You Can't Always Get What You Want (Biggest Buffalo Bills Takeaways)
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran shares all of his biggest takeaways after watching back the game film of the Buffalo Bills heartbreaking 32-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game, failing to beat Kansas City in the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
There's simply no getting around it---the Bills losing a game they lead going into the fourth quarter is a bitter pill to have to swallow. To quote The Rolling Stones, "You can't always get what you want" and Patrick spends time at the beginning talking about how much this game meant to Bills fans all over the world, including a story of his son getting formally introduced to the cult of tortured Buffalo sports fans with this latest crushing loss.
How did it happen? Well, Patrick has plenty of thoughts on several keys factors, beginning with his opinions that the Chiefs coached circles around the Bills staff---pointing out several specific examples.
At the end of the day however, players gotta go and play and Patrick discusses several of them that picked the most inopportune time possible to have horrible games, including Dalton Kincaid, Greg Rousseau, Terrell Bernard and Damar Hamlin.
Of course, it wouldn't be a close Chiefs game without some BS official decisions going their way and Patrick hits on a few of them, stating that while it's not the reason the Bills lost it's fair to say they directly swung the momentum of the game.
That plus a few standouts on film, early feelings on putting the season in perspective and tons more.
Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red’s at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it’s a great place to drink and have a great time.

Josh the choking Fullback. Get a real Quarterback.
Thought your podcast was solid. Then Joe went political. Done here.
I had that moment that your son did in 2020… rest of my life I saw a total of 2 playoff games before that and both times I didn’t have much hope in winning either… because of the drought 2020 was the first year where I had hope for the team and what it could do and it got crushed. Every fan needs that soul crushing initiation as a sports fan. It helps you ride the highs and withstand the lows that comes with sports…
sucks
“Gosh” ( Nepolian dynamite voice ) Allen didn’t see the blitz, didn’t slide the protection and completely missed Shakir wide open out of the backfield without anyone within 10 yards! Come on Gosh!
can't always get what you want this is coming from a vikings fan you lost for 4 SB in a row the vikings lost 4 SB you lost 4 times to the chiefs in the playoffs come on man nothing would make me more happy if the bills would win a superbowl even if the vikes don't keep running it back with same coach your wasting Josh period sometimes i think i take the Bills loses harder than the bills fans
Kingcaid you suck.
Who is the last defensive head coach to win a Super Bowl? Not named Biill B?... Enough said.
If the chiefs call to make a trade don’t pick up that damn phone. Looking towards tomorrow’s episode, look at all the productive NFL players drafted after or slightly before the guys we have picked in the first, second, third round, and beyond. We have drafted alot of mid level and fringe NFL players. Who did we miss drafting? Puka, (later) Laporta, McConkey, Worthy, the list goes on. Our free agent acquisitions have been mid too. Plenty of guys taken by other teams we passed on. Lastly the hubris and arrogance of this coaching staff to keep going to the well and trying things that don’t work, let alone employing a poor game plan or lack of in game adjustment continues to rear its ugly head at every elimination game.
My feelings exactly Pat....still a crushing feeling. I hope Beane can add some defensive players. Beane has a few important players to sign but either via draft or trade some others would help. Bishop has a bright future. Im not going to point fingers. Not my style.
Extremely reasonable take Phil
TIME FOR A NEW H.C. YOU WILL GET THE CHIEFS NEXT YEAR- LET'S GO BUFFALO 🐃 BILLS 👍
You know, if the Eagles parted ways with Andy Reid after all he did there, so can the Bills with McD. And so could the Broncos with Dan Reeves, etc... Change is scary, but change is needed
You go to the AFC Championship have an awesome year....and you want to fire the coach?? I promised I wouldn't read this crap
@@philipgibson9091 have you read my post? Do you know what happened with Andy Reid & the Eagles? And the other coaches I mentioned? Jon Fox was canned by the Broncos after reaching the Super Bowl
Bills fans are loyal ❤❤❤ next year!!🙏🦬🏈❤️💙
That ball was thrown 10 yards behind Kincaid, he’s running to the right at full speed, he stopped on a dime, turned around and dove for that ball ten yards behind him. I doubt that ball was intended for him… it looks like Josh just threw it up to avoid the sack. It’s a miracle that Dalton even got hands on it. If he just keeps running his route, doesn’t turn around and make that miraculous move for the ball.. nobody is blaming him for shit because the ball was nowhere near him. It’s kinda crazy to find out he has two blown out knees and was playing all season on basically stumps. They probably should have just shut him down and put him on IR for the season. Hamlin definitely played like shit against the Chiefs… but If anyone is being honest with themselves, we don’t win that Ravens game without him. He made that open field tackle on Jackson to cause the fumble and he made multiple solo tackles on Henry. He was impressive against Baltimore. I still doubt he’ll be back in Buffalo next year and if he is, he’s a backup. Here’s a serious question for you Pat… how many times do we have to see Allen at the end of a game, with the ball in his hands with a chance to put it away… throw up all over himself? It isn’t just an anecdote anymore, it’s become a pattern. It isn’t a coincidence that he’s 0-6 in overtime games. 9 times out of 10… the Bills only win these close games, if the defense can get a late stop at the end to close it out. It’s almost never Josh putting it away. GREAT QUARTERBACKS do that… they show up in the clutch. I thought Allen was that guy after 13 seconds.. he played elite, clutch, quarterback that day. He has never looked like that guy again since, especially not in the playoffs. EVERYONE who pays close enough attention to this team knew the defense was taking a step back this year with a rookie DC, all new position coaches and a complete reset at safety. This should not of been a surprise to anyone. They were below average to downright bad in every statistical category except takeaways. However, they did their job. They got the critical stops in the biggest moments to keep that inconsistent offense in the game. For the second year in a row Allen has the ball in his hands, down 3 and can’t get it done. It’s a pattern bro.. not an anomaly and as soon as you come to that realization the hurt goes away. As soon as you realize that Allen is awesome, but he’s not a GREAT. He’s not that guy….. the easier it becomes to swallow these losses and not take it so personal. I’ve been able to just flush this shit ever since the Cincinnati game. I realized it then. “Oh shit… he’s just a guy who can make amazing plays but isn’t HIM in the clutch “ That made it so much easier because now I don’t expect things out of this team that he isn’t capable of doing. Put your expectations into proper perspective and you’ll not have your heart broken when he lets you down. Nor will you have to carry the burden of shitting on other players/coaches to exonerate him. That stuff takes a toll on your soul.
I wish they just wouldve taken McConkey instead of Coleman. We needed a separator to replace Diggs. I was excited all day before round 2 of the draft. I thought we were gonna take McConkey & i just didnt see it with the Coleman pick. We needed to get more explosive on offense & that just doesnt happen in structure with Keon & i doubt it ever will.
We in KC just want to thank Josh and the boys for coming out to the annual Buffalo roast at Arrowhead. Enjoy the Super Bowl from the comfort of your sofa as Patty Mahomeboy plays for yet another ring. 😀
As devastated as i am, i have to try to look at the "brightside". I think its safe to say Elam, Douglas, and Hamlin could/should be gone. Upgrade via draft and free agency
Yes, Buffalo Bills forever & Yes, Notre Dame forever...yes, Win or Loss!
Honestly,FYI,my family here n Philippines shall still cheer for Buffalo Bills forever proudly & loudly, & bbbooohhh andyReid, Patrick Mahomes, foxSports News & NFL REFEREES. Let's Go Buffalo!
For that Stones tune to resonate with Bills Mafia it should be titled, You can't EVER get what you want 😡
Sad but true
I agree 100% that James Cook should have had more touches. All year we have played a certain brand of football and decide to change it up for this game. Fear I guess. But I’m proud of our boys. This particular team brought me so much enjoyment this season. I know they wanted it so bad for us and they just came up short. This one hurt a lot.
Thanks for the insight. Apprecaite you watching
Bills changed up what they did with the tush push… instead of going straight ahead Josh Allen was doing this weird jump cut right after the snap sapping his momentum and leverage that is naturally created… makes you think why they did that?
Coleman cannot separate against man coverage & i dont see that changing. He couldn't in college & had the separation in the league this season. He's really good after the catch. He's not going to get himself open so manufacturer some catches for him. They run about 8 WR screens a game. Give Coleman some of them. They rarely used him that way. Other than that he's a big play threat when Josh is able to extend plays & its a scramble drill.
NOW IT IS TIME FOR A NEW H.C./ NEED MORE DEFENSESIVE PLAYERS. LET'S GO BILLS - I AM HEARTBROKEN FROM THIS LOSE
THANK YOU for giving actual insight and not just blame the refs
The bad calls played a role in it, but the Bills shoulda still won.. THank you
@talkingbuffalo bad calls played and roll.. the bills should have won. I take back my comment. Keep on crying about the refs
It's my feeling that Allen got that first down. And I'm a Chief's fan. But.. it was called on the field.. And there's nothing on tape to disprove it.
You can't plan for nerves taking hold in a game like this. It felt like watching 3 of the 4 Super Bowls losses. They came out flat and got smashed in the face. Played scared the rest of the game, including Brady's play calling. Why go away from what was working for most of the season? Let the o-line set a tone and get Cook involved in the short passes. Chasing 2 pt plays made no sense when you can't predict what you'll need that early in the game. Stop the damn tush push if you are getting stopped on it or at least fake it once. Thank you to Mack Hollins for showing up yet again.
Spot on. Play calling was whack.
joe has some good takes for a liberal
All it takes is 1 or 2 blown ref calls to change a game and they did. It doesn’t have to be blatant all game. Just when it counts and they did. Fraudulent ass NFL. I’ll be watching the new Captain America movie and not giving any more $$ or 👀 to the NFL. Do better.
No Super Bowl or any other support.
Looking at the offseason now through my "morning after" glasses, how to draft better in early rounds and fix these inadequacies? We keep picking the wrong guys early on, every year: 2019 Ed Oliver & Cody Ford, 2020 Epenesa, 2021 Rousseau & Basham, 2022 Kaiir Elam, 2023 Dalton Kincaid, 2024 Keon Coleman. I get that hindsight is 20/20, but which one one those picks WOULDN'T you change if given the chance to "do over"? Other teams can have a great draft and rebuild in an offseason. How about we try that this year for a change? Go Bills!
Same for Lamar. Andrew’s dropped the ball. Things happens.
31 years & counting. 31...
Right home with the ravens. Talked so much smack to us. Smh.
The lyrics to Bob Seger's "Beautiful Loser" seem incredibly apropos now. Bleh.
Josh will never win anything. No Super Bowl. No AFC Championship. No MVP
Chiefs fan here. Great podcast! No excuses, and telling it like it is.
Appreciate that.
Joe from Queens is a hack.... reference to Josh... "jerk off before the game. Dude looks what his brain capacity is. 🤡
a real classless effort by bills fans all week. complaining about the refs was just lame and YOU ARE STILL DOING IT. so pathetic. glad this happened; this is why you can't get over the hump. victim crybaby mentality. this guy on the left is such a delusional whiner. guy on the right is at least in reality.
Bills did benefit from that bad Pi call against the Ravens cornerback …which should have been an Offensive Pi because receiver pushed off.
It's funny nobody is bringing up the clearly horrid Def offsides on the Bills that KC was called for the false start, that even Romo commented on... because that put KC in 3rd and long and forced the punt that the Bills 4th down close spot set up. It's sad when football fans only want to cherry pick the Refs. At least be honest, the refs all kinda suck, and have for several decades... because they are part time. In the end the Bills had the ball with 3 minutes to play and did not get it done... that was the real reason Josh Allen is going to the Pro Bowl or Cancun.
At least it wasn’t wide right…
Feeling very NUMB, same old, same old every season!
iT SUCKS
Now you know what it felt like to be a Chiefs fan from 1988 until 2018. Playoffs and out most years. Nothing but heartbreak for most of my life. Close only once with Joe Montana. Andy Reid + Patrick Mahomes changed everything. I have no hate towards the Bills and nothing but respect for Josh Allen and the organization. The Bengals and Raiders on the other hand…
@ I had to also endure 4 Superbowl losses. Should have won 1990, easily the best team that year!
@@jlsajulan The Chiefs went from 1972 to 1985 without making the playoffs. They drafted Todd Blackledge over Jim Kelly and Dan Marino in 1983. They had to deal with John Elway, and lastly, 50 years without going to the Super Bowl.
This loss is devastating. Way worse than last year. I’m stunned we lost. Every one said we would win. I can’t believe it’s over. Why???
Sleepwalk to start games caught up to them.
Bills suck again.
Pat you are right, besides everything else. the D still could not make a stop to get the ball back at the very end . Chiefs made chunk plays
They NEVER stop KC in the playoffs, ever.
Defense is the only reason the Bills were in this game. The turnover in the first half is the only reason the Bills weren’t down 2 scores at half. Then they forced 2 punts and held KC to a FG inside the 10 yard line, to give Allen and the offense a chance to win the game. Allen shit the bed on that last drive. He choked in the clutch again. That’s not coaching… that’s Allen shitting the bed. The throw to shakier was shit, the throw to a WIDE OPEN Samuels with 30 yards of space in front of him was at his feet… and then on 4th down and 5… Allen rolls to his right… right into the blitz and throws a prayer to Kincaid, when he has a wide open SHAKIER on the wheel route to his left. Allen was shit tonight… he made some good plays, but he put the team in a hole to start the game and shit the bed at the end. PS… throw the tush push in the trash … when it mattered most Allen couldn’t get 1 fucking yard. Despicable
Too harsh on Josh.. He certainly deserves some criticism but you're making it sound like he's the primary reason they lost.. Come on now.
@ He’s the leader of the team… the most talented and important player on the roster. When I saw him on the sideline before the game started he looked afraid. You could see it in his face, he was shook. Meanwhile Pat is bouncing around, chewing on his stupid mouthguard and chumming it up with his teammates… calm, cool, collected. Ice in his veins. I was not surprised in the slightest that Allen came out on that first drive and threw two balls right to the defense. It was a blessing from the football Gods that one of them wasn’t caught. Josh had that same look in the 4th quarter before taking the field. He didn’t even celebrate when the defense came up big and forced the FG to give him a chance to win it. He looked depressed. The body language was awful. The guy needs a psychiatrist or something. Maybe he should head down to Mexico with Aaron Rogers in the offseason to get some iawaska or something. Yea it wasn’t ALL bad. Allen made some INCREDIBLE throws. Throws that ONLY he could make. The guy is a phenomenon… it just sucks that he’s also a mental basket case
@mazzvidz I'm a lifelong Missouri resident and have been watching my Chiefs since 89-90. Allen plays good to great every time. Of course he isn't perfect, nobody including Pat is either. Pat is the best...but only a little of this is on Josh IMO. Play calling was by far Buffalo's biggest downfall.
Kincaid was not a tough catch. Bills D just is to soft
The Kincaid catch was a prayer floating ball up in the lights, and Kincaid has McDuffiee close and he had to alter his route.
calling the same exact tush push over and over was terrible play calling. Kincaid drop also cost the Bills the game . he is not clutch.
Give Kincaid a break, it was a floating prayer ball up in the lights he had to bend back for out of his route.
It was 90% play calling from what I saw.
Thank the Ravens Mark Andrew drop catches & fumble for the Bill making it to the AFC championship
GGs. Tough game. Chiefs were better in the clutch though. But if we want to do hypotheticals the Bills were lucky to not have lost by 10+. 4 fumbles, didn’t lose one. 2 ducks that the Chiefs didn’t pick off either. Mahomes played better too. Check this out though… Xavier Worthy ♦️ 8 touches ♦️ 101 total yards ♦️ 1 TD Keon Coleman… 1 for 12 🤭
Oh cringe you showed the beer
