On this channel you will find ever-growing playlists of classic literature narrated in a cozy, comforting tone that just may make you want to curl up under the covers and drift into dreamland. As great books take time however, many of these will be taken directly from my Twitch livestreams (www.twitch.tv/gentlefoxasmr), along with traditional prop- and trigger-based videos here and there.
But just who is this GentleFoxAsmr? He's a geographer and hobby linguist that's decided to spend his second act seeking moments of beauty and bliss in this curious world of ours. Trotting the globe isn't what it once was though, so instead of wandering he has chosen to lend his voice to a fantastic journey that will carry a select group of friends into the rich landscapes of literature.
And when can we expect updates? When we have a book ready to upload, expect several somethings a week. More traditional Asmr videos will be ad hoc.

The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico (Ch 9) (Gentle Reading)
Bernal Diaz del Castillo's "The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico" is a footsoldier's autobiography written as a rebuttal to the official biography of Hernan Cortez. Of the two it is also the more approachable work. The shift in focus from the famous conquistador to his troops gives the book the feel of a novel.
And you can actually read it as a novel if you like.... The original manuscript dates to the mid-1500's and it has been in the public domain for centuries, but in 1990 the extremely recognizable tale was adapted into the Maztica Trilogy by TSR, Inc. generally by removing a syllable or two from each name and reskinning a few characters as elves and dwarves.
As we begin chapter 9, do not look for some last olive branch that might lead to peace. Both conquistadors and Aztecs have been bloodied badly and the conflict has become personal for Guatemoc (Mexico's third king in as many weeks) and Cortez alike. Cortez' executes his rather insane plan to build and launch warships on the great lake. Guatemoc executes an ambush far more cunning than any of Montezuma's and very nearly drowns the conquistadors when he starts destroying flood control dikes. It's going to be an interesting battle.
Jorge Madrid's - The Fall of Tenochtitlan
(ua-cam.com/video/hioPuC_T_KI/v-deo.html) provides the principle background image and music in this piece. To add visual flair,, I have overlaid Sunrise, Moving Clouds and Flying Birds - Background Loop
(ua-cam.com/video/HDw0W_NEwJw/v-deo.html). Both are used under UA-cam's creative commons license and are credited here because I think they did great work.

Essentially accurate. And this account sets the foundation for that. Cortez and his actions have not stood the test of time and had the slimmest of legal pretense behind them.

Spanish Catholic White Christians, with the approval of the Catholic Pope and their 'God' invaded, plundered, raped, force-converted and colonized the people of Mexico, in violation of all *International laws and sovereignty* . Fortunately Spanish Catholic White Christians were defeated by the British and prevented from spreading their evil any further. But Mexico is still a divided country, the Native Indians are forced to worship a 'White God with a beard' while the invading white people remain the ruling rich and oppressive class.

Oh, I'm still finding the right mix for my channel. At the moment I'm uploading two series. The first is classic faerie tales like this one. The other is a biography of a conquistador. The videos in that series are much longer and I thought something relatively light hearted would be a good alternative.

Sounds like someone read the description, but you're absolutely right. Torturous vocabulary and heavyhanded metaphors aside, Joyce has made some great points throughout the book. It just takes a lot of work to tease out those words of wisdom.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, but no. This is the last part of "With Lawrence In Arabia". I'm still planning on uploading multi-chapter reading on Tuesdays & Thursdays, but August 1st we will begin Agatha Christie's "Death On The Nile". If you specifically want more historiography, I also do shorter single-chapter readings M,W,F and once the current run of Tarzan of the Apes ends that slot will be used for "Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz.
