    The crews of the RCNs Corvettes are the true unsung heroes of the Battle of the atlantic. They fought the Uboats with such ferosity and spite that UBoats learned that if a canadian or british corvette was chasing them It was just better to run then to fight back!

    Please stop calling us Loutenants. Yes it is spelled Lieutenant, but it’s pronounced Leftenant. It’s a real disservice to the officers on the Oakville and other ships and elements.

      Hal Lawrence was knocked silly by the muzzle blast, fell into the sea twice, and still managed to capture the sinking U-boat... Not a bad night's wor! And descending into a badly damaged U-boat in the dark (to attempt retrieving code books an the Enigma machine) the boats electrical system was u/s at this point and the Germans were trying to scuttle the boat and over power the two Canadians... I suggest you find a copy of Hal's book and read it. Blows that stupid movie U-151 out of the water.

    Very interesting. The paintings, reconstructions and photos are very interesting. I would be interested in knowing where they came from. John Proudfoot was the brother of Alexander Proudfoot a prominent Oakville citizen.

    • @oakvillehistoricalsociety
      @oakvillehistoricalsociety 8 місяців тому

      Hi James, thanks for your comment. The "paintings/reconstructions" are AI generated so they are only approximations to give a visual representation of what the area might of looked like at the time. The photo's come from various locations some were recently taken (colour) and the others can be found in various historical archives including the Oakville historical Society digital archives oakvillehistory.pastperfectonline.com and others came from a town heritage report you might be interested in www.oakville.ca/getmedia/eeae722c-a62c-4e41-a1a0-3329fe51708a/planning-chl-phase-2-knox.pdf . The information you presented is fascinating. The box contains many precious treasures and I'm sure is full of untold stories. History and heritage hold deep value and meaning. So glad to have found your channel on UA-cam. I have been researching my husbands family history and found that his Great grandfather was on a passenger list travelling to Canada at age 12 (1883)with a lot of other boys of similar age, under British/Bernardo's Home children. His brother was also on a passenger list 1 years later. They came from a large family and were not orphans. Maybe the parents couldn't cope. The grandfather later came back to England having married a Canadian girl ( a place called Caradoc). He came back with a trade as a railway engine driver, settled in Birmingham Warwickshire and had a large family himself. Nobody in his family knew of this. Unless one delves into the ancestry no one ever would. Thanks for some insight into this subject, there is so little out there.

      Parts of Canada did not switch to the right side of the road until the 1920’s and Newfoundland was in 1947. Perhaps there were a mixture of car orientations on the roads at that time.

    Thank you for this lovely tour of one of my favourite parts of downtown Oakville. I spent many days in George’s Square, climbing trees and playing with my friends. One of the old houses was our Doctors office, for Doctor Morley Wilkinson. Walking to Brantwood School in the 1950’s we use to stop and talk with the workers who were on their lunch break at the aluminium pots and pans factory. A little further north it’s one of my favourite houses, the Mariners Home, I love the verandahs, I can imagine sitting on the Verandahs watching the world go by!

    That was a very interesting story of St. Andrew’s church in Oakville. I do have one question to ask, can you tell me what is your source of the log cabin in the video, that it belonged to Charles O’Hara? I have many pictures that it was my great great grandparents log cabin. They married in Trafalgar in 1835, according to St. Augustine’s records. I would like to add the part that the O’Hara’s lived in the cabin earlier to my Family History book. They were George Ludlow and Frances Cruise. Thank you.

    • @oakvillehistoricalsociety
      @oakvillehistoricalsociety 3 роки тому

      Hi Jane, you are correct that is the cabin at the end of Burhamthope the picture is only being used as representative of a log cabin at the approximate time period …. It is not the actual cabin referred to in video as there are no known pictures of it.
