    Speaking as an engineer, you are missing a whole aspect to your test. What is the penetration difference at 20, 30, 40, and 60 yds. I will tell you, mathematically, the heavier arrow surpasses the lighter arrow at some point. The lighter arrow will slow down faster. You could also go to the extreme and go really light vs heavy. A better test is the spine of the arrow. A more flexible arrow with a poor balance will deflect more at impact. A well tuned bow makes a huge difference. If the back of the arrow is not directly behind the front of the arrow you will experience deflection on impact. Have you ever had an arrow crooked in a target?

    I ordered the limited edition leather bound. I’d ordered the hardback but canceled it to order the limited edition. I feel it is worth it and I don’t mind at all supporting Bobby & his family. I will have all 3 of Bobby’s books and I’ll never let them go. Can’t wait until this book comes in. If I had any advise to new deer hunters I would save my money on deer hunting tools/gimmicks and invest in knowledge. I always remember Bobby’s quote “A used deer trail in the woods may not amount to much, but a heavily traveled deer trail in a tight funnel means everything.” There is so much to take away from his books and the way Mr. Bobby explains it makes so much sense and it clicks. You just have to put the effort in! Thank you Bobby for releasing your final book, and thank you Mr. Joe Miles for giving the avenue to release it!

I’m like oh I got make sure the moon is in the Aquarius phase in the 3rd house and the wind blows south by southwest 3-5. I’ve given up and as soon as you start talking about a new product I’m out. We literally almost drove deer to extinction 80years ago hunting in flannels and jeans. The less bs I gotta sort through the better. When I get older and better at this I’ll try to incorporate this stuff. Until then, set up on a travel corridor with the wind in my face.

    Bowtech wins hands down currently! Pick the one you like…. Easy to tune for anyone… I owned 24 bows last 3 years now own 2 new bowtechs. Love all the bow brands but for me with in home bow press I can do so much with the Deadlock system.

  • @FNR
    @FNR Місяць тому

    No issues with the methodology of the test or the composition of the target. Perfectly sound. The amount of energy that the bow delivers is a function of the stiffness of the limbs, the draw length (which determines how much the limbs are flexed), and the efficiency of the cam system. As none of these factors change with arrow mass, the "muzzle energy" is constant. It is that energy that determines penetration, so we expect "point blank" shots to penetrate the same distance, no matter the mass of the arrow. What slows an arrow down is air drag, and drag force depends on the square of velocity, so a faster, lighter arrow is losing velocity (and energy) faster than a slower, heavier one. But that velocity advantage means it is covering ground faster, and the short time of flight means it has less time to lose energy, so the drag penalty doesn't hurt it at short ranges. There exists a range though, beyond which the light arrow has lost enough velocity (and thus energy) such that it now has less energy than the heavier arrow, and the heavier arrow will start to show a penetration advantage, with the magnitude of that advantage based on the mass delta and the range. The open question is if that range is close-in enough to be of any practical use - especially when one considers the longer time of flight with a slow arrow at long range and the heavily arced trajectory. At practical shooting ranges, with there being no real difference in penetration, the lighter arrows shorter time of flight and flatter trajectory pay big dividends - just as you concluded. Where things get interesting is if the bow is NOT the same in each case, ie the heavy arrow is mated to a higher draw weight bow. Shooting the heavy and light arrows at the same muzzle velocity (but no longer the same muzzle energy) means that the heavy arrow gets the same flat trajectory and short time of flight, but penetrates deeper and over a longer range band - at the cost of more effort to draw the bow. Of course, moving to a heavier bow means that it can shoot the light arrow even faster - so now all we've done is offset the whole curve upwards - although the increased drag with the higher velocity might change the crossover range in a meaningful range. That would make for a fun test to see if it is the case. There is also a range beyond which the arc of the trajectory is so high that gravity starts to play a part in sustaining velocity - but now we are talking "Battle of Hastings" ranges, not "whitetail hunting" ranges. Fun stuff!

    I am having a bit of trouble following you guys in terms of your hunting. It sounds like you are primarily hunting with outfitters. If this is the case, what is the primary element of preparation in that scenario? Is it aligning hunt times with rut phases and weather forecasts or are those hunt times set and you just hunt the week that you have scheduled, no matter the weather? Or do you have some latitude with the outfitters you associate with? Good luck this fall.

Seems like you need to pick your arrow weight based on the KE needed for the animal being hunted. Go as light as uou can to achieve the KE needed for the game being hunted.
