When you listen the next album, I bet you will say; “very good songs and energy but something is missing” and all those power shots, high tempos and same triplets will sound a bit cliche.

I really like Mangini as the drummer for Dream Theater, I even forgot how many times I watched the audition in youtube, in 2011 the first time they held a concert in my country, I was so enthusiastic that when I went to the concert I smiled all the way, at that time they were promoting the album a.d.t.o.e, not many old songs were sung, very satisfied, and the following year they returned, many old songlists were sung and one of them was finally free, as soon as I realized finally free was being sung I ran and tried to get closer to the stage to see more closely when this part of the song was played , and at that moment I realized that I was unlucky because I had missed the Mike Portnoy era, a little disappointed with the way Mangini played this part, until now they have had 3 more concerts in my country and the last one was last year, and although I still really want to saw them play the song metropolis live because they didn't play at the 2 concerts I saw, I'm not interested in coming to their concert again,, now portnoy is back, hopefully I get the chance to see their concert again

As a drummer and Portnoy long time fan, I should say Mangini sound more technical and his backbeats and fills in this song are clearer and harder to play. That said everyone is keen to diffrent playing stiles

I see no reason to question either of them, they are both excellent drummers, each in their own style.

Both are very good within their styles, they are not fighting each other, they are not enemies. Each one respects each other and that's it. When a musician does not respect another it is because they are not really very good people, but in this case they are both very cool people in real life.

Mangini is a superior drummer, Portnoy better composer.

I'd have to give the edge to Portnoy. I'm not even sure I could accurately articulate the reason. Both are highly proficient. There's just more of a flow with Portnoy.

마이크 포트노이 탈퇴후 마이크 맨지니가 영입된 직후 한국팬인 저는 내한공연 한다고 해서 그래도 한국에 와서 공연을 해주는것은 참으로 고마운 일이긴 했지만 너무 신곡위주로 하다보니 마이크포트노이가 했던곡도 몇몇 있긴했지만 너무나도 짧게 줄여 좀 실망스런부분이 좀 많았습니다 마이크 맨지니 물론 뛰어난 세계적 드러머이긴 합니다 다만 밴드 분위기가 마이크 포트노이는 좀 사람들이 연주를 즐기는 분위기 였지만 마이크 맨지니가 들어온 이후로는 다들 터미네이터 같이 기계적인 연주만 하는 다소 삭막해진 분위기 입니다....

Comment comparer deux excellents batteurs qui ont une approche technique différente de batterie certes mais qui excellent dans ce domaine ? The newer Portnoy take shows the Mangini influence. The old one is classic Portnoy. Really boring and really predictable. He does that in almost every song. Over and over again. He even admits to it. Mangini took the band to a level they won't ever return to musically and performance wise. It's ok. Portnoy fans can maybe stop crying about it.

From 1:30 to 1:50 Mike Mangini is totally out of sync with band, his drumming doesnt integrate well with the song. Meanwhile Mike Portnoy's drumming is mighty, absolutely flawless and infinite. There is no comparison between a trained professional and a real musician.
