What's in a Wedding Photographer's kit bag? - Leica Photographer

Check out my Leica Photography equipment that I use daily as a working wedding and editorial photographer based in the UK. Gear mentioned: Leica SL Leica Q Leica M2 Leica Elmarit 24-90SL Leica Summicron 75SL Leica Summilux 50SL 1.4 Voigtlander 35mm 2.5 color skopar Leica Sofort Fuji SP-2 Profoto A1 Profoto B2
I have the APO-Summicron-SL 35 and find that it provides stunning image quality, and it’s relatively small and light. If the AF of the SL version is slow, perhaps the Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 would be a good option.
Beautiful images with your Leica Q. I just brought my first Leica. Already planning to buy the Q3.
Absolute trash! Leica Q1-3 had each different batteries and theyre out of production! Leica is a hog! You spend $4000 on a camera that last as long as its battery. Dumb pest decision. Stop poisoning people. Sony A7 line up from gen3-5 share the same battery. Get a life!
Hi! great kit! can I ask you what do you use to control/trigger the profoto(s)?
Based on my experience with my 28-70mm f/2.8 and my 75-150mm f/3.5 Nikon zoom lenses, I knew that a 75mm focal length prime lens was not long enough for my needs. Therefore, I purchased the Leitz 90mm f/2 for my Leica M6. I have been very pleased with my 90mm.
The first lens manufacturer since Samyang that have balls ! No body need the 8th 50mm prime lens 😅
Canon RF28-70/f2 weighs 1430 grams
Well said
A poor review - to potential buyers ignore the nit picking points. The SL is a great camera - I have two and have never had an issue with either of them. This is NOT a Nikon D3 BUT it's not meant to be. I worked as a press photographer for years and used Nikons but for features the SL is unbeatable and blows the socks of a Nikon.
Bargain no more! here and now, 2024, with the Q3 in backorder, many Leica aspiring owners are looking at a Q or Q2, and they are no longer "cheap". Mind you, they never were, but post covid, even the cheapest commodity US people used to enjoy has gone extinct! I am referring to cars.... either new or used, cars prices have increased to levels where many middle class families have to jump through hoops to own one. SUVs or Trucks are now around the 100k mark, which is completely insane. High interest rates notwithstanding! I wonder if the market is going to crash. In any case, I was in the market for a Q, specifically because of the 24 MP sensor. I don't want anything more than that.
Great video, im looking for a used leica Q and looking forward to own my first Leica.
“Engaged” absolutely agree💯✌️🇦🇺
really appreciate your insight. I've always shot Canon professionally. I have found in certain situations I like using my Leica M cameras (film and digital) and have been thinking about getting one of the SL versions. This video is really helpful. thanks!
I just sold my fuji stuff and am looking for a Q or Q2. I have not decided. I probably will right when I find a near pristine one. Thank you for this video, and for all the comments below, which were great. Did you get the Q2? I expect that you still have the Q. Is what we have heard about the colors true; the image processor designed for 24mp but handling 47mp? Or is the Q2 just the same plus a bit more?
You have a great talent in telling a story and forming a narrative which is engaging and informative. Thank you for creating and sharing.
You can also use Leica-R lenses on the Canon 1 DX 2/3 or 5 DS with the same excellent results!
Oh damn, if that Porsche was the 1989 in Seamist Green, I owned one of those. Anyway... I love the rangefinder "style" because I have a large nose and prefer to use the EVF vs the LCD. I can do that on this camera without smashing my nose against the LCD. As a third camera or second shooter, this camera is ideal for weddings and candid photos. The Q2 has improved ergonomics, weather sealing, and that big sensor. But is also has bad low light performance, the images above ISO 1600 are almost unusable, and those files take up a ton of hard drive space. Even now, the Q (or Q-P) might be the better option.
Thanks for the message Tom! Still love the Q. I've always thought if I lost it, got stolen or broken I'd just get another or a QP rather than by a new Q2/3
My favorite Porsche color of all time. Caught my eye too!
Brad. You are clearly a man of style, taste and sophistication. I see you have some beautiful choice of wrist watches. Cheers of the Tudor BB. Looks gorgeous
Do you think it’s sharper than Leica SL 24-70mm 2.8 ?
No idea as I've not shot with the 24-70 2.8, sorry.
photography newcomer, wanna get my first camera from Q3, now its crazy difficult to get one now, nice video by the way
I prefer M
@@artphototech M is a philosophy of shooting (telemeter) and you can change lenses
I’m personally gonna be buying a Q2 Monochrom in a week after renting one. I believe that the Q2M along with my M10 will be all I’ll need for a while. Until the Q3 Monochrom releases because I do want the better AF, USB charging, tilt screen, higher res EVF, and 60MP Monochrom sensor. I was completely against the idea of a Q series camera until I rented the Q2M. Now I’m completely sold on it and love it to death!
Q 116 is still more than enough for me. Have fun with the new camera!
Nice video, have a Q and added a Fuji X-Pro3 to be more flexible. The Q is a camera which I will not sell, don't need a Q2 or Q3.
Bought the Q2 reporter this week.
Hopefully will have a Q3 this year. Eagerly waiting.
Hi Brad, I enjoyed your video about the Leica Q. Did you purchase a Leica Q2? Did you see the Leica Q3? What are your thoughts on these? Are they enough to make you trade in your Leica Q for either of them? Lovely wedding photos you showed on your video. What photoshop program do you use for going through your photos? I purchased a like new Leica Q at an estate sale in 2020 for close to 5,000 CAD which I guess would be 2,500 pounds sterling. I've been extremely impressed with its simplicity and the quality of the images it generates. I had trouble getting accessories given the estate just had it in its original box an nothing else.
Nice video. Was looking forward to others, including the Q2.
Q2 images are too sharp. They look more like pixels than pictures. Q2 images are crispy--but not even close to what the human eye sees. Q2 is an alternate reality. If we all saw the world thru the eyes of a Leica Q2 we'd all be machines. Q2 is an engineer's camera for engineers on holiday. My Leica QP helps me make natural-looking renditions of the world around me. It "sees" more the way I see. When technology overwhelms content that's not good. In all fairness, most super-populated mega-pixel sensors--from any brand--have the same 'look.' "More is better" at some point becomes a zero sum game.
This video popped up in my suggestions, so I had a go. I completely agree with your review, thank you for the video. I have had this Leica 50mm 1.4 on loan for a day, and was (and still am) amazed by the quality of this lens on all aspects. Just every image gives me a big wow feeling. If I look back at the pictures I took that day, they are still really striking. Instead of this lens, I got the Panasonic Lumix 50mm 1.4 Pro lens, also L mount and also 50mm 1.4. This lens is surprisingly similar to this Leica 50mm 1.4, even in image quality. I think the Lumix's images are 99% similar, and the Lumix 50mm also doesn't suffer from any lens errors, even at f1.4. An amazing buy, you cannot go wrong with that. And yes, the Lumix 1.4 is just a little lighter than the Leica, but not by much. Nothing beats the SL and lens design though, the Lumix S1 looks bulky compared to the SL.
Thanks for sharing. I'm going with the Lumix S line of prime lenses because at the moment I can't justify the price of the Leica lenses. An alternative to that could be adding one Leica "Summicron-SL" at the time to my kit. And I wish Leica had a Summicron-SL 85mm "budget" and a macro alternative.Looks like Lumix S line will have a macro lens in the near future, so I'll stick to the "prime bundle" from Lumix for now.
@@brunof.6452 Thanks for your reply :) Meanwhile, I got hold of the Leica Elmarit-SL 24-90 f2.8-4 lens. That is also a masterpiece for travel photography, as long as you don't need a large aperture. Only at 24mm the lens is not as sharp as it should be, otherwise it is one lens combining 4 primes (28, 35, 50, and 90mm). At those focal lengths, the lens is tack sharp, without any noticable distortions and with smooth bokeh. I got it second hand, otherwise it would have been too expensive. The only real downside to these lenses (also the primes) compared to Nikon, Canon and Sony are the weight and size. That Leica 24-90 weighs more than a kilogram, while (for example) a Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II weighs only 695 grams. Build quality is not really comparable, though.
@@darkknight8139 Try the 24-70mm S Pro, this is the same lens than the 24-90mm, f2.8 constant but 70mm instead of 90mm.
@@GHuser85-rp6xz Thanks for your reply, but the 24-70 is absolutely not the same as the 24-90. The 24-90 is a Leica design (the first ever L mount lens), while the 24-70 is a Leica approved Sigma design. The optical design is almost the same as the Sigma 24-70 2.8. Quality of the 24-70 is also superb, but with completely different rendering characteristics compared to the 24-90.
@@darkknight8139 No, the S Pro is not from Sigma. I speak about the 24-70mm Lumix S Pro. On the other hand, the 24-70mm Sigma DG DN is more or less the same lens than the Leica 24-70mm yes.
It is an old video, but as a SL user (as well as sony and nikon user), I must say: 1. Camera lockups are most likely due to SD cards. I had them on Lexar cards constantly, no issues since i've replaced them. Of course latest fw. 2. Having just one body for professional work is always risky. I never go to work with one camera, even if I'll never use it. For me personally SL being as solid as it gets, which came as surprise to me.
Agree 100%
I've had my q116 from new and have started seeing a softness in the images. Do you have any experience of this. Many thanks. Tony @manxreddotshots
No I've not, I wonder if you've knocked the camera?
This video is solid proof that how a great camera could do. You did really good job and seem like this camera served you so well!
I bought a Q1 in September 2018. I use two Ms professionally and also an S2. But I can’t tell how many times an image from the Q has made it into a project’s master file. I use it for everything personal and wouldn’t sell this fabulous camera for anything. It’s the camera I will never sell.
I think this camera makes more sense as a used bargain in 2023. Around £2000 for this camera makes it a really worth while investment. If you buy a fuji x pro 3 and a lens you’ll be up at the 2k mark. I think this will prove to be a classic.
Yeah. Just a bit more expensive than a fujifilm x100v, But the Leica has so much more to offer.
Thanks for sharing the information
Love my Q!!! It’s great and takes awesome shots!!! The files are great and I shoot raw and jpegs. It just works well in all conditions! I may get a Q2 after the 3 comes out but I have no issues and enjoy taking the q out with an extra battery or memory card that’s it!!! Love it!!!
Enjoyed the video style very much, are the swimmers at Weston? Just bought my first Leica and it's a pristine 'Q' and I love it. It cost me more than £1200!!! but funded by the sale of my old equipment. I love the way the Leica Q looks, feels and shoots, I haven't found anything not to like. The simplicity of the menu is refreshing and it doesn't feel like a 'dated' camera. I use it alongside my Ricoh GR III for mainly street photography.
Your honesty is appreciated, do you know if today they have not corrected the precision of the focus?
Thank you!
Got my QP recently and love it. An addition to my long held M7 and M-E. I plan to use it as a travel camera along w my GR3. If I'm walking a lot then the GR3 goes. If more deliberate then the Leica Q. There is something about the one lens one camera thesis. Been shooting mostly w M-E and 21asph. Love that combination. Don't want or need a Q2. My snaps are just sketches. I'm fine w that. Great vid, thanks much.
Very good in retrospec manner. Thanks
I have never compared the two cameras, however I have read that in the Q files are much naturals and more analogical while in the Q2 the files are more electronic
Brad, Great video . Had a question why I can't sync my SL2 with the SF40 flash? Have no problems getting TTL to work with SL2S and Q2. Setting same all three.
I have owned this lens for awhile but I gave up about the weight it was very heavy for me. Now I use the sigma (i series) small size with good quality (for me) on my Leica SL.
do you have any sort of fine print in your wedding contracts regarding potential failure of an SD card in the single slot?
What happened to you? Not a word in a year!
Hi Bernard, truth be told I've simply been busy working as a photographer not talking about it... I will make another video at some point. It's a lot of effort for no real reward or gain. but perhaps in the new year!
@@bfotosuk Thanks for replying. I've often wondered what motivates 'talking heads' to . . . well . . . talk ! Always thought time would be better spent being out there shooting ! So, I understand and wish you the best.
@@bernardlesperance742 Yeah ultimately I don't want to be a UA-camr so taking photos and work will always come first but the diary is looking really quiet in January!
Surprised you didn't mention its a 28mm lens. I only noticed because that has always been the deal breaker for me with this camera. Just a smidgen too wide. 35-40mm is my sweet spot for street photography . . . which is what I'd use it for. Come on Leica, make a Q with a 35 or 40mm lens. Pleeeease.
Thank you for the review. To pick up on your concluding comment, how does this lens compare with the 50 APO Summicron SL? Is the Summilux SL still relevant? TIA for any insights.
Hi Brad, any tip where to buy or sell used camera gear online? Private to private
I have a 50mm 1.2 GM. If I somehow get the money for a Leica sl2 this is gonna be my first (and maybe only) lens lol
