Gerrymandering Exercise
Переглядів 717 місяців тому
As part of our US history this year, we did a short block on the US Constitution. Listening to the book that I had chosen for the spine of the Block, Fault Lines in the Constitution, they had a chapter that talked about drawing district lines and gerrymandering. I thought it would be a good idea to do an exercise on gerrymandering to give a better understanding. It also inadvertently provided q...

I tried to get on to your blog page about colouring the pegs, however the page doesn't exist.
Thanks for letting me know, Stella. I corrected it. Here's the link: thebeautyofplay.com/peg-dolls-skin-tones-using-natural-dyes/
Thanks so much. Right now skin tone wooden pegs are used frequently in kindergarten by the kindergarten programs.
I love that!
Thank you for thr idea
I’m so glad you liked it!
Will you make this into a math guide?
Probably not any time son. I do help people do this kind of thing in my subscription if asked though.
your blog post is gone what is the black stuff
@@disisdakris thanks for letting me know. Here’s a corrected link. thebeautyofplay.com/fall-window-cling-tutorial/ The black paint is fabric paint. Let dry 24 hours before using the tinted glue. We tint with food coloring.
wonderful technique that math is simple in Vedas
It's the most effective algorithm I know.
Great video thank you! I find it so helpful, interesting and mind boggling! Why is it that 3&7 (and the others) make the same shape? Seeing the patterns are so helpful but i feel like I'm still confused as to why they make these geometrical patters
They make the same shape because they are number bonds for the number 10 and the wheel is a 10-point circle. When counting by 7's we are essentially counting by 3's backwards because 10-7 is 3. Is that helpful?
Absolutely hated this. Dislike.
@@MojaKravica1985 what part? A counting wheel in general?
@@beauty_of_play Yeah, just not a big fan. Good video though cheers
I was wondering how to do the trains! Thanks!!!
Trains are rods placed end-to-end. So if you have a long line of rods, all end to end, this would be considered a train. I hope that helps.
Love these. I’m learning how to do faux stain glass. I’m going to try it with the glue and food coloring technique. Great instructions.
Oh, I'm glad. It's so easy and one of our favorite seasonal activities.
A simple but very effective explanation. Thank you so much. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You are welcome.
Hi, The kit I purchase at a local grocery store in Greensboro NC, has different instructions on step 2: inoculation. I did not get the needle and the instructions says to make an opening at the corner of the bag. I am concerned 😟 it will not get the same results. I am cultivating the Blue Oyster. Also, I cooked my rice and I am using ziplock bags. Please comment. 😊
Hi Rosasana, yes, Erin and I are currently working in a new video with the new inoculation procedure. It should still work. I do not know about the cooked rice in zip locks. The challenge with growing mushrooms is that they compete with many other common microorganisms such as mold and bacteria. It requires a sterile technique which is why I use the precooked bags that I purchase. She usually gives you more than enough inculcate, so you can still try. If it doesn’t work, store your income in the fridge and try again with the precooked bagged rice.
Thank you so much for sharing! As a newbie to chalkboards these are so valuable!
I’m so glad it is helpful.
Just ordered some thanks for the video!
Have fun!
What do you use for more independent math?
I make my own worksheets. I have used workbooks as source books that I take problems from like Jamie York's Making Math Meaningful, but I want to make sure I interleave a variety of math problems from concepts we've been studying, and I also want to make sure to cater to her strengths and weaknesses. Using a sourcebook for me to pull problems from allows me this flexibility. I think one could easily use any workbooks for a child's skill level and basically do the same thing. The challenge with workbooks that I have found is there is very little interleaving (a mix of a variety of different kinds of problems.) We can adjust this by choosing a few problems from several different pages. We did this for my son's college classes that were designed to introduce and concept and do what's called 'drill and kill.' This means they have one type of problem for the concept that he was introduced to over and over, but no interleaving. What we did was work ahead and have several different homeworks open at the same time, doing a few problems from different concepts each day. This spacing and interleaving, though it feels harder, allows for greater long-term retention. I hope that's helpful.
Hello Della very happy to have found you. Does this curriculum include stories (or book suggestions for stories) for introducing each number? It is a very complete curriculum and just what I was looking for - thank you!!! I just need to find stories 🙂
Hi Makao. I know I've answered you on Instagram, but I wanted to place a response here. I include a couple of books suggestions, but not a list of books for each number. I know Hana with @pepperandpine also did a Quality of Numbers, and I think she may have stories in hers. Our work really complements each other.
Thank you for the review, I will be getting this book. I am working on become a better teaching artist inthe new year! ❤😂
🙌 really amazing videos, thank you! Do you have a book or a curriculum to suggest, to guide on the steps of using the rods?
Sorry, I'm just seeing your comment. Yes, I have several options for support for math. I sell math guides/curricula for elementary ages, and I host a math coaching subscription on my site. You can find out more about those at www.thebeautyofplay.com
Please do more math videos! I was introduced to your channel by @alittleglamalotofmom, and instantly am loving it! This is the style of learning I really want to do with my children, but feel unequipped to lead them without a text book. About ready to take the leap though, because this looks so much more fun and engaging!
Oh, it’s definitely in the plans. I also sell curricular that has all kinds of these kind of activities in them. You can also find me on Instagram.
I learnt so much myself through this video, thank you! Healing my relationship with the math before teaching these to my children.
I plan to. You can also find me on Instagram. I have math guides available on my site as well that’s full of activities like these. Www.thebeautyofplay.com.
This is absolutely stunning!
Thank you so much.
Will these melt/stick to a window exposed to heat/sunlight/humidity?
I have not had them do this. However, we do not leave them for any extended time, over a couple of months. They do become brittle over time and will slowing cracks and fall apart.
Hi How do you get the black piping is it glue with black paint. Also is it clear glue or white...thanks Super cute!
All the directions are in my blog for you. The link is in the show notes.

What a beautiful way of organically becoming in touch with shape and exploring its dimensionalities physically. Watching the line part I imagined if you spun a line or stick around a standing point or stick and then projected light from above, you could see the spinning shadow create a circle !
I love that idea.
Thanks for the video! I have decided to purchase this book based off your review. Could you review task and contents if you have it or more Waldorf books?
I'll think about that. Do you have a book in particular that you are thinking of?
Pls do more geometry....painting and craft
I will try this with my students.. ..
Thank you :)
I'm only seeing Fractions 1 on your website. Is Fractions 2 not out yet?
Hi Pricilla. It's in the middle of editing. Hopefully I get it back soon, and can send it out.
VERY cool- they are so pretty!
They are! the Blue king are my favorite. They are also tasty.
is it clear glue or the white glue?
Sorry so late. It’s clear with food coloring added.
If you were wanting to do 2 separate units The Renaissance & The Middle Ages which one would you do first if you were trying to work chronologically or are they withing the same era ?
Sorry for the late reply. I would do Middle Ages first, but please note that the middle ages often called the dark ages, was isolated to Europe, because much of Afro Eurasia, at that time was having a very enlightened period. Loads of progress was being made by the Middle East, and buy the Asians, and definitely by the countries in Africa.
Beautiful work
Thank you so much 😀
Good 😊
Good drawing
Genius!!
Genius!!
That was beautiful! I wish I had learned math this way. That part at the end where you showed how to find LCM with the rods would have helped me as a kid!
I'm so glad it was useful.
hi :) lovely colors! how long do they stay in the dye pots?
I want to say roughly an hour. But I have all the details on my blog post. thebeautyofplay.com/2020/07/14/peg-dolls-skin-tones-using-natural-dyes/
Beautiful
Thank you.
Hi Della, I loved your video. You mentioned four subjects that you found tedious to do daily and instead you do two of them daily. I wasn’t clear on whether you do these subjects alongside your enrichment loop? (example math, copy work, geography and your block work) or is it integrated into your enrichment loop? I am also having a hard time with all these subjects daily and is looking for other alternatives that I wouldn’t otherwise consider. Also, does your enrichment loop follow the block you’re doing? Thank you in advance.
Hi Tina. The subjects that I was referring to were math, form drawing, Spanish, and copy work. We ended up putting those in a loop separate from our enrichment loop. So we have our main lesson, and then we do some thing from the enrichment loop, and then we do two items off of those four subjects on one day and then the following day we do the other two items. I basically just put them in another separate loop. Teaching all the subjects every single day was way too much for me, and this combination of Waldorf and Charlotte Mason is working really well for us. We have a unit study that we can dive really deep into like we enjoy, but then we hit smaller lessons in a loop schedule so everything gets done, but I’m not doing everything every day. I hope that helps; let me know if you have any other questions.
@@beauty_of_play I know you use your own curriculum for your math block, I purchased the Quality of Numbers and love it but I wanted to ask what other consistent math curriculum your daughter use in the math loop. Thank you for answering he other questions, they make perfect sense.
I know I already answered you privately, but I thought I would just put this up publicly. So I get a lot of inspiration from several different sources including Jamie Yorks Making Math Meaningful and Gattegno’s work. I also love educationunbox.com. But I don’t really use a curriculum and teaching her math. Because math is something that comes easier to me, most of the time I can see where we need to go next and have in my mind how I want to approach it. There are definitely things that I keep in mind as we go along like spacing, memory retrieval, and interleaving. Also try to approach it in a way that connects some thing that she already understands. I talk a little bit about this in the most recent curricula for addition and subtraction and for multiplication and division. I also list a few blogs, books, and curricula that have shaped my thoughts around math.
I hope you turn your geometry work into a curriculum for purchase. Sounds fabulous!
Thank you so much, Deborah. Possibly, it will be a while.😂
Hello dear, helped this vidoe alot to understand the concept but i m fail to multiply 4 digit by 2 digit by using verdic method will u plz explain that too. Thanks
Here's a video that has 4 by 4. Just recognize that if there is no digit in that place, then that digit is 0, so for the 2-digit place, the hundred and thousand place value will be 0. ua-cam.com/video/FdMGxZuKYiU/v-deo.html
