Where ever He leads, I’ll go - B. B. McKinney (1936)
Stanza 1. “Take up thy cross and follow Me,” I heard my Master say;
“I gave My life to ransom thee, surrender your all today.”
Refrain:
Wherever He leads I’ll go. Wherever He leads I’ll go.
I’ll follow my Christ who loves me so, wherever He leads I’ll go.
2. He drew me closer to His side, I sought His will to know,
and in that will I now abide, wherever He leads I’ll go. (Refrain)
3. It may be thro’ the shadows dim, or o’er the stormy sea;
I take my cross and follow Him, wherever He leadeth me. (Refrain)
4. My heart, my life, my all I bring to Christ who loves me so;
He is my Master, Lord, and King… wherever He leads I’ll go. (Refrain)

I heard the bells on Christmas Day - new hymn tune “Farley”
Переглядів 124Рік тому
I remember my grandmother showing me this carol out of an old hymnal when I was very young, sitting at her kitchen table beside her turquoise stove. She explained it had been written when the US was torn apart by civil war. Of course, what does that mean to a little kid? The past few years however the US seems to be becoming more and more divided, and I’ve thought a lot about this text - though...

Text by Lesbia Scott, 1929 Tune: “Grand Isle” by the Rev. Mr. John Henry Hopkins III, 1940 “1 I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, God helping, to be one too. 2 Th...

Baroque Ukulele Arr. - Españoleta - Gaspar Sanz, 1674 (on a rainy day)
Переглядів 3163 роки тому
It’s rained so much this year, it’s hard to work around it. But I think the rain actually suits itself to some baroque guitar music. I’m not a guitarist, but I’ve been fiddling with the uke a bit. This is based on the arrangement from Rob MacKillop’s book. I altered some of his arrangement. The instrument is a Pequeño model from Ohana Ukes. It is meant to invoke the late-19th century ukuleles o...

Michelsonne Toy Piano - Minuets in G major and g minor by Christian Petzold (attrib. Bach)

Two famous minuets learned by many of us as children. For a long time attributed to Bach because they were collected in a music notebook for his wife, they were actually written by Christian Petzold (1677-1733). I plan to start recording several children’s pieces on this instrument, a very rare 4 octave (49 note) Michelsonne toy piano, made in France in the 1960s. Hands down, the best toy piano...

New (to me) Michelsonne Toy Piano just arrived from France. This is the super rare 4 octave (49 note) model. The design was developed by Victor Michelsonne (1904-1983) in the late 1930s, and they were available with one, two, three, or four octave, both upright and grand models. The keyboards of the upright models fold up into the instrument for transport and protection. The company built toy p...

    From all I've read, this video series is as close to the real deal in so far as harpsichord making is concerned. I think this is from the Williamsburg harpsichord shop from the late 70s-early 80s. If you watch most of this, you could very much build your own harpsichord/spinet. Thanks!

    Thank you for your excellent review which I enjoyed listening to very much. Your hypothesis on an Egyptian revival as inspiration for this snuff may well be true. However, as made by Wilsons of Sharrow it is a relatively new edition which I hope will not disappoint you. It first appeared in 1984, introduced by the then managing director Mark Chaytor as part of what was called the Grand Sharrow Range. The eight new snuffs included the one reviewed and with the exception of Gold Label were more expensive than others on the list. Gold Label, by the way, is Sharrow’s highest grade snuff, still made with Kentucky leaf and (unlike S.P.) remains unchanged since the 18th century. In this respect it is probably now unique - a genuine survivor from a bygone age. But the name Grand Cairo for snuff is (as you reasoned) much older than 1984 and I have the complete recipe for an early Regency period version (c.1811) by a major London House which would have been significantly different from Wilson’s version. Without going into too much detail it is a mixture of two rappees - three parts of Polhill’s Gross to one part of Martinique (both using Dutch tobacco but liquored differently when laying down) and the final mixture flavoured with oil of Rhodium. The grain of the finished product would have been extra-coarse.

    • @harpsichordkid
      @harpsichordkid Рік тому

      Thanks! For a while I called my channel “Adventures in ADD” haha. In terms of keeping everything historically accurate, I’m not. For instance, the instrument in this video is actually based on a Victorian “harp-lute”, but I was lucky enough to find it at Goodwill, and it’s plausible that similar instruments existed in the medieval era. We do the best we can. And I’m by no means an expert on medieval performance practice, but I’ve listened to a lot of professionals and try to emulate what I like. And because I’m doing this for fun, that allows me to be a little less concerned about historical accuracy - but I do what I can on my budget. And hopefully that encourages others to take up some of these obscure interests. Regarding tuning, I use an app called “Cleartune” that has various temperaments.

    Very nice, James, and in the Sacred Harp tradition to boot! I've always felt the Waltham tune to be excessively saccharine and doesn't pair at all with vv3-4. Between the 2d and 3d verses are four more that tend to be omitted, yet are part of Longfellow's original poem, for which Waltham would be IMO a horrid tune to use; I've numbered them here per Longfellow's original poem: 3. Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 4. Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 5. It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 6. And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" 7. Then pealed the bells, &c.
