Okay for hanging on a wall, but for sparring or accuracy it's heavily overbuilt. Planks should be 9mm in the centre tapering to 3mm at the edge with the back being flat and the face being curved. The handle should be thinner with the sides taken in so the centre grip slots into the hole like so ---_---. It should be faced with thin rawhide the edging should also be stitched on, not nailed. Doing so can drop quite a bit of weight, down to 2.5kg, while also being quite sturdy due to the rawhide and planks acting as a composite.
Totally agree with you except for one point: the stitching. There are to my knowledge no historical finds that show any evidence of the rawhide edge being stitched. But ... stitching is still more justifiable than nailing. My own 80cm shield goes from 9 to 5mm (plywood). Canvas lined (I know; it should be goat rawhide). Stitched rawhide edge with metal clamps. (Yes, metal clamps were used.) Total weight about 4.8kg.
@@elricthebald While no complete finds have been found (conditions tend to favour preserving either animal or vegetable matter), shields from Dura Europos, Nydam, Gokstad and Trelleborg have perforations around the edges consistent with stitching. Edge clamps are show up although not common enough to be an alternative (or at least a common one) for attaching edging material.
I must be a first class fool, but I would have filed it right after cutting. Anyway, for me it's just a hobby, so I don't need to make it easy on me. 😂🔥
Meanwhile, the ax is beautiful, then I wanted to ask a question but how do you do the procedure at 6:10? like that kind of gray duct tape what's its name? how do you heat the metal to do this? And finally, what metal is the ax?
The axe has already a heat treatment so if you avoid to heat to much while reshaping the edge you shouldn’t affect the heat treatment. The easy way is to cool the piece with water

Wow, amazing work, you definitely motivated me to try and do my own axe. Can I ask if you could explain more on the carving process. What did you taped on the axe? Where did you get it? And what was the electricity method for melting it (not sure if this is what you did). Thank you very much. And are you Bulgarian by any chance?
Hi, sorry for the late response , the engraving process is called “electro etching” . The tape is used to protect the part that you don’t want to be affected , I’ll try to make a video explaining the process but you can find it already on UA-cam
Nice looking axe! Did you use a cricut or similar for the resist and was it normal vinyl? I've dabbled with this as a hobby and have used an old car battery charger and dunked the whole axe in saltwater. It takes about 45 minutes to loose about 1 or 2mm. Your etch seems deeper and more pronounced. Is that because of a higher amperage? So many questions. This is fun stuff. Keep up the good work. You've got another subscriber👍
Hi, sorry for the late response. I used a pc power plant , at 12Volts and approximately 9-10 amps. The hole process took me about 30 min per side of the axe
What an awesome job! Liked and subscribed! So many people on UA-cam try to do this but they rarely get it right. I think you've done an awesome an excellent job!
Aside from the excessive overheating from the angle grinder... Especially taking the angle grinder directly to the toe and heel to reshape the bitting. You can't tell me that didn't mess up the heat treatment. Nor did he actually reprofile the blade. Not that it will keep an edge, because of probably ruining the heat treatment.

The ultimate laxative.
Szkoda ze nie ma opisu co robisz
Can someone answer my question what is he using to stamp that symbol on the axe head is the symbol sorta stencil or what
Hi, it’s called Electro Etching
you lost me with the leather straps I think it would look cooler without
Good craftsmanship, terminator music. Nice content.
It is amazing... I want it too .......
what was that etching process? Be cool if you had a complete list of materials required. I'd love to make my own axe.
Whats the black thing on the leather at the end?

Did you weld two pieces of steel together or did you actually forge the steel?
It's welded. In the vice the axe bends lightly it is soft steel. The artwork is ok but not something I'd go camping with
Hello. I just started doing my axe, and I need some inspiration for the engraving. Do you have some specific places where I can find some nice ones?
Floki axe
What is the center cap made from?
Looks like aluminium.
my biggest regret is not learning this kind of trade

That's Celtic knotwork but still cool
What is the liquid in the bottle?
Hi , wonderfull work , Can i Buy this Beauty ?good work 👍🏻
What type of steel and to what HRC was it treated?

The process is called “electro etching” isn’t a high temperature procedure so the tempered edge is not affected

This might be a dumb question, is there any reason you don't just use a torch? Would it effect any sort of hear treat or something?

This shield is most definitely too thick for anyone to use reasonably in a battle situation
Yeah… I agree, is on the heavy side, it should be 11-15mm . Meanwhile is a pretty hanging piece 😅

Did you put it in oil at 08:33?
Nope, it’s vinegar
Hack job
Too bad only one face of the axe was engraved the way it is. However, awesome job nonetheless!
Both sides were engraved , I just forgot to show them on the editing process , it’s a mirrored design
Do you sell these axes?
Hi, I don’t sell them, I make them just for fun 😅
👏

Amazing work! How long did it take?
Всё замечательно! Лучше, чем шарошкой ( бур-фрезой) торцевые стенки не обработать. Гораздо быстрее, чем рашпилем смыкать...

Music name please ?
What amperage do you use when you used the salt solution??
Hi, 10 Amps, 12 Volts
Sick... I gotta do this
this is easily a 1mil sub channel. excellent work. very awesome to watch
Thank you!
Completely agree!
Can you please explain the process of getting the design on the axe?
Hi, its called "Electro Etching", you have to use a salt solution and a power supply (10 amps, 12 volts)
So what was that, transfer paper ?
Exactly!
Damn thats badass man.
i want 1 how much
Sorry is not for sale, i just do it for fun!
Great job, very cool. May I ask with what current/machine you etch the metal?
Check out this item in my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/listing/1039662356/viking-forged-axe-ragnar-viking-axe
Hi, i was using a pc power supply, 12 volts at aprox. 9-10 amps, i can be done quicker with more amps but i wanted to try with a cheaper solution
What die did u use ?
Boiled the axe for 2 hours on vinegar
What size axe head did you start with? Any links for it please?

Hi, it was vinegar
Great work. Thanks for the info. Subbed fo sho! Cheers
