Long time still shooter with thoughts. Total brand agnostic looking to shoot any camera that brings me joy and here to share things I've learned over the last two decades of capturing light and moments.
Nikon ZF reviewed in five minutes - who is this camera for?
I take a tour of my Nikon ZF, showing off the things I like, love, and hate about it. A modern digital hybrid camera designed to look like a 30 year old film camera, this Nikon is a bit of a controversial entry into the Z line of camera bodies. Highly capable and full quirks, it has become my everyday carry camera, my UA-cam talking head camera, my landscape B camera, and so much more. Shown with ArtraLab NoNikkor 35/1.4.

In future videos, as you pursue your 365 challenge, please update us on ways you have set up the camera to work best for you. I'd love to see how you map all your function buttons and top My Menu slots, to deal with the dearth of custom function buttons for general landscapes and your EDC walks. And it would be interesting to hear how you deal with the lack of a joy stick nib for changing the focus point. Do you use back button focus with AE-L/AF-L buttons or do you half press shutter to lock both and re compose? And does having a manual lens affect your focus and recompose method ? Like you, I prefer to keep the LCD screen closed to simulate film camera shooting without chimping,, so I do not use the touch screen for changing the focus point, but i wonder if you use this method at all. Keep your Zf content coming!
You might be sorely disappointed with that video when you learn how little I have tweaked the settings, but it would be an interesting walkthrough nonetheless. So far, the D-Pad is fine for AF point movement, but to my point in the video, if it was where my thumb naturally fell (and where most joysticks are) that would make it all the better. I'll add that video to the list! Thanks for watching, Robert.
I was quite dismissive of it when I first played with it in store (despite having spent a lot of time with an FM2) due to the ergonomics but I fell into a similar perspective as you after biting the bullet on it. It’s genuinely one of my favorite cameras for a variety of reasons, despite some of the drawbacks you listed, ones which I agree with. Ironically though, I was seeking a new camera due to disappointment with the AF system performance of my previous camera but after getting the Nikon in big part due to its fantastic AF, I actually ended up using manual focus Voigtlander lenses for most of my shooting.
@@from.memories it’s nice that it has AF chops AND a really great manual focus assist/confirmation system, a combo that leads to me feeling confident in picking it up over “better” cameras. Still on the hunt for the perfect grip!
What are your thoughts on the Nonikkor? I've heard (disappointingly) that they don't report EXIF data, but other than that most of comments I've read make it out to sound like real nice lenses for the money.
You’re correct, it does not have contacts, but focus peaking works pretty well. I have a full video on it coming soon! It’s an interesting little lens with lots of character.
I love my Zf, but I wish it just had a bit more of a grip on it like the X-T5. It can be such a bear to use with lenses larger than the primes.
I'm still searching for the perfect grip for it. Right now the SmallRig is getting me 90% of what I want and need.
@ the flip side is how good it feels when you pick it up. It’s a wide, heavy thing, but it gives me the same “niiiiice” feeling as when I had a Leica SL and TL2.
I love my Zf too, little heavy but other than that, best camera I ever used and it's just gorgeous!!
@@chrystalferreira yeah, I wish it was a bit lighter too, but at least you KNOW it’s a robust build!
@@scotttuckerphotography yup most definitely built to last!
I wish it had at least 36mp
Non-issue in my real world use. The ZF is my lowest MP camera and paired with good glass I'm still picking it up way more than my 45mp and 100mp cameras.
Tough challenges for 2025! I'll be interested to see how you adapt Nikon custom Picture Controls for your daily JPEGs. For stationary subjects and landscapes, manual focus on Nikon Zf is pretty easy and fun with zoom in, especially with green focus confirmation with Z electric contacts. I wish Nikon would bring the new Z6III Picture controls features in the cloud to the Zf. I"ll enjoy seeing your progress reports.
Yessir, I'm already feeling the pain of the daily photo lol...it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable posting a photo that hasn't been processed "up" to my standards, but that's a big part of this...making the image that comes out closer than ever to what I want to convey. I sure wish, like you, that the new picture controls would come to the ZF. I have 4 custom profiles that I've been using, but there still isn't enough control on the ZF to really dig into them from a light and shadow perspective. Finding I'm leaning towards the X100V more because I prefer the profiles I've made for that camera.
I don’t deal with the PASM switch at all. I stay in Manual all the time. I use AutoISO for my auto exposure. I almost always want the aperture either wide open or around f/8 so I set that the way I want it and then make sure I have the shutter speed I need to get the job done. But sadly, because AutoISO can’t be changed from a button or from the iMenu unless the ISO dial is in C, I’ve basically given up on using the wonderful dials.
@@yophotodude7693 yep, same here.
Same
Cool I like this more than the fujixweekly one this Is really really good
Thank ya. No shade to whoever made the FXW one, but it's a really bad approximation of Gold 200.
Have you tried adapting vintage lenses? I came across my father's old Minolta MD lenses and got a Shoten SR-Z adapter and I've been blown away by the lenses' quality and their incredible affordability, even buying more vintage Minolta lenses than my father's originals! Yes it won't give you the electrical contacts but who cares, I just a custom button for punch in zoom to focus and that works pretty well for me with focus peaking.
Yep, I adapt all sorts of stuff! It’s funny, the magnified view runs more smoothly on the ZF than on my Z9 (megapixel issue probably), so my ZF is my adapted lenses body now.
I got a 50mm f1.7 MDII. wide open its soft and bloomy, but from f2.8 onwards it becomes very sharp. At f/8 it rivals my 40mm f2 prime. Incredible performance from a 40 year old lens. Now Im looking to buy a 135mm f2.8 and a 35-70 f3.5 macro lens.
What model Voigltander 35 lens is it exactly?
The APO Lanthar. The second version just came out with a few improvements but with a larger filter thread. Great used deals on the first version.
@@scotttuckerphotography Appreciate the response man, I saw there were 2 versions out that's why I asked. I gotta do some research on which on is best but your images look amazing with the version 1
@@kevin.itruth6880 they are optically identical, short of the v2 having a marginally closer MFD. can’t go wrong with either!
how is the focus peaking on the ZF for manually focusing?
It’s no different than any other system, not 100% accurate. If you use a chipped lens, focus confirmation is far more reliable than peaking.
Isn't the PASM switch retro in the true sense of Nikon? It's very similar to the FA, F4, Df, Zfc, etc. I can't think of a single Nikon camera with shutter speed dials and all three auto modes that doesn't utilize a PASM switch?
The ZF is designed as a spiritual successor to the FM2, which of course doesn't have PASM. That said, it also does not have auto shutter like the FM3a, a much better camera for that very reason.
@ I mean that’s what they say, but the FA is also the successor to the FE/FM line and the Zf and Df both resemble the FA more than the FE/FM. I’m guessing they just reference the FM as it’s more recognizable from a marketing perspective.
Are those photos straight out of the camera? Or did you tweak them? They are beautiful
Most are just film scans with just cropping done to them!
The Zf is one of the best cameras ever made. The only reason its taking so many people to catch on is due to marketing propaganda from Fuji/Sony shills.
@@richardlucascronley5128 it’s a camera that has its share of oddities but it’s one of the most well rounded cameras for the price for sure.
@@scotttuckerphotography Theres never been a camera without its oddities.. and the issue is a lot of people have, for example, shot nothing but company 'X' in the short time theyve been a photographer. so then when they try something made by company 'Y', and company 'Y''s approach to U.I./Design/Etc. is different.. the company 'X' fans see their own inability to adapt or learn as a fault with the approach by company 'Y'. I used to see this all the time back in the day when Canon and Nikon ruled the world of cameras.. Canon shooters didnt like Nikons approach, Nikon shooters didnt like Canons approach.. The difference is not you have millions of social media influencers, many of which are paid advertisers for specific brands (ahem, sony, fuji) and a lot of their content is designed to be hype machines for their paid brand and against other brands. I Its no coincidence the Zf was so relentlessly attacked by influencers when launced, because its the biggest threat to both Sony (in regards to AF, Lenses, etc) and Fuji (personal camera, portable, retro design, etc). When you looked into those accounts blasting the Zf, and Nikon in general, more often then not they are shills for Fuji or sony. At least thats my observations. That being said i own Fuji, Nikon, Ricoh.. Canon.. russian stuff... I really have no specific brand loyalty. This is just my objective observations. I love my Zf but its not even my favorite camera. that goes to the GR3.
Voigtlander is doing manual lenses with focus confirmation for this camera :) Particulay 35 and 50mm APO Lanthar versions.
Yes, I noted that near the end. I've tried, the 35 APO, 40/1.2, 40/2 Ultron (2 versions), 50 APO, 58, and 65. They are all good in their own ways =)
I'm not even a photographer, your video just popped into my feed (maybe because I'm in a creative dip as well 😅). Gave it a like though because you seem chill and i appreciate your encouragement in general 👍
@@graysonspider11 I’m glad the video found you 😁
5:40 agreed, and so many are mentioning it that they'll have to release a firmware update to 'fix' that. it shouldn't be too difficult. if we're in 'C' on the iso dial, that's auto-iso, soon as you move it to 100 it should go to manual iso 100, etc. 17:30 nah, i would not have taken a Z6mk1 to shoot a wedding, i wouldn't trust it. I trust the ZF though.
@@WizardOfCheese I was very bullish on Nikon dropping a significant firmware of quality of life fixes…now, not so sure. The Expeed 7 cameras are a mess regarding feature parity.
shot a low light wedding on new-years with it, its very capable
Yep, it’s a money maker.
It's great low light
I use the shutter and iso-dial all the time. And PASM is way better then Fuji. To go from aperture priority to shutter priority is done with a quick flipp of the PASM. On Fuji you have to switch to dials to make the change. I just wish more lenses for Zf had aperture ring.
Just about every Z lens has a control ring which can be used for aperture if desired which is nice.
@@scotttuckerphotography Yes, I know. But I really don’t like that solution. I want a proper aperture ring with clicks and numbers for the different apertures. The big advantage, as I see it, when it comes to dedicated dials for ISO and shutter speed, as well as an aperture ring, is that you can make adjustments without looking at the screen/viewfinder.
You can use the middle OK button on the back of the ZF to centre the focus box, one of the very few useful options you can use it for. And if you add the ISO option to the i menu you can use the wheels to change ISO value and change Auto ISO on/off with just a turn of the wheel then half press the shutter and it's done, thats about the quickest way to turn off Auto ISO I've found. It was nice to here your thoughts on the ZF, thanks.
Great tips, thanks for dropping those here and really glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Thanks for stopping by!
afaik, if you set a programmable button for iso, you can toggle auto iso on or off by holding the programmed button and turning the aperture command dial once.
Love this!
@@alexnrs8700 thanks!
Thanks! I definitely will try this one on my x100vi.
@@marleenvandam6931 let me know if you like it!
I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z5, but with the recent price drops the Z6ii is not much more and is appealing also. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z6ii (or Z5), LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup, with similar menus. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session or engagement. No events, sports or wildlife. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 and a Z6ii in the camera store recently and they both felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both really nice. Would you recommend the Z5 or Z6ii as a backup to my Zf? If I get the Z5 I can afford more glass, but maybe the better body is a wiser choice?
@@babyboy1971 Z5 if you have NO interest in video or really low light, it can hold its own! The Z6ii is the overall better camera for sure for those but it’s not a huge gap.

Don't feel bad about changing your mind. Most reviews on UA-cam are created by guys who use a camera for an hour or so anyway. So having some opinions about a camera you've never touched isn't all that bad. And it isn't that unusual. That's why I look for reviews made by professional photographers, preferably who have used the equipment for a while, not just a day or two. In fact, it seems to me, that on UA-cam, brand loyalty or affiliation determines more than experience with the equipment. Especially when a camera is first released, and the insiders rush to get their "content" out when the manufacturer's embargo is lifted, most UA-cam reviews should be taken with a grain of salt. If somebody needs a good review before they buy a camera, it's usually best to wait at least 6 months after a camera is released (if not a year).
@@jonbarnard7186 appreciate this very much! I started this channel to provide what UA-cam seems to be lacking, which are deeply informed conversations based on long term experience. The “I rented this camera for 47 minutes, here’s my review” crowd of “creators” is so frustrating.
Looks like a great everyday carry camera. Hard to find reliable point and shoots at a fair price these days - something im still looking for. Your spatula/mic setup has nice grain 🙂
I've been thinking about picking up a Canon Sure Shot Max to see how it holds up...they are about 15% the cost of the Yashica and have a good lens on them and just about all the same features.
@scotttuckerphotography good shout, the others i've considered are the Konica Big Mini or an Olympus XA. A Contax t2 or Nikon 35ti would be ideal if I can find one though
@ just my personal opinion but the Nikon and Contax are too risky a gamble to take for the money. The Nikon in particular has many known issues that are not repairable.
Just got mine…. I’m a canon shooter…. I can’t wait
Have fun with it! What lenses are you getting for it?
I find that after a few months of use, I am using my Zf instead of my 4x5 field camera. It does stay on a tripod most of the time. Like you, I use Voightlander lenses, along with a Laowa macro lens. I would also love to be able to use F mount lenses straight on the body, but understand why a Z mount is necessary. All in all, I love the camera, and use it mostly as a fully manual camera, and use fully manual lenses.
I sure wish we could get an F adapter that allowed for focus confirmation if nothing else. I know there’s a hack around it adapting F>M and then that stack M to Z but that’s so janky.
Nice review and great images Scott. Consider my interest piqued 😅
Thanks Craig! Film point and shoots are a tough thing to recommend given their potentially limited life span from here, but they sure are fun.
The main thing for me concerning the Zf and Z6iii is that they are missing "Recall Shooting Functions" and "Cycle AF-area" so you can't configure the function buttons the same as the Z8 and Z9. It would be nice to have these on the Zf but really hurts the Z6iii as you can't configure it to work the same as the Z8 and Z9 so you can't rely on muscle memory when using them. For me this is like they are two different systems.
Yeah, I approach the ZF like it's its own thing, but for sure on the Z6iii that's a pain in the butt, especially since it has the same button layout. Nikon is getting into this weird space where most of the cameras do MOST of the same things, but there's something unique missing from each one of them.
@scotttuckerphotography yes I can sort of understand the Zf but the Z6iii is really confusing. The user experience is like a completely different system.
Quite right!

@@Harrysun_1 thanks, glad you enjoyed them!
I learned photography on a 35mm film camera in highschool. I stopped shooting in college as things went digital and I couldn't afford more than a point-and-shoot. This year I decided to pick up photography again and the new digital cameras were a little overwhelming 😅. I saw this an immediately fell in love. A retro camera with familiar controls, look, and feel but with nearly all the tech of a flagship, albeit a midrange sensor. I shoot almost exclusively in manual and I find manual focus to be faster and more accurate than auto focus. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but it takes forever to select my subject. I even found an adapter for my old FD 75-200 zoom from my film days. So far very pleased.
I’ve actually been extremely pleased with the auto focus system in the camera, but more than that I’m enjoying using manual focus lenses for a change! Glad to have the option of both.
I loved the Last Supper. Great catch. And I enjoyed those skies much more than I thought I would when you introduced that theme. Subbed for more.
Hah, glad you liked the skies, I took a bit of a flyer on that but realized I had a lot to choose from this year! Really appreciate the sub.

nice! gotta try this out. my heart wants classic chrome but my head always makes me recover shadows in post. i yearn for sooc freedom.
I really like using DR400 and a bit of extra exposing to the right, since DR400 will control the highlights well. Sometimes really requires an ND midday though.
Pro here! I never shoot outside of manual so the pasm doesn’t bother me. You can set the af lock to 3d tracking that creates a box that locks on what ever you want until you release it. It’s the ONLY af setting I use for 100% of my work. Monochrome memoirs has a good vid that shows you how to set it up. Also, 512 micro sds are $30 and run as fast as the fastest SD’s you can’t get so it’s super economical to have an extra back up that’s cheap to upkeep. I want to mod the dial with a stopper to make the iso stop at 100 when I click it all the way down. Moving iso to my left hand and not worrying about it locking would actually be insanely faster than taking turns with holding iso and bringing down the shutter while firing high stress moments. It ticks all the boxes for me and it’s oh soooo beautiful
Funny that we run our cameras so differently and are both very happy with the results. I've never had a ZF image I couldn't post process well with an ISO 3200 ceiling for auto iso, and all the stress of managing it poofs away =)
@@scotttuckerphotography hey we got the same whip, I’m just using the paddle shifters is all haha. I’ve had this same sensor since the z6 and I can’t leave. I’ve tried the other bodies. It simply renders exactly what I want and you can do so much to the files.
Two things from my point of view as a photographer with 30+ years doing it. First, people need to learn about the auto-iso works (not you) , basically if you set the auto iso as max to 3200, when you move the "C" to 5000 iso means that the auto iso is off, if you do the auto iso range to 64K, of course the dial makes no sense. Second, this is a sub $2K camera... Slap a voiglander and use the manual focus and you have a good camera comparing to $9-$11K offerings... I understand that some rant is needed to get views, but I think all UA-cam should read the WHOLE manual before post anything LOL. Third, if you slap an aperture control lens and go manual you will learn that you only worry about speed. I can't wait to Sony release their version of Nikon ZF to all the playstation fan boys starting to say "Nikon ZF killer", I am not a fan boy, but we need to learn more about the camera before talking about it... It is like people discovering the "Shutter Angle" on Sony and raving about it... Since Lumix has it for almost a decade :) Thanks for the video! Amazing work!
I really appreciate your thoughts and sentiments. The only reason I fired up a channel was because I'm so sick of what "average" youtube content has become...all rage and vinegar from people who either 1) are willfully ignorant about features/concepts or 2) are just rage baiting because that's what sells the best these days. That said, you can't lead every horse to water...I can show a clearly demonstrable bug with AutoISO that is easily replicable by anyone, and people will still deny it. I know the shooting experience of a ZF + CV isn't "Leica-teir" but it shows that you don't need a $10,000+ body + lens to make great content. If you get away from all the brand fanaticism you'll find so many great options out there.
Close yet not something i pursue, great recipe anyways keep it up bro ❤
