James Hurt This makes me feel very emotional. One day Mom says “A gentleman is visiting us today. If you want to play like anyone…play like him”. She would go on dates and listen to him as a young adult (mind blown). This gentle man came to my childhood home in Memphis with a brim atop his neatly trimmed head, suit and tie, and the ability to transmit his greatness through the piano by performing “Afternoon in Paris” in the left hand while simultaneously performing “All The Things You Are in the Right Hand”. Phineas had the ability to mashup two songs beginning with the letter A and gaze at me the entire time while playing his signature block-chord style while running lines with all five fingers similar to a sax section in a big band. Needless to say I wept every night that summer in awe of how a stick-wielding drummer such as myself could ever measure to the genius of Phineas. He transmitted something to me as he was unable to speak at this due to shock treatment administered to him in the past. That after, after getting an antique upright piano from an architect in our neighborhood, having all my young teen friends help load it into our living room, and having trumpeter Richard Boyington bring over one of the greatest pianist and multi-instrumentalist of the 20th century, my life was forever changed. Sixteen is late by some standards for starting piano yet wvery holiday I went back hone from HBCU Tennesse State I wiuld lock myself in the practice room at Memphis State University overnight to compress the long journey of transitioning from piano to drums. I remain grateful for being in Phineas’ presence just ONCE! Donald Brown has the torch and continues to carry on the tradition through his beautiful pianism, impeccable arrangements, stellar production, and mentoring of students. I love Memphis. I keep it close to heart at all times. 🎵🎶

The man himself!

I first had the pleasure of hearing Phineas Newborn on Oscar Brown's television series, "The Jazz Scene." Donald is the heir apparent, while being a presence in his own right. This performance evokes Newborn's debut appearance on Brown's show in the 60's.

I love this man....I love and admire a lot of great keyboardist.....but he is far and away my favorite....incredible...

stalefish99 she was the best Memphis had to offer. A friend of my family for over 20 years. She past away yesterday. I wish you could have met her because as hard as it is to believe she was a better person than she was a musician. She knew a long time ago that soul has no color. She was my "Brown Sugar" and I was her "Mick". In a cool way because my wife was one of her best friends and introduced us.
