Spin & Throw Disc Golf
United States
Приєднався 2 січ 2011
Spin and Throw Disc Golf is a method. A cohesive strategy of elements that allows the average player to throw the disc in the same manner as the best modern professionals. It is NOT a series of Golf Digest style "tips". It is a method. In that sense, it is unprecedented in the world of disc golf. These fundamentals have been proven over and over again to be correct using slow motion video of the best pros. And students who use the system almost immediately begin to appear more pro like, and those that stick to the method improve drastically.

Stretch Out the Back of the Shoulder to Reach the Big Circle (SPIN AND THROW)
Переглядів 3,4 тис.3 роки тому
I was teaching a lesson this morning and wanted to show the stretch out from the center of the chest, using the elongation of the shoulder muscle across the back drill. Makes a wonderful routine for players getting away from the "pull across the chest" teaching. Charles did really great!!!

One of my top students throwing little putter anhyzers. note the use of one plane from start to finish. Wide helicopter arc, small close spin with close knees, left side compressing to drive the chest, powered by the trailing leg rotation, finish well past the throw out. The head is barely moving. No Push. No pull. Just Spin and Throw.

Old School... Super Cool Spin and Throw
😂 tough teaching i find it funny
But when u slow down his actual swing while playing he doesn’t do this so I’m confused
Wanted to come back here and say i take back any disagreement i had with your teachings. Currently reimplemented your arm techniques and throw further than i ever have. With pulling i threw 465ft max. Now i cruise at 465ft with plenty left in the tank. Thank you for what you’ve put out here in the community.
It seems to me he’s just putting the right amount of spin on the ball to avoid hitting the draw due to his club face going left. In other words his learned how to play adjust where he strikes the ball since he doesn’t hit it square in the right direction. Either way it works

terrible
Lol he is an old grumpy guy
I took 1 lesson with Mike Austin and won the 1976 masters! Also swinging like this dropped my blood pressure, increased my cardio ebdurance, I lost 20 lbs, and it has made me a much better person. This swing is truly a miracle. Is there any proof to call of these claims from people? Scientific data? Handicap records etc. Im not saying its false just lacking proof.
This is a legitimate question. How is tilting your pelvis healthy? Even further how is tilting your pelvis violently going to be okay on your spine and even your hip sockets? Are there any other examples in nature we're moving a body this way is beneficial or healthy?
@@jacobr4558 it's not. There is a tiny bit of pelvis bump at the start of the swing and there is a tiny bit as the core slides forward. It's funny. Mike didn't swing like he taught. He moved his head.
@@SpinandThrowDiscGolf@SpinandThrowDiscGolf that's not confusing at all. Is there data to support that this motion is healthy/harmful?
Prima facia
Mike did exactly what he says . Don't believe your lying eyes .
His c7 stays stabilized. That's the static point of swing not the head . The head is used for balance just like the butt .
DD has such a great tempo and swing. I especially loved watching him hit his irons.

So for anyone who says he's throwing the club he is definitely not! If you watch his swinging slow motion his Trail wrist is staying extended all the way through impact! The only reason he specifically needs to feel like he's throwing the club is because he turns so fast. In other words if he turns slower he would need to feel like he holds that wrist in extension. But because he turned so fast he can feel like he's throwing it even though his wrist is still staying extended. This is all Optical illusion! This is a very specific feel for him. Most amateurs mistakes come from trying to throw the club at the ball or getting their wrist neutral or even into flexion instead of staying extended. For most amateurs this is terrible advice! This does not solve your swing this actually makes you worse
@@jacobr4558 actually the throwing motion from the top has to be timed with the chest moving forward significantly at the same time. If you get in front of the ball and get your chest over the ball you can throw from the top as hard as you want and still take a divot in front of the ball
@@SpinandThrowDiscGolfto me it's all about radiuses. If you're turning super fast then you can throw super hard! The reason being is because your Trail wrist stays extended. So if you turn fast enough to keep your Trail wrist extended dramatically then yes you can throw as hard as you want because your Trail wrist is going to stay extended. The problem is when he does this without turning you see the wrist go from extension to neutral to flexion. But when he actually swings his Trail wrist is not going to flexion until well after impact! The reason it does not go into flexion until so late is because of the turn the rotational element of his body is keeping his Trail wrist extended. So my point is what he's demonstrating with this throw and where this throat happens are two completely different worlds from reality. He may feel like he's throwing it back here before his Trail hip but in reality that thing is not being thrown until well after impact well after his hands are past his left hip his lead hip. Yet the issue is most amateurs actually do throw the club more toward their Trail hip so they're still doing it completely backwards and misunderstanding it
@@SpinandThrowDiscGolfso what I'm saying is you're not throwing the club head at the ball which is what most amateurs do to create a hit with very weak compression. He is still driving through the ball with his wrist extended and turning significantly with a lot of speed.
@@jacobr4558 The only modification of what you said would be that I don't believe it's turning quickly it is shifting that allows the throw from the top. You can spin out over your right foot and be the worst golfer on the planet, or you can shift significantly over the top of your left foot and throw as hard as you want and compress the crap out of the ball. The turn is actually significantly secondary. The chest has to move 3 to 4 in forward to actually end up with the center line of the chest slightly in front of the ball. That is not a turn
@@SpinandThrowDiscGolf that's definitely true turning from the top would be would definitely be a spin-out I guess my point was just that the Motions are circular. What I mean by that is elliptical orbits. So the club head is orbiting around you and your body based on your hip hinge and your amount of upper body bend the club is moving in a circular pattern orbiting around you. So if you're throwing the club on this circle it's going to be in relation to the rotation of your body was all I was referring to. Yes so there will be some sort of shift of weight but the throwing motion is still a circular sort of motion you're not throwing the club straight is definitely an ark that's what I'm referring to. So there's an arc of your body there's an arc of your hips there's the way you move your feet and the club is orbiting around you so if on that orbit keep your wrist extended or if on that orbit you are throwing your wrist angle out that's the difference between having energy and wasting energy. That is all my point is about. Most amateurs are wasting their energy by the time they get to impact! So the way this sounds is the way most amateurs actually swing by getting rid of their energy from their orbit before they even get to the ball. David Duval 100% does not do this! He is still storing a lot of potential energy in his downswing because he turns so fast and his Trail wrist is staying extended which allows him to get to the ball to unload all that energy and then his wrist goes into neutral and flexion well after impact
I remember Trevino talking about how Arnold Palmer would hit down and compress the ball with that inside swing path so much he would wear out the inside part of his persimmon driver quite often
This is absolutely key to a proper release. David Duval was number one in the world. Why wouldn’t you believe him? 🤷♂️🇨🇦💝🇺🇸🙏
It's because he turns much faster than you do. That's the only reason he needs to feel this way. If you try to release like this and don't turn nearly as fast as him you're going to be Chuck in the club and throwing the ball way left all the time. You will fight a ridiculous draw! The wrist does not work that way in the downswing because he's turning his body which is offsetting that risk going from extension to neutral to flexion. Professional golfers have their wrist Trail wrist extended at impact to compress the ball. They're not flinging the club head at the ball that's the amateur mistake of dumping the lag and losing all the energy of the club. David Duval 100% did not do that
@jacobr4558 Won't draw it really bad like this as long as you stay on top of the plane
Great video, explanations, and concept! Added 50-80’ of distance depending on how well I execute the shot. Still very new to spin and throw, so just to have that much distance added in such a short amount of time is awesome!
Fantastic advice! Had a lesson from Brad today and with in about 45 min to an hour he had me throwing putters into a head wind 300’ PUTTERS👀! His method really works!! And he is the Man! Added 40+ feet to my drives in a couple hours.
Such a cool way to visualize the throw
Rounding
I throw 400ft with bad form (pulling). Maybe if I learn this I get reach 450 😌
One of the many things cameras don't show well but which are actually true. Another is that on the takeaway, the left arm actually moves away from the chest, not pinned to it.
This swing is hard for me to copy. He makes this look effortless. The best golfer in the world prior to injuries.
What a hip turn.
Very good, thanks!
Great video

I have always thrown right. But with so much power. Now it makes alot of sense as to why. Light bulb moments. Thanks again.
Thanks for the break down in a video. Makes sense
For pros to be so confused one must appreciate that Mike defied the much of the PGA approved methods. After 42 years of “conventional” swinging, I converted 6 years ago at age 64 (the age -some say it’s really 59- that’s Mike hit his still standing PGA -and Guinness?- record drive of 515 yards) to the MA Method. For nearly two years, this 5hc had trouble keeping it under 90 and even shot a 102-worst in over 40 years. Then the compound pivot and right arm throw started to overcome the demons of past methods and I was 60 yards longer at 68 than at 62 and as John Marshall says, it’s difficult not to hit it straight and requires little maintenance. At 70 today, my Sunday best carries 250 (60 more than my age average,) my scores are back to mid seventies to low 80’s and all without the wrenching, twisting and other pain causing moves of the proper PGA swing. Mike saw Tiger win his first Masters (97?) and said that he would have physical problems. Mike could hit 350 until his stroke in his mid 70s. Let the world twist the night away. I’m sticking to the levers and compound pivot of the Austin method. Fairways and Greens! PenguinGolf
I do enjoy all these baseless claims. Is there scientific proof that this swing is easier on the body? Have they done Medical studies? Basically this swing to me just sounds like a bunch of promises and smoke and mirrors. Everybody talks about how great this swing is how good they do with it how great they play how easy it is on their body etc. I personally have never seen anyone use this method and if I have they weren't a very accomplished player. I'm not saying there aren't characteristics that work but I don't understand how tilting your pelvis is healthier than loading your legs? My point is Where is the data? It has been long enough now that there should be some data to support these claims.
I learned this from my teacher Dick Raber, a Jim Hardy student. The RIT or right inward throw release. Great demo of it!
Yes but the throw is after impact correct? Or is it because the person turns really fast?
sound??
I didn't think any was required.
Almost make me want to try ball golf. But nah. I think disc golf IS golf for the 21st century.
I just started playing in June, and I struggled with my forehand for 3mos… (220ft) I started to use the two disc finger pivot and within the same week was hitting 300-320 forehands. My RHBH has always been descent (350-400), but I’ve never even thought of using it for my backhand. Gonna go out and try it today.
Flat earth from 10 mins ❤
Yup..if you cast from the very top.. your brain will force ypu to turn.. too easy
I don't know why people find golf entertaining
Most inspiring form video I've ever watched, thanks.
G.O.A.T🐐⛳️
This is money. Even with the "power grip", when you dig deeper you find the pros are applying progressively less pressure with the back fingers so the disc can still SPIN around the around ones.
Ground forces. Trail knee slammed down moves force into lead leg. That move inadvertently starts the rotation but isnt when you should start it. The force applied into the ground comes back equally. At that moment utilize the lead leg and push (jump) against the ground. This starts YOUR rotation of the hips. That “push” or “jump” combined with a pull through (yes PULL through. Eagle and simon both do this) creates the speed and space for the disc to travel. Key word space. Its when you ONLY pull with no ground forces to rotate your lower body do you create injuries.
There is no pull. Simply the appearance of a pull as the disc is being hurled forward into the throw. The same way as if you stop the pitcher as he begins his throw over his head and attached a rope to his hand he would appear to be pulling the rope but he's actually throwing the ball forward,
@@SpinandThrowDiscGolf the only issue is space for the disc to travel through the pocket. Faster rotation of the hips decreases space. Very simular to getting “stuck” in a golf swing. You have to shallow the club before rotating. Unless you help the shallow by dropping your arms down. ei Rory, JT, etc… our version of shallowing would be the pull through. However i think we have to remember there are so many different matchups for techniques. Heimberg seems to be heavily spin and rotate. Holds the pocket the whole throw. Someone like eagle loses the pocket and then slings the arm through. But both trail leg slams downward which cause the lead leg to spring back up and around. It just doesnt make sense to me that the elite throwers wouldnt use another lever for speed (pulling) if they can master the timing that is much harder to do week in week out. Thats the trade off forsure
Perfect explanation, and demonstration of the Mike Austin method
right on. i was taught to pull through 15 years ago and last year i learned that you are supposed to sling the arm. and now when I take a break I find myself pulling though again unintentionally when i play again no matter how much i stand in my living room slinging my arm while watching sling videos. my shoulder is really taking a beating from it cause now i throw 140 meters with a shit form and no space for followthrough because my release point is to the right of me :( gonna really slow it down and go back to slow speed to never pull again
bro keeps schooling me,
I miss David playing well. Maybe someone can send this video to him.
Is the patreon still going?
Look at how fast he clears his hips! Amazing....
Looks like a better version of Dustin Johnson’s swing.
Technique at that speed is exceptional.
What is the value of the Hip Turn when you're hitting from the top??
Throwing the club head is independent
Top half of body rides on hips. Hips EVERYTHING. Especially left. The swivel.
