Day 2 of the 2024 and 2025 season. The weather was great and the snow pack has improved.

Snowfall has begun in Hokkaido as usual. Forecasts are calling for snow and all signs are pointing to a normal start to the season. Merry New Year to you and your kin.

The weather was fine and so instead of relaxing and enjoying the coming warm weather of spring, a friend and I decided to risk it all and climb the highest mountain in South Hokkaido. It is by far the most stunning mouintain I have ever climbed. This time we rode into the crater and did the full tour of 羊蹄山 Mt. Yotei. #北海道 #hokkaido #backcountry #バックカントリー #スノーボード

The snow reports from the prevoius two days claimed 10 centimeters on each day. It had snowed a little on this day even in Sapporo. The snow was there, it just had been redistributed by the wind. Bottomless powder.

This was a great day and a great way to wrap up the season, but as I type this I know it is a lie because I have plans to go tomorrow. I don't expect any powder but I want to be hiking in the hills and I don't have work tomorrow that is pressing. The season continues.

Met up with a friend coincidentally on the mountain. We had a couple of runs together and it was absolutely great. This might be the end of the season, but then again I might go up tomorrow too.

The third consecutive day in the same area. Everyday was great, unique in its own way. Perhaps, I overdid it, because the day after this video was taken I felt a bit under the weather … Not too bad and to be honest I was functional, but not enough to return to paradise the following weekend. @patpat267 Why the snowshoes when you have split boards?
My friend uses a splitboard, but the top of the mountain is steep and often icy so maybe that's why he took the shoes. He actually did switch over near the top.

Unfortunately, it was closed for maintenance. The view from the other side at Kyogoku Onsen was not the view I wass hoping for, but it was great nonetheless..

I went up today too, and I felt the end of the season even more. Just being in a snow covered mountain playground is great, even if the snow isn’t ideal.🤙🏼

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but is it risky to snowboard there avalanche wise?
Was wondering the same thing. It looks steep enough that I imagine it would be very risky depending on the conditions
There are definitely some dangerous places on all sides of that mountain. That particular day did not offer ideal snow conditions, but the top of the mountain was good. The lower half was heavy and dangerous. My buddies and I took the safe route down after 1100 meters.
What’s the gear for walking?
MSR snowshoes and poles.

swallowtail is the way.set back in respect to the surface area but centred on the effective edge..maybe need a short fat board in the quiver if the snow is too shallow for swallotails to sink

Hey! Thanks for the great video, any recommendations for Japan specific back country resources? (Ie. Avalanche forecast, weather conditions at the top)
I think using a guide can be a good way to enjoy unfamiliar territory. I can recommend TAKT mountain guides or NOBORIKAESHI club. Japan is a great place. Enjoy your stay here.
