    Making test blocks are key particularly when you have seamed interior blocks (such as a 9 patch center on a 9 patch block). You will find out very quickly if you needed a scant! I decided to use up some scraps and make 3.5" finished LeMoyne Stars. Now, when I make the bigger stars, I use a scant for the diamond seams and a full for the insets (to preserve points). Well, my little blocks were finishing too large using this method. I needed full 1/4" for all seams. I make a block, staple a piece of paper to it and put my component measures and maker's notes on it for quick reference. Great video.

    • @FrancesQuilts
      @FrancesQuilts Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting!! I have found that my blocks end up being the right size when I use my tape method. I love that I don't have to worry about it anymore!!!

    • @notesfromleisa-land
      @notesfromleisa-land Місяць тому

      @@FrancesQuilts I use my #57 foot (gated foot) on my Bernina. It doesn't bend or toe out like many of them and rides over seams easily. If I need a scant, I simply go one click to the right. If I need an accurate quarter, it stays in the middle. Test block determines which I need to use when to get accurate block size for inter block seaming or intra block fitting. It has a straight stitch plate but is not a plate sensor...so I can move the needle --to include using a zig zag which is a bonehead move! Love your vids. Keep them coming.

    I will clip a seam to get a portion of it to go the way that I need. It's done in garments all the time, and sometimes it is a necessity to reduce bulk in seam confluence in blocks. (I only press open when forced to!)

    I've used my design wall for basting. I use fusible web v. spray (having tried everything--but never pins). I do my ironing (first) and fusing (second)right on the design wall. It is more secure than basting spray (and without the ick). I had my husband make me a step up box in front of my design wall. I can shimmy right and left, and only have a small step. Nothing gives you a better line of site and uses gravity as your friend than basting on your design wall. Your quilt is beautiful.

    I think we get kind of stuck in a mode where we are so determined to plug on through. I do this often and I end up regretting my stubbornness. The quilt is really lovely particularly for a scrap quilt! I usually make fairly large quilts and they never fully fit in my design wall once constructed. But this is fantastic for those who can utilize this method! I hated crawling in the concrete so much I nagged my husband into buying me a longarm machine. Now I baste my quilts on the frame. It is so much less hassle. But we all make do with what we have. Blessings to you. Thank you for sharing.

I have also treated my fabric with "Bubble Jet Set", ironed it to freezer paper and printed it that way. If I am doing a LOT of photos at one time, I will use Bubble Jet. Some people have printed directly onto the untreated fabric but I worry that it might wash out. Let me know if I can help further!!

    I 100% agree with the grippy comment. I have Amanda Murphys baptist fans rulers. Even though they have a coating that keeps them from slipping I added Grippy and it made a huge difference. I tend to do curves from side to side vs top to bottom. That allows me to keep fingers from both hands on the ruler to have better control.

    • @FrancesQuilts

    I tend to push the ruler too hard against the foot and have a similar problem of pushing the ruler out of position. I have to concentrate on pressing down on the ruler, not pressing against the foot. I recently tried using Grippy spray on my ruler which works great for me and stops the ruler from sliding on the fabric. The Grippy works better for me than any stick on tapes or dots I have tried.

    This type of improvisational quilting works well on the digitally printed Hoffman panels (Dream Bigs). I've had a ton of fun with those!

      I can imagine that it would be great on those panels. I have seen so many quilter's who struggled with those because they felt that it had to be completely planned before they started!

      I hope you do Terri!! looking at it as a grid where you are just filling in the "squares" makes it so much more manageable

    Does the marker dry quickly? No smearing problem?

    Thank you so much for this challenge! I just happen to have a top with 12 sawtooth stars with sashing! I was really struggling to figure out how to quilt it.

    I'm so glad I found your series! I recently started teaching myself to quilt my own blocks/quilts and just sewed up a star-like block to practice and wondered, how should I quilt this? You've given me so many ideas! My head is swimming with them now! I am anxious to see the next in the series. Thanks so much for a great set of videos!
