I'm a high-school teacher of art and design.
Here is where I share the experiments that might be useful to others.
Lately I've been focusing on homemade bioplastic, but anything that can be done by hand at home with simple tools is interesting to me.

Baking Vegan Slippers
In this video you can learn how to make slippers using ingredients that come from algae.
These ingredients, agar and alginate, are food grade, vegan and biodegradable.
The recipes still need a bit of fine tunning, as different ratios of the same ingredients alter the properties of these homemade bioplastics.
About their long term durability... I also don't know, we'll have to wait and see.

Dear, help please. Agar bioplastic waterptoof? 🪻
Hello! I have a question can this recipe create a biodegradable plastic bubble wrap? Or it isn’t possible to create that?
Good question, I thought about that but I can't figure a DIY way to do it...
Спасибо🪻🌺💓
Se puede utilizar pectina de manzana casera?
Good question, I never tried that.
Hello! Can i add rice husk powder to it?
Shure.
Hello! I would like to know if I can use cassava starch for this procedure but if I were to use it, what ingredient I would need to change?
Couldn't this be considered like a pva glue, especially if you stored it in a jar? When I peel my acrylic paint pours off plastic lids and such, it looks really similar, use pva glue as the pouring medium but am very interested in adding paint pigment to pva glue. homemade plastics and pva type glue is very interesting to me. hemp plastic and hops come to mind too.
amazing! thanks for sharing , I´ll love to do it with my students!!
can i dehydrate the gelatin moisture without the machine? can i just leave it out in room temp and leave it hardened?
Yes!
hi! thank you for the video. Do you think pigments or dyes could be added when the potato starch liquid is in the tray? or does the dye and/or pigment have to added while it is cooking?
Good question, I've only tried during cooking, so far.
@@giestas thanks for getting back to me!
Let me know the mould you Used here
hello! i have some questions.. can you suggest any drying techniques to make it quicker? since we don't have much time yet and im worried it would not solidify on time.. can i store it in the oven at 100°c? and also, what quantities would you suggest to make a bag out of this?
question can cassava starch work the same way?
If there's no pectin what will happen?
Hi, is there any way to minimise the bubbles in the bioplastic?
Excellent work. All videos are fantastic. Can you please tell us the measurements of your drying pan?
Is there a way to glue the 2 pieces together? I also used a heat sealer like you but it didn't work, the two pieces couldn't hold together and easily slipped off, and if I used too much heat it would tear the whole wrapper, please explain, please i need your helppp
Difficult to say without seeing the object, but maybe you can try to introduce a bit of humidity (a tiny bit of water) in the parts that you want to fuse together? I remember seeing a comment somewhere suggesting that.
Hiiii how do you dry your bioplastic? Heating or cooling in the fridge? Would be amazing if i get a reply thankyouuu
Hi, check the FAQ in the video description.
Can I use this proportion for cassava starch? Will the result be the same?
I'm also reinforcing banana stem fiber
Cassava starch requires a different recipe: ua-cam.com/video/x8BVDnFWkIg/v-deo.html
Hey there! What an amazing channel you have here! Very inspiring. Recently I already experimented with agar agar to make some bioplastics, but seeing the texture you received by using alginate wants me to try this out as well. Doing some research, I wondered whether you use alginate or sodium alginate?
It's sodium alginate yes.
@@giestas aah thanks for the quick reply!
Hi may i know will it dry within 24 hours???
I really hope to get a reply from you giestas.
Check the FAQ in the video description.
Thank you so much for this video. We are using this method for a biotechnology seminar for high school students. We are having some difficulty in finding all the ingredients, that's why I want to ask you- can we use cornstarch/agar agar as a substitute for pectin?
Good question; I never tried that, I don't know if it'll have the same effect.
Thank you so much for creating such a thorough and straightforward video, it was so helpful! your samples are beautiful as well!
hello there! Love your content so much! I was hoping to see you work with alginate for quite a while and im happy i finally get to see it! Im a textile designer working with alginate to create bio yarns and material for my masters dissertation project. I just wanted to ask about how long it took for these materials to dry, if alginate grew mold? I live in the UK where sunlight barely visits us, and so its hard to dry these materials. Thank you
I don't have much experience with alginate, but from what I can tell it's pretty awesome. I did this in the peak of summer in Portugal so one or two days was enough to dry (depending on the thickness of the layer). So far no mold!
@ That’s amazing! My fabric swatches grew mold pretty quickly, i will try dehydrating them in an oven, thank you so much for your reply! Hope to see more alginate content <333
Wow this video is so inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing this. ❤
That stove is incredible and the glass pot too! Where is it from?
2:48
Love this! What kind of tape is it?
Regular paper tape.
@ Thank you very much!! Going to try this and make flip flops.
can corn starch be used as substitute for pectin?
Good question, I don't know if it has the same effect, I haven't tested that.
Hi, I'm doing this as a college project, but... When waiting for the mixture to solidify, it picked up mold, in what condition does it have to be so that it does not get mold? Also, is there a faster way for it to solidify?
Check the FAQ in the video description.
do you really need to wait for 3 days?? or you can remove it from the molder immediately if the plastic is dried?
Once it's dry you can remove it.
Is that saffron?
Yep!
@ lol that stuff is more expensive then gold. Use turmeric or tea if you’re just using it for colouring
How do you stop your pieces from going mouldy? Mine grew black mold 😢
Check the FAQ in the video description.
Fantástico. Sube más modelos de ojotas que se te ocurran. Me encanta tu canal y las recetas que nos das 😊
Omg! I'm a designer and i was looking for bio degradable product to showcase for a uni subject and i found your channel! The work you do is just incredible. Where did you learn all of that? Whats your academic background, if you mind asking?
Thanks 😀 I studied product design. I'm no specialist, I just google these things.
@giestas that's so cool! I'm currently studying design. Have you ever tried making a solid block with it? I'm wondering if this could be used as a carved block for printing
@mitsuruchan1480 I haven't tried that, but that sounds like a good challenge!
is it safe?
I can't give a scientific answer to that question, but... I'm still alive :)
@giestas im currently working on my school project about edible packaging, it would be very helpful if you have any sources of information about it. thankyou!
well can u tell me why u r adding vinegar while making sheets ?
@Giesta what is the use/purpose of adding Pectin? Can I get reactions for this?
Pectin makes the bioplastic sturdier. You can make the films without it too, but they will be more flimsy and won't be able to handle more weight and will perform poorly in strength test.
Hi during your curing does your bioplastic start to go bad? Mine have been looking moldy
I haven't had problems with mold. But that might be to do with the humidity where you are and the season of the year...
Have you written any papers about your work? It would be amazing to be able to cite them in my research projects! 😮
Nope, no papers :/
What's the name of the container and where can I find it
Check the FAQ in the description.

hi! if the water is 500mL n the glycerine is 5mL then whats a good measurement for the agar/gelatine?? thank youu
Hola! Es maravilloso tu trabajo. Quisieras consultarte sobre las bandejas que utilizas de molde, de que material son? Las has realuzado tu mismo? Muchas gracias y saludos 😊👋🏼
They are just regular silicone moulds.
What are the specific measurements for the bag itself?
is it possible to give it more structure like say I wanted to make a standing origami like shape out of this material? or would you happen to know if I can do that with a cold porcelain or clay like material? any tips would be appreciated.
Yre tooo good
can i use this as a reference for my seaweed bioplastic?
I never tried it, so I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing it'd have to be a completely different recipe.
