Electric Motors on Hang gliders Why Do Girls Prefer Hang glider Pilots REMASTERED - 4k
Remastered for easier viewing :)
Hang gliding in Western Australia with Custom Electric motors placed in a new and Unique Position and that we think work better than anything created before because of the great balance of drag and thrust in this configuration.

For people interested in learning to fly in Western Australia check out: hangglidingwa.com.au
Our main thoughts on the advantages of using these motors is:
1) On very light days we can still fly and well out perform the local para-glider pilots, which is a lot of fun :) We can also fly sites when the wind is light and too far "off" for sustained lift.
2) For jumping from one lift source to the next on the coast. For example we are now able to fly along the coast for many miles using, buildings sand dunes and cliffs for lift and jump between them with ease and safety, whereas in the past we could only do that in a high performance glider with lots of VB on. This was only for the most advanced pilots and was sill very scary.
3)One of our favorite things is getting on to a hill by starting in front on a small sand-dune or low lumpy bit and climbing to the top using lift and motors. A lot of hills are not accessible as you know, and starting off on a low primary dune or hill is a great way to avoid a long difficult hike carrying a glider.
Throttle control: The throttle is on the index finger and works really naturally. It also has a battery level indicator and can be seen on the video "Why do girls prefer hang-glider pilots"
Battery position: We have one model where the batteries are contained in the housing (Pod) which has a safety disconnect. The others have separate batteries that we carry on our chest for easy access and disconnect in case there is a problem. For low coastal flying, they can released from the parachute pouch.
Battery time: varies with use, and size, of battery pack and motor configuration. As a guide though, with our smaller helper motors, we can use them intermittently for hours or, with the 12Ahr pack - full revs for 12min. It really just depends on how many batteries you want to carry around. We get a lot of fun out of a small light pack and that is usually our preference. We often have another charged pack on standby but rarely end up using it.
Noise: We have uploaded a video without music so you can hear how loud the motors are. They are not silent because of the prop noise but using them at low speed as an assist is quiet enough that people watching don't realize we are using motors.
Selling the motors. Yes we have considered that. Unfortunately, we are better inventor / builders than we are business-people. We are also concerned about liability, insurance and warranty issues.
At the moment we are not building any motors due to other commitments. Happy flying!
DETAILS
Here are some basic details about the motors:
Referring here, to the "helper" motors like the "Carbon Boy" as shown in the videos.
We have tried many different motor/speedie/battery combinations and still try different combos. We have had all of the above fail at times and still don't have a definite list of which ones are the best
Prop:
23inch / 12 pitch
Motors:
Using Out-runner model aircraft motors
2,600W
Around 140kV - 160 kV
Around 60A
Batteries:
Two lots of 6s cells connected in series
Speed controller (Speedie):
We go twice the amp rating for reliability and think that is about right. So 120A speedie
The 120A "Yipe" seems to work reliably as an entry level unit.
Speed control is via a modified servo tester wired onto the speedie.
Weight:
1.7kg plus batteries (2x10,000A 6s) 2.7kg = 4.4kg.
gives 10 min at full throttle or hours of fun at low revs/used intermittently.
PLEASE NOTE: that we don't have the time and resources to help someone through a motor building project at the moment. We are already over committed with jobs and family.
Good luck and fly safe!
About the Plettenburg Predator motors:
Predator motor rated at 12kw and weighing about 1kg - made in Germany and is pretty expensive the batteries are LiPo running at 44V the Speedie is a Schutze future 160A

For this suck out to deck addition one more "tee" was required and joined into the hose between the tank outlet and the pump. After the tee is a new ball valve to isolate the system when not pumping out.

Love what you’re doing. I’ve seen the early gas king post mounted versions in action in the middle 70’s. Two of my HG friends where experimenting in New Hampshire- USA and two separate occasions managed to forward tumble during a full power stall. Both survived luckily by large bushes below. Granted today’s wings are far more stable then those early wings Still we have not heard what your units are putting out for thrust. Can you maintain or climb in still air conditions??? My old Mosquito was putt out just over 100 lbs thrust and I tried a friend’s direct drive electric motor installed on a harness and putting out about 60 lbs for a slow climb.

Hard to say since it is just a helper motor to increase our flying envelope but when it has been barley flyable (light winds) we have gotten to 100ft instead of just scraping our wings along the ridge.

  • @simonhughes-king
    @simonhughes-king Місяць тому

There is a very good reason that the successful motor modifications for HG are attached to the pilot. It's to do with pitch stability in turbulence. When under power, you get big pitch down moments when the pilot goes light on the hang strap. There have been a few attempts at airframe attached motors. Most have either killed or nearly killed their inventors.

    • @cwallen32
      @cwallen32 Місяць тому

Completely disagree. You can successfully mount motors to a glider. However, this design will have issues if you try to flat-land launch it with no ridge lift. The thrust line is too high compared to the center of mass, however, with the low power motors and some ridge lift I don't see an issue with the design just limited in application and wouldn't increase motor size much. My preference is an ehelp for low performance gliders and a twin keel mount for high performance (still testing but getting good results and 400fpm up). Also if you're referring to the Soar Master I read one of the best accident reports out of the UK on the unit and have spoken with multiple pilots who actually flew them including Mark Stucky. My takeaway is people didn't understand the operating limitations, didn't have proper training, and were flying them on very dated equipment by today's standards.
