This is why you never spray you clock’s mechanism with wd-40 or any other type of spray oil. This poor clock had been a victim of what looks like graphite spray. After ruining a batch of cleaning solution, polishing all pivots, installing 13 bushings, and scrubbing the mainsprings, it now runs great again with a very optimistic pendulum swing.

Early Herschede grandfather clock with the two train three function movement. The movement uses a series of cams and levers to play the quarterly chimes and strike the hour on one single gear train. Notice the very large weight for the chime and strike train, it weighs 30 pounds!

Very cool how these early Herschede movements work, could you make a video of your Herschede dual chime wall clock perhaps?
I believe this clock is a triple fusee type and it usually handmade but it possesses one of the largest cathedral gong strikes!
@@Fred-nz9dp this one actually is not a fusee, just direct spring driven. It realistically should have been a fusee since the chime spring is extremely hard to wind and makes for a sore wrist and fingers.
@yeah I can tell by clicking noises before the deep striking sound!
@ as long as the winding key snug fit but if it too loose the ratchet will fail and will literally turn into finger cutter! Large mainsprings are terrifying!
Great explanation!
Ingenious indeed, but aren't these movements known to also be rather finicky at times, not to mention a right pain to work on?
They can be finicky, but if repaired properly, they can be quite reliable. They do require service more frequently to keep the music roll pivots oiled since they slide and well as turn. They need to be oiled with a slightly thicker oil such as keystone medium weight spring oil. The index plate with the spiral groove also needs a drop of the same oil. They are definitely a pain to work on since these movements have a lower tolerance for wear and sometimes it’s tough to find all of the wear points. Bushings must be perfectly at the original center as any misalignment of wheels and pinions will rob essential power from the train.

What does winchester sound like on it?
@@kansasclocksandsirens this clock only plays Westminster and Canterbury which was exclusive to Herschede movements. Winchester was found on winterhalder movements which I have one and will post a video when I get some time.
@@clockdude1500 stupid me. I didn't notice the herschede movement part
Have one of these. Dials a tad different on mine and a lighter shade of brown & also a higher pitched rod but it’s pretty much the exact one you have. Very nice clock u got!
I feel like jacks lament or Greensleeves would be an interesting clock chime
ISTIRACHO
gorgeous!
La canción de la alegría
That’s really nice!! I love the sound too!
With the pause it reminds me of Big Ben
Beautiful clocks
Company name
Semplicemente stupendo 😍😍😍😍quanto costa?
I live it. Nice 👍
1:06 does the strike tube hammer tip not have any leather padding at all?
It does, but for some reason the microphone makes it sound louder and tinnier than it does in person.
What should I use to make a Herschede silver dial look new again without ruining it?
There really isn’t anything you can do without resilvering it completely. The dial is made of brass and a process using a silvering powder is used to make it appear silver. Unfortunately, any attempts at cleaning will only make it worse.
Very pretty! How tall are they?
The one on the left that is chiming in this video is 92” and the one to the right of it is 96”.
@@MrReptile-oy8wqyep
Just curious, what clock is playing the Westminster chime in the background?
That is a very early English 9 tube clock made by Russels Ltd of Liverpool. Hopefully I can get a video of it at some point.
Rarer chime - AND on tubes, thanks for sharing.
Verdaderamente maravilloso!!!❤❤❤
sounds a lot like mine. same movement?
Almost. This one was made in 1924 when they moved the strike tube to the left of the longest chime tube. I would guess yours is probably 1922 or 1923 since the strike tube is to the right of the shortest chime tube.
This sounds so different from Herschede's standard Whittington. 26.Oct.2023
I love those clocks!
The secences aren't in order correctly. But it sounds gorgeous.
Why is the strike faster than usual?
Because the strike and chime is combined into one gear train so it runs at the same speed. I plan to make a video in the future showing how this movement works, it’s very interesting.
@@clockdude1500is this a Waltham?
@@DeepSnowRider no, it’s a colonial mfg case with a Herschede movement
Majestic tone
I own this car now. Mine has the sunroof, touch climate, and the same marks/dings in the plastic molding on the front bumper. How in the world was this video recommended to me by the algorithm. I just dyno'd it at 400 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels
That’s really cool! I always wondered what happened to this car after my grandfather sold it. Is it still in Michigan by chance?
@@clockdude1500 It is. Greater Lansing area. I go to college at Kettering University in flint. I’ve had the car since my dad found it in 2019.
@@jafferm1938 I believe that’s the year my grandfather sold it. I checked out your videos, looks like it’s had some mods done like the gauges on the drivers side A pillar.
@@clockdude1500 precision te62 turbo, stage 1 built trans, 3200 stall converter, methanol injection kit etc. plus all the other bolt ons to make that stuff work. It’s a fun car. Haven’t touched the paint. Wanna keep it original
@@jafferm1938 that’s awesome! It really is a fun car, my grandfather and I used to take it to Woodward every year with the Grand National club. There was a sticker on the package tray that said “it’s just a Buick, how fast can it be?” Not sure if you ever found that, it might have fallen into one of the crevices. My grandfather and I repainted the deck lid when he get it from Barrett Jackson in Florida back in 2011 I believe, other than that it should be all original paint except for the front clip which was redone sometime before he got it.
My dream clock!
Nice quail cuckoo clock
Beautiful job
Beautiful sounding clock!
Why does the weight weigh thirty pounds?
Due to the fact that the chime and strike train are combined, it takes more weight to drive it. The weight for my 7 tube colonial with this same movement is 38 pounds.
Virginian?
This one pre- dates when they started giving them model names. This one is from 1909, the Virginian was introduced in the 1940’s.
@@clockdude1500I also noticed how the strike train did not turn off right after the strike ended, why is that?
@@V.G.F. that is because the music roll returns to its home position before the train stops. This clock has a very unusual movement that Herschede developed in 1909 that only uses one gear train for both chime and strike operation through a series of cams and levers.
@@clockdude1500I have another question, did Herschede continue making these movements until their closure in 1984? Or did they discontinue them sometime?
@@V.G.F. the two train three function movement was discontinued in 1919 because it can be troublesome and many failed prematurely. Not to mention it takes a lot of strength to wind the weight for the chime and strike train, especially in the 7 and 9 tube models where it weighs nearly 40 pounds.
I've owned 6 GNs since 87 always wanted this one
Beautiful clock!
Beautiful ❤
Great! Need some new leather on that strike hammer, though.
It sure does! I replaced all the chime leathers but forgot that one.
I wish the Jauch 15 hammer movements were common as well
I believe this could be a Kieninger concerto movement! Howard Miller uses this in at least two of their floor clocks.
@@Corgipon this is a kieninger. I'm referring to the movements Jauch KG made with 15 hammers and played ave maria
Can I have it please?
No, sorry. This clock was a Christmas gift from my family many years ago and is part of my permanent collection.
Can I have it please for £0?
I sold this clock over 10 years ago.. sorry
The gong is so monotone, I LOVE ITT
Even with the original box? Amazing
I love this one
Did Herschede make the movement?
Yes, the movement is Herschede. It’s one of the early two train three function movements.
