Baking Finnish pulla
My 89 year old mom has been baking pulla for 68 years.
She bakes batches of seven loaves 4 to 6 times a year.
Here's how she does it.
22 July 2022 UPDATE: Mom will be 94 in a week and yes, she is still baking pulla regularly.

What a gem your mom is! She's an absolute doll. I wish I had her as my neighbor. I would love to learn authentic Finnish recipes from her! Those pullas are absolutely something you would find in a lovely bakery. Amazing.

I lived in Finland for about a year. I saw Pulla as a round bun, some hundred time, as a loaf maybe once. It's not that the loaf is bad, but out of date.

Thanks for the video. Reminded me so much of my childhood watching my grandmother in the kitchen. She used to make this then my mom. I learned from both and have been making for more than 45 years. Recipe is the same as shown here so was nice to see. It is always a treasured treat throughout the years and many loaves are given away as family, friends and neighbors ask when the next batch is coming. I took home economics in gr. 7 and made this for a contest and won. My teacher said - Dave if you ever open a bakery Iet me know. I had great teachers!

This video reminds me from my childhood, when I came from school and my mom had been baking. In cold winter days when you were having cold, stepped in and could smell the just baked pulla. That feeling, it was memorable moment. Thanks for this video.

Gosh.....listening to this sweet lady, makes me miss my grandmother, who, in 1927, immigrated to America from Helsinki, Finland. She was 10 yrs old. Grandma constantly baked, everyday. I can still smell the wonderful aroma of her Finnish Cardamom Bread and her Finnish Coffee cake. Grandma still spoke the Finn language, learned English. I miss her smile, laughter, and the accent of her voice. Wonderful, intelligent, honorable people are from Finland! And I am proud to be half Finn.....my daddy was born outside of Dublin, Ireland...lol. God bless this beautiful lady! Thank you for sharing this lovely lady's recipe, personality, and her home!

My son who is now thirty five asked me how to make pulla. He fondly remembers how his Mummu used to bake it, most often for special occasions. Thankyou so much for posting this video, I see how your Mom handles the dough... lovingly and expertly. My Mom braided her dough the same way using four lengths and I could never figure out how she did that, but now, thanks to you and your Mom I'm ready to tackle the braiding !

My grandma immigrated from Helsinki, Finland in 1927, when she was 10 yrs old. She used to make her Finnish Cardamom Sweet Bread, and I could taste the delicious smell in the air. Gosh...I miss her. Value your grandma, hold her close. My grandma passed in 2010, at almost 93 yrs old. She still baked, till the day she died....and rode her bicycle....no lie. Finn people are so intelligent, honorable, wonderful people. I am proud to be a Finn, also!

@@DianeHasHopeInChrist back where I’m from in the UP of Michigan my grandpa came over with my great grandpa Jacob when he was a kid they came by boat. Back home we call it Nisu. I made a loaf this past weekend but next weekend I’m gonna put quite a bit more cardamom in mine. I also grew up eating mine that had some very thick coffee and sugar spread across the time as it was pulled out the oven. I’m a young man (30) and take pride in continually cooking my families recipes

Kiitos! What a delightful video! I enjoyed watching your Mom's skilled hands at work; she is very good! I expected her to cut the rope in thirds, but she kept on going and showed us how to braid with four strands. Beautiful! What else does she bake?
