The first game I played with a depressing story after Dark Souls Series is Nier Automata. NieR replicant was sad, but at least had a relatively happier ending. Not a single story in the third playthrough has anything remotely pleasant. I expected the Machine Village to be the only peaceful thing in the game, you had those quests where you build a slide for the kid machines in the village, and A2 having the closest thing to normalcy in life. And then BAM! Machine Zombie Virus that destroys everything, and Pascal runs away to safety with kids. And you expect, "Ok. That's not completely bad, Pascal still has the kids to rebuild a village with." And BAM! Hostile machines and tanks spawn everywhere. And then Pascal hacks into a goliath and defeats all machines. "Ok, we won. Everything's good now." And BAM! All the kids killed themselves out of fear, and Pascal is traumatized and asks you to delete his memories. And to make things more depressing, you find Pascal back in the village, alone, with no memory. And then is selling the machine cores of all the dead children machines, saying he has no idea what to do with this junk. ...

I played Nier Autamata I don't remember seeing that and I got a few hours in it

Fortunately for me, I never had to donate my save data to help others get through the bullet hell credits. I played the prologue and first chapter at max level yesterday. Even aggro'd the Giant Stubby Bunny, and relearned how to dodge. I remember normally fighting him with 9S because hacks did a number on it. Possibly A2 for taunts. Anyway, It was fun.

I like how Nines actually looks both pitiable and scary at the same time when he looks at the camera with those red eyes. Really well drawn, it really fits.
