Perhaps because of having relatives in Coventry, I have a fondness for modernist buildings as the city always seems futuristic back in the 1970s.
im from coventry love the history do you do tours or? any fun things for day out
I was lucky to come here and can say it really does have a terrific emotive energy in the space he speaks of. Thanks for the tour
Thank you very much, I am from Coventry and this has made me feel less homesick.
It was true that Churchil must let German to bomb city in order to keep scret fact that allys desipher Emigma code?
One of my very favourite places. Full of symbols and beauty. I first saw it as a teenager 45 years ago. The Baptistry window reduces me to tears every time I see it. Great video, thank you.
Thank you for this fascinating and heartfelt guide. You should link this up with the 1975 film of Tangerine Dream playing in the new cathedral. It shows off the spectacular artwork and glass. ua-cam.com/video/bGByDwiiECw/v-deo.html
I'm writing a university paper on the history of Coventry Cathedral, and this tour was not only informative but very personable. Thank you!
Fantastic service with beautiful music from Rachel and Oliver
Damn shame it was not rebuilt... If in a thousand years, man will still say this was one of England's greatest losses...
Hamburg's St. Nicholas Cathedral also stands in ruins
+++
Great video very well shot and narrated
I have to wach this for school 🙄🙄🙄 and it's stupid and dum
You should have paid attention in School and improved your spelling. Then you wouldn't come across as an illiterate idiot!
Its a terrible shame that they didnt restore the ruined cathedral, rather than build that hideous monstrosity they call the new cathedral. It is so ugly and such a wast of money and materials. Very sad.
Given the devastation of the blitz across the city wouldn't you rather have it spent on rebuilding the city as a whole, rather than just one building. Many other cities felt the same devastation and demolished the ruins, the ruins in Coventry stand as that memorial. The new cathedral may not be your choice of style, but has a place in faith and is reminiscent of many other styles of ecclesiastical design the ruins themselves are still consecrated.. Many love the new building, and as someone who attended services there (and graduated there) the building has an amazing sense of peace and openers, and is a legally protected structure as the the ruins.
@@paintedpilgrim littrely you dont need to be so harsh
@@tictactoy1237 they called it a hideous monstrosity, is that not harsh.
I totally agreed.the new cathedral is ugly and don’t really reflect the beauty of God through art.
I agree. That new Cathedral is ugly as Hell and a slap in the face to what was lost. I am going to start a petition to rebuild the old St. Michael's Cathedral.
Thank you for this heartfelt tour. I've always felt close to Coventry Cathedral because as a child in Sunday School in the US I collected pennies, nickels and dimes to help finance the building of the new cathedral. I really appreciate the tour starting at the first cathedral (only last week I watched the Time Team show of that excavation.) And then proceeding forward into present time. From this video I enjoyed seeing the cathedral architecture used or referenced in the new cathedral. I am particularly moved by your mission to promote forgiveness and peace on Earth.
As a coventarian and someone who has grown up with the cathedral asa fixture of our lives l thank you. I am of the Sikh faith and now live away but always love the cathedral complex as a place of amazing spirituality and openess
After WWII European countries ravaged by war and razed to the ground by the RAF used their share of the $15 billion Martial plan aid package to rebuild their infrastructure and historic buildings to such perfection it is hard to imagine today that they once lay utterly destroyed. Britain on the other hand bulldozed what remained of historic cities like Coventry and replaced what once was with crass meaningless concrete and squandered the money on the creation of a welfare state. You couldn't make it up.
It's the Marshall plan after U.S. General George Marshall.
I wonder whether the generation who went through the war would rather Marshall monies be spent on their buildings or their welfare? Never forget it was the Germans who started the war, and their bombing of Coventry provided the blueprint for the raids that followed. As usual politicians/ the elite start the war - and the ordinary people suffer. The erection of a new cathedral and retention of ruins of the old mean we cannot forget the evil inflicted on Coventry.
Very interesting. Thanks for the great service to commemorate that November night.
🎄✨😍👌
born in 1971 in Magdeburg/Germany my Good father Julian brought me to Coventry for a visit for the first time in my life a few years ago, this place is t h e so hopefully never ending memorial for german & british history which will get us never apart again
Antje Wilkommen nach England. Immer.
I was married here in 1969, and my years at the university from 1965 and then working in the city until 1973 brings back so many great memories. As a cathedral guide, I met people from probably every country in the world.
To all those who perished 80 years ago today, you are not forgotten. You are part of and a testament to, Coventry’s unbreakable spirit and will be so forever. In 2020, the Coventrians of today face our own hardships, as we adjust to a disrupted way of life and we worry just as much about what the future holds for us, as our forbears worried in 1940. They showed us strength of character, strength of community and strength of prayer. Let us follow the example that has been set for us and meet this new challenge with the same indomitable spirit and dignity as the Coventrians of 1940 met theirs. Father Forgive.
