UP 4014 Heads East up Donner Pass!! - Roseville, CA. to Sparks, NV. (Hits Tree)
Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 heads east over the former Southern Pacific Donner Pass, challenging the steep grades of the original Transcontinental Railroad.
We begin our journey in Newcastle, California.
The first train of the day was CDTX 2123 West, from Auburn, California. One Capitol Corridor train runs between San Jose, and Auburn California daily.
After an hour wait; the crowd has nearly tripled as Big Boy No. 4014 approaches up Track Two. Locals and railfans alike line the tracks on both sides to watch 4014 roar up grade. Our second view from Newcastle shows how dense the crowd gets as you near the grade crossing and their packed parking lots, shortly before the clip ends.
In Auburn, 4014 struck a fallen tree on Main Two. This accident prompted a three hour delay, and the cancelation of the planned whistle-stops in Colfax, and Truckee California, as well as their planned display in Sparks, Nevada. After a lengthy three and a half hour wait, we finally were given the news that 4014 was on the move again at high speed, attempting to make up for their lost time.
This lead to our scene of Union Pacific 4014 blasting through the original 1909 tunnel portal, Tunnel 27, with Union Pacific 1983, the Western Pacific Heritage locomotive at full throttle.
In the second clip at Applegate, you can see a photoline that spans across the mainline, for the unique shot that this tunnel provides. Tunnel 27 is unique with its "third" tunnel portal. This was a result of the overused number of explosives during a track lowering project in the 1960s. With the original portal of Tunnel 27 never posing a threat to the railroad, it was kept and still stands today!
After leaving Applegate, we work our way east past Colfax, to the not so secret town.. Secret Town, California!
Secret Town provides many opportunities to look down upon trains passing underneath I-80 and Magra Road, before snaking into the hills up to Gold Run. As Big Boy passes under I-80, we see that traffic has come to a standstill on the busy highway, for a glimpse at the largest operating steam locomotive in the world.
Moving along to our next locations at Baxter and Towle, California; we get an unexpected surprise of the ICBOA (Intermodal - Council Bluffs, IA. to Oakland, CA.).
Note: The lady standing in the shot of the ICBOA, which was on track one, seems careless of the approaching train. Though she is not on the current track the train is approaching on.. Big Boy would pass on the same track she stood on only minutes later. This is a prime example of what 𝐍𝐎𝐓 to do when a train is approaching, regardless of which track.
At Towle, we see lighter crowds, as Union Pacific 4014 passes beneath I-80 yet again.
Moving slightly eastward back to Baxter, we first hear 4014 blaring its whistle, before they come into view as they round the curve. With Ed more pissed then ever, we get our eardrums blasted out as 4014 charges up grade with 𝑡𝑜𝑜 many people closer then 25 feet to the track.
At Yuba Gap, we get our last look at 4014 passing beneath I-80.
Moving slightly east to Yuba Pass, we capture 4014 exiting Tunnel 35, at MP. 175.86, and enter Tunnel 36 at MP. 176.0. Plumes of black smoke fill the air as 4014 approaches, and as Big Boy exits Tunnel 35. We are able to see the smoke deflectors drop shortly after exiting the tunnel, and rise up as they enter the next.
After climbing our way all the way up Donner Pass, we reach the summit at Norden!
With little time to set up, and many people crowding the tracks.. we get a glimpse of Big Boy as 4014 approaches, and rounds the curve through Norden as they head down-grade towards Truckee. In the second clip at Norden, listen to the echo 4014's whistle gives as they approach the Big Hole.
With the whistle-stop being canceled in Truckee, we skip our next location.. and head further east to CPRV 208, at East Truckee. Tri-Lights still protect this control point, providing a unique opportunity to capture 4014 crossing over from track one, to track two. With upwards of a thousand people in Downtown Truckee, the crowds shown here are significantly lighter then what we could've encountered if we had stuck to our original plan. Notice how the signals only turn on after 4014 splits the opposing end of the control point..
In the second clip at East Truckee, we can see a thin line of people stretching from the control point, up to what was originally a crossing.
Reaching our last stop, at Verdi, Nevada we get a wide shot as 4014 crosses the Truckee River over the more notable, and lengthy bridge of the two. Listening to the scanner, we hear Ed discussing plans of deboarding the train, as well as the 97 axles from the 229.8 detector.
The sun hides between the clouds and the mountain peaks, as sunset begins and as Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 races for Sparks..

ICBOA?
@@caltrain_acefoamer907 Yes
Dang, you get close to those trains, especially the Amtrak at the beginning of the video. Train crews don't like it when rail fans endanger themselves, as it looked like the conductor on 5024 told you.
Some shots do appear close to the trains, which is true, but I ensure you I only put my tripod and phone in danger for a shot that close.. not myself. Also, the conductor leaning out of 5024 is a close friend I have on the railroad, informing us we would two trains meeting at that location after they cleared out. (She pointed to the left, indicating the westbound local which is the next clip, 9:20 then pointed to the right.. indicating the eastbound which is featured in the next clip after the local at 10:50.
@@RenoRailfan Ok thanks for the clarification. Sometimes rail fans can become a legitimate safety concern for the crews . Great video BTW.
What an idiot. 25 feet away from the tracks is standard.
Bro hit a tree 💀
Not surprised
👍🥰🥰🙏
Is it normal for something to release that much smoke 💀
Very normal
I miss the Tillamook Railroad to banks. That is why I hate all the people who approved the lease. Because I would have voted down the Salmonberry trail.
👍🏻
Great chase bud!
Thanks!
nice!!!
I see me on the other side at Newcastle
I used to love riding the container cars, once you got on those you are going long distance.
Which one was the Karen, the one you could see or the one you could hear? Asking for a friend
alright bro CLEARLY you can see who the karen is here
@greaternyrailfan Of course I can see clearly, but MY FRIEND maybe has eye problems, lol
Stupid
Very good video
Circus train
I'm surprised California let them run through the state with as much smoke it puts out.
I am 86. In the early 1940s I lived in a town in the Central Valley of California. There was a rail passenger station a few blocks away. When I heard the sound of a steam locomotive I'd RUN to the corner to see it go by. I was so disappointed when the steam engines were replaced by diesel engines. Just not the same!
@@puma30880 That’s so cool! Thank you for your comment, diesels are just not the same as steam!
Lindo lindo lindo!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Whats the stick the guy is carrying when he jumps off?
The crew uses the stick to tie handbrakes on railcars from the ground.
I saw the big boy in New orleans in 2021
Well, hello handsome!

Awesome.

Nice RS3K!
The Reno Branch Line was originally built as a narrow gauge by the Nevada California and Oregon RR. From Reno it traversed the Reno Branch and then up to Flanagan, Wendel and the Modoc Line to Alturas then up to Lakeview OR
Cool Video
Great video!
Thank you!
Nice!!!
Awesome!
Another Reno Branch video is in the works! Stay tuned!!
I notice 4014 always needs a diesel electric locomotive doing all the work. Is the 4014 even capable of running on it's own anymore......
4014 can run on its own, without any diesel locomotive. They choose to run it with a helper for their dynamic brakes. 4014 doesn't use the diesel to "do all the work", but to provide less ware on the breaks.
The title is deceiving.. this does not go to Carson but rather only Mount House...
Though it appears and feels that way, the Eastgate Depot does reside in "Carson City" Address Proves Such: 4650 Eastgate Siding Rd, Carson City, NV.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the local this long before
Nice catches
Years ago when I used to go to the Reno Air Races out by Stead Airport I remember there was train tracks along the 395 and at Stead Airport are those the same ones that you see here? I never did follow them and knew where they went. Wasn’t familiar with the area to be honest still not familiar but I haven’t been to Reno in years. Thank you for the video either way.
I wish it actually went into Carson City. So sad that the Nevada State Railroad Museum - with its almost pathetic little circle of track - couldn't somehow be linked to this. The end of the ROW (albeit without track) is only a few miles away.
Would not make any difference operationally for the Museum if there were a connection. Much of the historical equipment being operated at the Railroad Museum is only possible to be actually operated because it is all on Private Property. As soon as you cross a public right of way or off of private property all equipment becomes subject to current FRA Rules. Which means you would be unable to actually experience riding in a wooden coach built in the 1870s but would have to look at it as a static display like at so many other museums. Money No Object, a connection between the Museum trackage and the V&T Commission depot at Eastgate would be nice to have, but isn't practical given current land use, the multiple public streets that would need to be crosses [all requiring very expensive automated signal protection] and the cost to acquire the necessary Right of Way.
nice! I hope you did enjoy the big boy trip.
I like that Reno still uses SD70m units ....i grew up in Roseville and you wont see any there anymore
My town ;) nice to see this because there's not much out there for Reno up through Patrick etc
Very well done video. I've often wondered about this train as I've seen it approaching Bordertown. Is there ever any interchanging of cars at Reno Jct.? Sometimes, when I look at the track as CA SR-70 passes over, the track seems to look shiny as if a train passes over it.
@@lanefrank6208 They do not run anywhere past Bordertown.

Nice video. I have lawys been fascinated by this branch with the sharp curves and steep grades. Thanks for putting it together.
Great shots
Thanks for this! VERY glad to see the V&TRR is back!
1:45 Amtrak's Genesis units! I love the second unit's Phase III paint scheme better than first unit's Phase V scheme, and that goes for the Phase 4 after Amtrak gave unit 164 that paint scheme to replace heritage unit 184 and never repaint one of them into the phase iii colors that I like from 1993 or 96, so I'm bored of Phase 4 and the Phase 3 heritage colors from 2011.
😢 Great video! Thanks for sharing...
