Приєднався 15 січ 2008
Pianist Paul Barnes specializes in contemporary American music, Liszt, and works inspired by Byzantine chant. Barnes has worked closely with Philip Glass and commissioned the Piano Quintet "Annunciation" and the Second Piano Concerto "After Lewis and Clark." Barnes is Marguerite Scribante Professor of Piano at the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also serves as head chanter at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
Paul Barnes LMTA lecture on beauty and embracing sacramental reality
I gave this lecture at the LMTA meeting on August 30, 2024.
Selected quotes from the lecture:
“The question of meaning in life is perhaps the most practical question of all, which I think should be even more apparent in the wake of the modern epidemic of depression and anxiety, to say nothing of suicides or shootings. There is a vast, complicated universe out there; what is its meaning? Whatever your answer, everything else about reality-science, history, literature, economics-is bound up in it. That’s why it’s correct to say that the central issue with which religion is concerned is the nature of ultimate reality.”
- Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age by Zachary Porcu
Genesis 1:10 And God saw that it was good
Septuagint translation:
καὶ εἶδεν ὁ Θεός, ὅτι καλόν
And God saw that it was beautiful
I John 4:7-8
Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is forn of God and knows God. 8 He would does not love does not know God; for God is love.
“This way of seeing the world also changes how you might think about life. If everything has some sort of intrinsic meaning, then reality is less like a collection of objects in space and more like a story... a huge, cosmic narrative, rich with themes and bursting with meaning.”
- Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age by Zachary Porcu
“Art for Liszt was God made manifest; it ennobled the human race; insofar as the artist was a bearer of the beautiful, he was like a priest ministering to his congregation.”
Alan Walker, Liszt Vol. I, p.159
Music, for Liszt, was the voice of God. He often behaved as if music possessed healing properties. Because of its divine origin, he seemed to say, mere exposure to it was a spiritual balm.
Alan Walker, Franz Liszt: the Weimar Years, p.390
From Liszt himself:
Is not music the mysterious language of a faraway spirit world whose wondrous accent, echoing within us, waken us to a higher, more intensive life?
Art is heaven on earth, to which one never appeals in vain when faced with the oppressions of this world.”
Franz Liszt quoted in Alan Walker, Liszt Vol II, p.391
“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained” Solzhenitsyn, Gulag Archepelago
“Dostoyevsky once let drop an enigmatic remark: “Beauty will save the world.” What is this? For a long time it seemed to me simply a phrase. How could this be possible? When in the bloodthirsty process of history did beauty ever save anyone, and from what? Granted, it ennobled, it elevated-but whom did it ever save?
So perhaps the old trinity of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty is not simply the decorous and antiquated formula it seemed to us at the time of our self-confident materialistic youth. If the tops of these three trees do converge, as thinkers used to claim, and if the all too obvious and the overly straight sprouts of Truth and Goodness have been crushed, cut down, or not permitted to grow, then perhaps the whimsical, unpredictable, and ever surprising shoots of Beauty will force their way through and soar up to that very spot, thereby fulfilling the task of all three.”

Bach Prelude in B-flat Minor as you've NEVER heard it!

Bach Prelude in B-flat Minor as you've NEVER heard it!
I got the Chester sheet music and am learning this beautiful transcription. I'm unsure what to do close to the end where the left hand does a B-B octave followed by a C-E 10th but I don't have the span for the latter. The video quality isn't great but it doesn't seem like Paul is doing a 10th either... Examples at 4:46, 4:51, 4:58 (and measure 115 in the sheet music). If anyone could help that would be awesome ❤
So glad you are learning this beautiful transcription! Yes I do actually play the 10th in m115 but if you have a smaller hand you can always break it - just play the C a bit before the downbeat - it will still sound great! The same 10th happens in m.59 but you can redistribute this one and play the E with the RH. I'm playing this transcription on my Re-Enchantment Tour this year. Opening at Pepperdine University on Feb 6 and CSUN on Feb 7. Hope you can make it!
@@unlklavier Thank you so much! I'll try that out. I live in SF so not too far from LA and I'll very likely make the trip for your performance at CSUN. Looking forward to it!

Glass is genius
In terms of originality blending with traditional, this is one of Philip's best of orchestral works. Possibly just ahead of Symphony three. Intelligent and sophisticated orchestration punctuated with solo piano. Flute has a wonderful child like quality, in line with the simplicity of native American origins. Encore!
Spectacular
Sounds like his 1st violin concerto but for piano.
This Man is INCREDIBLY TALENTED.... ABSOLUTELY GREAT VISION OF PHILIP GLASS 'S MUSIC.
Playing this on all my recitals this season. Hope you can come to one!
Thank you!👁❤
Although Im a placed fan, I think music has to always keep simple. PG work is stunning and this version is just as appealing as th original one
Since becoming a Buddhist I appreciate Philip Glass' music even more. I've always loved it musically but I think it also has a Buddhist sensibility. Glass himself practices Tibetan Buddhism. Glass' work has a mantra-like quality to it. Listening to it is centering and focusing if you approach the repeated portions like the words of a mantra to be given your full attention.
I listen to this while putting up dishes to make the chore even more boring.
Thank you… wonderful! 👏👏👏👏😊
je joue du piano depuis 6 ans et j'étudie ceci
Absolutely Great.
Deep, rich Sound. This Man is really talented Pianist.
out of curiosity, I believe your rendition is shorter than the original. Why and how did you determine which parts to cut? Your performance is really excellent.
Thank you for commenting! For this video I just left out the repeats. In my studio recording I do all the repeats. You can listen here: open.spotify.com/track/2OUSXZOfYtzTOug5OZhlvh?si=JffTvh3HR26r-7n8AiA9yg
Ahora si que se descosió el Director con esta maravillosa obra de Glass.

Bravo a l'hautboiste pour le souffle dans le debut du 3e mvt. Et Bravo a tout le monde, la flute est magique
Excellent performance. The pianist is top notch. All from memory too!! Beautiful sounding piano too
I listened to this while at the gym. Perfect Match. The repetitive movements mesh with the music
Horrible.. I think Philip glass is done.. nothing to say..
Fantastic! Thank you so much for making this available. It is such a beautiful and evocative concerto. I have been listening to Philip Glass's music for a few years but have only just come across this wonderful concerto and performance. Definitely the Glass sound, very beautiful. Thank you.
What crap!
Just discovered this and I’m mesmerized! Thank you.
Mr. Barnes interpretation is very stunning and the flutist is exceptional. Thank you. 🙏
No matter the age of the Master, he continues to amaze us all. A brilliant work. Reminds me of an avalanche of musical notes that perfectly falls into place. Bravo, Maestro! This period of music will be known as the Glasstonian Period.
