What Happened to the Disney Prince?
Movie Madness
Welcome to Movie Madness. Today we're talking about Disney princes and the possible reasons why Disney appears to have stopped using them in the mid-2010's and early 2020's. So what do you think? Do you think the Disney prince archetype often produced great characters and that to remove them is to do a disservice to the movies they're naturally a part of, or do you believe they've always been shallow characters and that Disney was better off getting rid of them?

How Horror Remakes Can Impact the Original
I think that Superman truly is the world’s greatest superhero. Because I understand that fitting into society is not always easy especially for someone from a different planet. I think that he is an awesome guy and alien 👽 to look up to and get good advice from and not just for children but for adults to look up to him too. I really do miss the classic cheesy 1970’s and 1980’s Superman movies when they used to be in movie theaters even though I was not born in the 70’s or 80’s. I ❤️ Superman!
23:55, I think you were giving The Golden Age Disney Princes too much credit but that you were spot-on about the Renaissance Disney Princes
23:48, yes
16:35, I would argue that the decline began with him. Since Frozen emphasized that Anna didn’t need a man to save her and, as a result, Kristoff ultimately did very little
13:31, yep. Aladdin is great
I imagine the disappearance of the princes is because of pressure from the media. It's part of the reason Shang got cut from the "Mulan" remake.
My favorite Toy Story movie is: Toy Story 2.
Me too.
When have we even last had a Disney movie with a male protagonist? If we are talking not a prince then Wreck it Ralph but then you have to go back to the 90s for Hercules and Aladdin. I’m including Hercules even though you didn’t in this video because his father is the King of the gods so in a way he’s a prince. Also I get that he’s a Lion but I would have included Simba in this video too.
That's a good point, but Hercules and Simba aren't considered official Disney Princes, hence why I didn't mention them. But Disney has had male main characters since Wreck-It Ralph, with Hiro from Big Hero 6 and Searcher Clade from Strange World being two good examples. But I do still see what you're getting at.
@@moviemadness2536 true there is Hiro but he’s not in a traditional Disney Princess movie and Clade a hear no one talk about Strange World like it doesn’t exist.
You forget Prince Hans who threw the trope under the bus
He's not an official Disney Prince, that's why I didn't include him.
@@moviemadness2536I understand that but I do think that that character is still a big part of why Disney shifted away from princes
Disney Princes have character traits that a good partner should have but after Kristoff Disney thought that their Princess needed no men in reality, women often love romance.
Emperor's New groove is amazing with it's characters. Yzma is such a relateable villain to the extent. KRONK IS A LAUGH RIOT! Kuzco's character journey with Pacha was great. Pacha is the best character in the film because of John Goodman respectfully. John Goodman was perfect as Fred Flintstone in the Live action Flintstones movie that no one talks about.......and the Underrated Squeal.
Yep, The Emperor's New Groove definitely knew what it was doing, and the results were hilarious.
I think people get caught up in the “she doesn’t need a man!” mentality, forgetting that many of the princesses worked alongside the prince in their respective stories. The prince rarely worked alone to “save the day”.
Agreed
This video is AMAZINGGGG!!! You explained the nuances of these princes with a lot of perspective and the thing about them "proving the villains wrong" genuinely made me see the movies in a new light. So thank you for this video 💕
Thank you very much. I'm always happy to hear when somebody thinks I did a good job with one of my videos. It was a pleasure to make it, I'm glad you thought so highly of it. Thank you again.
I don't know why my favorite Disney men are the ones who turn into an animal to learn a lesson (Beast, Kuzco and Naveen) but I'd like more of that. It's the narrative necessarily making their characters more complex and interesting because before they coasted on good looks being enough.
I think you just explained why you like that yourself. It forces them to realize that there's more to a person than how they look.
@@moviemadness2536 I suppose I wondered because it is a bit of a funny route to take, very tropey, but somehow some of their best movies involve it. And I didn't mention Zootopia because Nick is nowhere near a prince/human who turns into an animal, but nevertheless is an animal who learns not to judge based on how someone appears. Disney always nails that theme with their male characters, for whatever reason.
@@bespectacledheroine7292 It is strange, but you can't argue with the results. Disney knows how to tell people they matter no matter what. I'd say they should go back to focusing a bit more on that...
Love this video, i agree with many of the points made
Thank you very much.
Lovely vid, I haven't actually seen any disney princess movies other than tangled and frozen and coz I didnt like frozen at all I never bothered to see anyother. Now I'd be much interested to see those in order to see the prince and say "See literally me"
They are really beautiful films and the music and voice acting always top notch. Brave, Princess and the Frog, Beauty and the beast, and Mulan are ones I'd recommend if you don't watch any others.
I didnt know brave had a prince. I'll figure out a way to watch those old films in my native language, I have no idea if the voice acting quality will be as top notch as english, but we'll see. I can remember robin hood having very rough voice acting in finnish but I fully adore that old roughness in the translation and sound
@aurinkovuohi3828 there are a few princes, they are more comedic side characters. But it's just one of the best disney princess movies, and i it was the start of the "princess without a prince" trend. Edit: the later movies will probably habe better translations, I know Princess and the frog specifically has amazing singers in each translation. I hope you enjoys !!!
@aurinkovuohi3828 Give some of the movies I mentioned in the video a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Will do, thank you my brothers in Christ, Godspeed!!
Nice video! I don't know why you elongate some word endings when speaking, it is frustrating.
Maybe it's their accent? Prob midwest
@@RingingRoses from the Midwest, we don’t talk like that. 😂
@asen434 Yeah, sorry about that, I know I talk weird sometimes. But thanks for the compliment.
1:52 Tbf, these movies are titled Cars, not Lightning McQueen
Excellent point there. I almost wish I had said that myself.
The importance of a good microphone
My budget is tight, I'm sorry to say. But I will concede I was having some audio problems at the beginning of the video, but it only lasts until about two minutes in. The rest is normal/better.
I actually like both movies. Cars 2 is definitely miles better tho. I love that movie
This is an unpopular opinion but Cars 2 is actually my favorite Cars movie. I know that it was different but I really like the spy plot.
Hey, personally I don't think Cars 2 is all that bad myself. I even dedicated a whole other video to explaining that.
I actually have an idea why Disney stop creating them: Radical feminism and the girl boss culture. Modern society wants to convince women that they don't need men for anything (not even for romantic love) and that they are all stronger by themselves. Except that modern society forgot something: Men and women actually need each other when it comes to keeping humanity alive! I'm not saying that everyone should reproduce or date the opposite sex, but personally, i really don't like the idea of convincing a person that they don't need anyone who is different from them for nothing (in that case, someone from a different sex or gender) and how this is treated as something "outdated".
2:02, I’m one of the people who say that
Well, like I said in the video, considering how difficult they were to animate, they weren't really given a fair chance.
@@moviemadness2536Fair point
First
"Can you imagine Shakespeare killing off his characters because he was tired of them?" (18:35) - we may just have an example of that in the character of Falstaff who became so immensely popular in "Henry IV" part 1 and 2 that Shakespeare bumped him off, off-stage even, in "Henry V". Tradition has it that he was forced by royal decree to revive him in "Merry Wives of Windsor".
I was referring more to main characters, particularly ones who's story clearly didn't involve them dying.
Agreed. He WAS worked into a movie sequel Playstation game, though!
True, but at least that was better.
Hey my friend do you think we could get a Wreck it Ralph 3?And i mean a good one like what cars 3 did to cars 2?not that i dont like cars 2 i actually love it LOL
Well, it's hard to say. Because as I pointed out in the video, Cars 2 was self-contained enough so that if the third one wanted to ignore it (which it did), it could without any issue. But a third Wreck-It Ralph movie wouldn't have the same luxury, it would be fighting an uphill battle from the word go. And not to mention, people at Disney have said that they aren't too interested in doing a third movie, and honestly, considering what I just said, I do think that's for the best.
This probably the only version of Eddie Brock be pure evil, most other versions of Venom who are pure evil its the symbiote.
Yeah, Eddie Brock was downright horrible in this movie, and the symbiote only made him even worse.
14:34, yes. By far
Agreed
12:58, if only that were a high bar
Yes, if only.
2:50, it doesn’t character assassinate the protagonist
Exactly
2:36, agreed
saying a movie is better than wreck it ralph 2 is not saying a lot
I know. I think that comparison says more for how bad Ralph Breaks the Internet actually is rather than anything favorable for Cars 2.
@@moviemadness2536Agreed
To me, Cars 2 may have been a bad movie but at least it was somewhat entertaining. Rbti was just boring to me personally.
That is true. If nothing else, at least it can work as some dumb fun. Ralph Breaks the Internet, not so much.
think you could do a video on Tighten/Hal Stewart vs Gaston from Beauty and The Beast
I'll definitely consider that at some point down the line. Thank you for the suggestion.
Hal Stuart DOES have some moments of brilliance like Megamind. When you consider he WAS READING that "Greatest Villains of all time" book, AND adequately communicates his SPITE towards others with his "Request not found" and "Bite Me" shirt, He DOES convey his passions and motivation WELL even IF they are dark ones. He's at LEAST not illiterate. He ALSO has creativity when you see his crayon drawing of his expanded Titan "Villain version" costume where he ALSO depicts Megamind on a Dog collar and leash. He IS angry. BUT while he was patrolling the city AFTER his failed attempt to court Roxanne Richie, he doesn't IMMEDIATELY fly into a frenzy and attack her and "Bernard". He instead decides being a Hero is "For Losers" and uses his powers to steal a new bike, video game, and several Hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash to treat and advance HIMSELF! It was learning Megamind and Bernard were the same person that unwittingly drew him out into the open for their "Duel". Hal WAS "dumb" for proposing to "Team up" with Megamind RIGHT after Roxanne tried to WARN him about Megamind's plan, however! I DID say He had MOMENTS of brilliance! >;)
Yeah, he has his moments, but not TOO many of them.
@@moviemadness2536 lol
Personally loving Cars 2 myself (and I feel it deserves so much better, plus I wish we got Finn McMissile, Holley Shiftwell, Francesco Bernoulli and presumably more of the new characters), I agree it's much, much better than Ralph Breaks the Internet, which I indeed was disappointed with by the start of the third act. Cars 2 tried to keep the characters like themselves, and I do personally love the spy action and Mater being the main character, while Ralph Breaks the Internet made Vanellope want to move to a different game without considering all the Sugar Rush fans that loved her and Ralph selfishly hacking a virus into the Slaughter Race game just to get Vanellope back into his life. I can't understand why the writers decided to go that way for those two; I would rather have wanted to see Felix and Calhoun handle raising the Sugar Rush racers as their adoptive kids! But no, all we got was Vanellope living in Slaughter Race with no consequences about the Sugar Rush players missing her! 😠 The only scene I really like from Ralph Breaks the Internet is Vanellope meeting the Disney Princesses; at least that had some creativity and good in-jokes. I'm glad Cars 2 learnt to have Mater and Lightning McQueen make up after one mistake in their friendship, with thanks to John Lasseter just wanting to make the story of them travelling the world. 🙂 Cars 2: Miles better (no pun intended) Ralph Breaks the Internet: Big thumbs-down
Pretty well put, I'd say. They COMPLETELY screwed up Ralph Breaks the Internet. Even the biggest haters of Cars 2 can at least admit that the sequel didn't destroy the characters and left a potential third installment with nowhere to go. If it wanted to, it could plausible ignore the events of the previous film and still be good. (Which is exactly what Cars 3 did.)
dude, work on that voice
I do my best. Not everybody is blessed with the voice of Morgan Freeman.
A proof Cars 2 isn't a horrible movie but a horrible sequel.
I guess that's one way to put it.
my favourite actor and one of my fav persons. to me is by far the most skilled in the Horror Mount Rushmore. even when he plays "his" character, there's a lot of different nuances between Prospero and Roderick Usher. Look at his eyes in House of Wax, that's building a character. i never understood why he didn't appear in big productions of the 70s, a golden age for many classic actors, who had more interesting and real roles, whilst they'd bring prestige, myth and carats to the production. maybe the stereotype was too over the talent when he was alive… i miss him a lot on that period, from the Agatha Christie movies, more Columbo, the catastrophe genre, the european cinema, to true classics from the decade. bless him, thank you for turning so impolutely Edgar Poe into images, Vincent.
👏
I love how this is probably the best Disney villain that is sympathetic as all others and even in movie outside of Disney villains are A always have to show there issues or B have a plot twist that there actually good people that have been trapped (literally). One of the best examples is Moana which shows both of these types. Nyx you can see her faults come from her misunderstandings and less a personal vendetta against anyone. Probably one of the best sympathetic villains in any series of movies, why Disney didn’t use this example I will never truly know. Well at least we have movies like twisters and such that have no true “villains”. Very good video
Very well put. Sometimes, villains just need to be villains, the audience doesn't ALWAYS have to feel sorry for them. But to be fair, I did make another video arguing that Long John Silver was another good example of a sympathetic Disney villain done right.
you made a good point to how Cars 2 was better in one aspect compared to Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Thanks, I'm happy you found my video so informative and worth the time. Feedback always helps. And I agree, Ralph Breaks the Internet screwed up BIG TIME.
Glad you have proven something about Cars 2. Nowhere near as good as the first film but definitely better than RBTI
Thank you for the compliment. And yeah, Cars 2 isn't a masterpiece, but it didn't screw up NEARLY as bad as Ralph Breaks the Internet did.
I saw the Original Broadway cast in the 70s when in NYC and MOST people's hands down favorite song from a field of many was "Class", a song deliberately omitted from the movie. Because they couldn't figure out how to 'perform' that song. As in 'in Roxie's head'. That's a quote from the filmmakers.
That's an interesting anecdote. Do you think the movie would've been better off with the number? That they should've found a way to incorporate it?
@@moviemadness2536 Absolutely! Hollywood is STILL afraid to market a Musical as a Musical. When campaigns for Wicked finally embraced it, LOOK what happened! No one saw the musical numbers in Chicago the movie as anything different from normal musical presentation, so why not let the BEST song be in there anyway?
@@Voicedude An excellent point there. The best number SHOULD be in a different adaptation no matter what. The studio shouldn't be afraid or ashamed of musicals. I'm even planning on doing a video at some point about how the musical should be more appreciated, but that won't be for a while yet. If you're interested, I'd recommend looking in in about 7 or 8 months. That's my best approximation at the moment.
@@moviemadness2536 Let me know when. I can help share more perspective info...
It’s very interesting that, in the 1920s, things like violence and adultery are considered very entertaining. This musical more or less takes these dissonant perceptions, and views them through a musical lens
That's honestly a great way to look at it. And yet another thing that makes it such a different musical.
I can agree with this, they both feel like they see themselves as Underdogs. Though they both differ as Megamind tries different ways to be recognized even it is self satisfying vs Hal's waiting for something to happen to him rather than achieving anything on his own.
Exactly point there.
Great analysis... I think people definitely get wrapped up in the spectacle and flashiness of the production... and a lot probably don't pay close enough attention to the story and the horrible acts of the characters because they are so likeable... and a lot of times, rooting for villain is just fun... 😁💙
Thank you very much for the compliment. And those aren't bad observations yourself either. 👍
titan*
Tighten is a way it's spelt within the show, is cuz of Megamind's spelling quirks.
@josh-pg1vy I already dedicated a whole other video to that: ua-cam.com/video/7tm6DxC7I4g/v-deo.html
The worst thing Hal ever did was forget to give me kisses before bedtime 😢
Both are good, but my favourite has always been a Bug’s Life.
