If i was mom and the husband just never took my word for the son needing help and pointing out his psycho behavior, I would leave the husband and take daughter with me; let him deal with Kevin alone. Move to another state far away and get restraining order. Dude is dangerous and there is no excuse to fully blame his mother for that sick behavior; killing animals and blinding his sister, killing dad/sister, then spearing his classmates to death…yeah

Being sleep deprived, having a husband who doesn't support her and a medical system that doesn't listen to her, what was she SUPPOSED to do? Hug him and hope for the best? She is human and she was being ignored when she was raising red flags, right up until he snapped and killed people. If murder and destroying one of his sisters eyes, as well as all the other stuff doesn't make him a bad seed, I'm curious what does? Psychopathic, or callous unemotional traits, can be managed with psychotherapy, never reversed. But she went for help through the film and was turned away, so how was she supposed to get access to the help he needed if she was brushed off? The sad reality is that it is practically impossible to change people like Kevin with hugs, love and understanding. They don't respond to it.

According to Ricci, she was sort of a dream girl in this film by which I think she must have meant this was not intended to be a realistic depiction of how a woman would behave, But who knows, it takes all types. Layla was certainly a terrific person. I tell you when I saw this film in 1998 I thought she was the most beautiful woman who ever lived.
As a woman, it reminded me of romance books/movies where the man is absolutely, unrealistically perfect 😉 even when the woman makes mistakes he loves her unconditionally. I just saw Layla as the female version of that:) I think everyone could do with the fantasy of unconditional love and a partner who understands them:) we don’t always feel that way with our real human partners.
