Richard Davies - Sitcom Spotlight
Need a grumpy man to mumble in Welsh? Look no further than Britcom favourite Richard Davies.
Possibly best known as Mr. Price is Please Sir!, he went on to be an extremely reliable supporting actor in a litany of sitcoms and worked many times with Andrew Marshall and David Renwick.

Fleabag (Live Show) - British Sitcom History Podcast

Fleabag, the iconic series that defined a generation, was based on a theatrical one-person show that Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and performed a few years before the TV people got involved. In 2019, she did that show again for the benefit of an audience (and cameras) as part of the National Theatre Live project. We watched it! And then inevitably compared it to the TV show.

Rather harsh criticism of a gentle comedy. Why does absolutely everything have to drive an agenda? That is one of the problems with the “entertainment” industry today. Let’s just enjoy a quiet and cosy t.v. show and not wish for more. The world is giving us all too much real time drama these days, not a thing wrong with an escape.

I seem to like this show more than you, but each to their own. To me, the squirrels was a fun, if minor, ITV comedy series from a great writer. The plots were rather lacklustre, like the office environment, but in terms of pure character comedy, it's worth a look. This is a second tier comedy (compared with Rising Damp), because aside from Bernard (Secret Army) Hepton, who's in a (well-played) supporting role, the cast is not that well-known and are generally presented as stereotypes. That said, the three main male office worker characters work really well together as a comedy trio (cleverish, dim, and even dimmer, but each out for himself when the chips are down), and Hepton as their manipulative local boss shows surprising comedic ability. The women are generally shown as much smarter and more practical than the men, even "office dolly" Carol, who's shown more than once to use a combination of feined dimness and her personal attractiveness to maintain a position of control that suits her within the office. I still enjoy it and watch it from time to time. There us a DVD boxset if you can find it. :-)

After his appearance in 'Whoops Apocalypse', I guess Andrew Marshall [Dad, 2point4] and David Renwick [One Foot] shared custody of him after they ended there writing partnership! The 2point4 appearance in 1998 is his last acting role [after playing a different character in two earlier episodes] before retiring, passing away in 2015.

I guess I'm an anomaly. I find this to be proper comfort viewing of the highest order and endlessly rewatchable. And I'm not even a mum or a blue-blooded Conservative! That's in contrast to The Good Life whose appeal is directly related to how much Richard Briers one can tolerate. For me, a little goes a long way. Audrey is endearing despite being terrible, and at times is refreshingly self-aware even if she chooses to ignore when she's wrong, and she at least gets taken down a peg a few times. The plots are breezy, the character actors a delight, and the chemistry between Keith and Bowles is undeniable.

This wasnt a real show....it was a pretend show within the series Extras and designed as a plot for Gervais character Andy Millman. It was just mocking many 1970s sitcoms from the UK and to be fair it was quite funny at times if now considered offensive to some. ❤

Don't forget, the American remake somehow managed to stay on the air for 15 seasons and 375 episodes. Critics were even harsher on that, but it earned Milman a fortune in royalties. He had no direct involvement apart from a brief cameo reprising his Ray Stokes character in one later episode

Less than a year after 'One Foot' ended, Richard Wilson ill-advisedly did another sitcom 'Life as we Know it' for the BBC with 'Waiting for God's' Stephanie Cole as his wife [and written by that show's writer]. Although it did tinker a little [as Wilson's character had children], it came across like a poor man's 'One Foot' and was swiftly forgotten.

I’m playing catch-up so just listened to this on the podcast. I’ve got a couple of facts, apologies if they’re way past their sell by date. In regards to Oscar winners/nominees in sitcoms, both Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson had memorable one episode appearances in Upstart Crow. Also I’m surprised when you mentioned Corrie actor John Savident as being in the Blackadder pilot, you didn’t also mention his reoccurring appearances in Yes, Minister. I’m of an age where I would have said JS was ‘that guy from Yes Minister’. All in all loving the show. All the best 👍

Always loved this spin-off, the first I saw. They genuinely got good performances from the cast, had new material and the location shooting seemed to work very well. Although he was always likable I think Fletcher came across as a touch more decent in the movie, looking out for the likes of Rudge and Godber more than himself.

I kind of wish the project well, even if I have to admit I find the reasons for doing it slightly contradictory - John always had a reputation for wanting to break new ground and do something new, but this sounds like 3 old episodes in 1, even if it's done well.

I was once friends with someone who wanted to be an actor who as long as I knew her never got her equity card. She was always banging on about never wanting to be in a british soap or Hollyoaks because no one from these shows ever achieved anything. Not spoken to her for 5 years and last I heard, no one had heard of her. In general what you say may not ring true in terms of what the life of what an extra is but i can confirm I knew someone who had many of the traits and lack or talent Andy Millman had

What you 2 in this video have to remember. Is that John has an ex wife who he has to pay lots and lots and lots and lots of money to as she is a gold digger. Plus a new wife who is a gold digger. So how does he afford to pay them. Well this is how. First he does a standup tour where the tickets are very expensive. Then he and one of his 2 daughters are writing a musical version of a Fish Called Wander. The his also adapting a stage not a musical version of Life of Brian and he is making a film or is it a TV show not sure where people are look alike for famous movie stars but the real life stars will be playing the lookalikes. Then he has the sequel to Faulty towers to make. The sequel will be set in a hotel in the Caribbean. John playing Basil will be the only actor and only character from the old 70’s version in the show. As Basil finds out he has a daughter he never knew about and goes off to run the hotel with her. So as he needs to keep paying his ex and current gold digger wives then his is an easy way to make a bit of extra cash. Oh and he has a news and debate show on one of the talk news channels on TV. After the successful shows like Fools and Horses and Spamalote being turned into musical the U.K. public is currently on the nostalgia trail. But that said on the other side is I always thought Monty Python and Fawlty Towers were a bit overrated.

7:36 I believe the only time Connie Booth has taken part in a Fawlty Towers retrospective is the 'Gold's 2009 'Fawlty Towers Re-Opened' documentary as otherwise she's noticeably absent and when Cleese announced a [potential] reboot last year she said it was 'news to her'. Maybe Cleese now has the rights to the character while Booth just gets royalties [especially as she stopped acting many years ago]? I remember when the character of Sybil Fawlty appeared in a charity skit it was by 'permission of John Cleese' and no mention of Connie Booth.

Ive always heard that its been said Al Murray thinks Sky never liked the show and they tried to sabotage it especially during series 2 with the editing. They also moved it to Wednesday nights and kept moving timeslot from 10:30 one week then 11 and finally near the end of the series it got moved to 11::30. I think they wanted to do a 3rd series but no network would take it.
