Codenames, Cascadia and Ticket to Ride Europe (Europe version has less 'take that' then the US version, so is more family and beginner friendly) are strong additions to this list. Maybe also Forbidden Island. For two players Jaipur and Splendor Duel. I like your nice, tight delivery and concise format with the links to longer content in the notes. Keep up the great work!

This game is high on my list of next games to buy. I have three questions. 1) I'm happy it has a solo mode, but while you mentioned it, you didn't say whether it was good. 2) I'm also wondering what are the best player counts, and does it play well with two. 3) Finally, I'm wondering whether it overlaps too much with Terraforming Mars, Ark Nova and Cascadia which are already in our collection and among our favorites.

This is a fantastic list. We have four of them (Ark Nova, CoB, Lost Ruins, and Wyrmspan), and are among our favorites. But every other game on the list I have researched and considered getting. Other similar games we love are Terraforming Mars and Scythe and a couple of lighter games, Cascadia, Mariposas and Ticket to Ride Europe. I am considering Amazonia next because of the theme, and I think my wife would love the ani-meeples. My only two concerns are: Does it play well with 2 players, and is it too similar to Ark Nova and Cascadia?

It's a great game for more casual gamers. I quite like random effects in games although I know more hard core games hate it.

The mining goal is the hardest one to complete, especially solo! I like that the video points it out, but also that it therefore dips into important startup decisions that most guides don't highlight. You get to see Grandpa's Goals before choosing professions and tools so use that to your advantage when playing! It also points out the ideal of revealing the first 2 community centre bundle requirements asap so you don't potentially miss a seasonal item requirement. Of course you can also replace a bundle you're stuck on, but that will cost you more hearts. Alternatively you can be careful to keep some Spring items before revealing those bundles but inventory space is limited and in general you want to get those bundles revealed asap anyway so you can start satisfying them. One thing I will point out is you select Grandpa's 4 Goals randomly so your suggestion of changing them is mostly the default. What you could say instead is, as an alternative to the rules, perhaps you could remove some goals from a previous game to ensure they'll be varied either at random, or removing specific goals you don't want to come up again so soon.

Just had my first game with my family and really liked it. It’s not AS family friendly as, say, Azul or Kingdomino. The combos and ways of combining the habitats for multiple animals can be a little paralysing for non-gamers, but as “peak complexity” for a family game it is REALLY good. The illustrations really help sell it to a family audience. My wife ended up calling it Azul of the Wild (combining Azul and Spirits of the Wild) and I actually think it’s a good description.

I want to buy ONLY ONE of the 2 Dorf games (Original OR Duel). I don't necessarily want to play it with 2 people but there are little things in the Duel game that we can import with the Original game... so the Duel game is more complete than the Original?... yes? ??!!! In the Original game, the small boxes are unlockable but when you have unlocked all the small boxes, are the pieces and objectives identical to those in the Duel game?!... yes??!! Then, Duel has double the pieces (Red & Blue) that the Original contains so it's twice as good to have Duel instead of the Original. (???) I'm still trying to figure out why it would be better to buy the Original. I've already searched the internet for an answer to my question without really finding it. So thank you for your personal advice.

I love it. Bit of a learning curve on the different characters, but it's a lot of fun. Very cozy game.

I think you forget to take points for the craft markets. You get 1-6 points for completing them in round 1-6. Rules: The player also receives a number of victory points equal to the number of the current round (1 to 6). They have missed the opportunity to print it on the board near the craft markets where it belongs. (like in El Burro)

Gaining points for rooms you cover would be far harder to score, as you have covered those rooms and so can no longer see how many you have filled. And those holes you dislike start to disappear as you get better at the game. One of the possible goals is to fill your entire board. It is difficult but quite possible.

Thank you for this very fair review of Botany. Your summary was excellent and your conclusions are accurate. The game is beautiful, but the gameplay is likely too light, repetitive, luck based and lacking in strategic choices for the gamers that I normally play with. Nonetheless, the game would be interesting to play with gamers who appreciate the artwork, which is stunning.
