@@thedoubledropdown sorry it took so long to reply! i have a kickstarter for my next game, which is inspired by zelda and the mana series :) no pressure, though. also, the death sound in the game was sampled from astro boy 1980! (episode 47)

It works in every type of game, just some generes give you different challenges than others to make it work and do what you want. I've help people make it work on top down. It's main (if not only) limitation is having to go through the idle frame for each change. About having to put each direction on a different sheet, you can order and create you sheets however you want, but I recommend having the less sheets possible. You can separate the 4 directions, or have all of them or 2 of them in one sheet. You can change sheets for attacks and special actions only, or cutscenes, or for whatever you want. There is also no need to do it on button presses, you cna do it on interaction, on a trigger, on a platform state, etc. In fact the "challenge" and the hard part is finding out how to implement it into your game. The sheetchange itself it's pretty simple, straightforward and will always work (on a vacuum) .
