    good video! love the 'fly-around' of the horns, in sync with the powerful music. think of all the phone calls, all of the television broadcasts that were carried by these antennas

    AT&T use to have a 5G Relay in the steeple of our church. I guess it was good income for the church. I got there after ATT&T had moved elsewhere. Honestly, having such a high power 5 G transmitter in the same building, IMHO, isn't a good health source.

    • @fgaviator
      @fgaviator 23 дні тому

      5G is actually really low power. Nothing compared to the FM or even old AM radio transmitters. These were *really* powerful. And you wouldn't want to live directly below an AM transmitter blasting 50KW or more into the air. But 5G relays - they are operating at the power-level of a light bulb...

    i live nearby...they had local people in there cutting the grass and an inflatable alien zip tied in the guard shack haha...years ago we had a gentleman who was a member of our amateur radio club who worked in that location...long time Bell of Pennsylvania employee and we got a tour of the place...he is long gone now but they had racks and racks of equipment and we got to talk to one another on one of the unused uplink and down link frequencies and it was like a 2 or 3 second delay...it was cool. this was like 1988 or 1989 if memory serves correctly. he said that the next closest relay point was in the Congo and was totally remotely controlled.

      I'm sure that was a great tour. All about knowing someone with the right connections. AT&T was involved with so much prior to the forced break up in 1983. Thanks for watching!

    I believe this tower was connected to the AT&T long lines tower on Pine Grove Mountain (State College). Following old antenna diode maps, it appears at one point these towers communicated. Unfortunately the site no longer has microwave horns and is now owned by American Tower, in which it has been repurposed for LTE/Cellular.

      @det3318 Місяць тому

      That would make sense. The one horn left at the building in State College is facing the wrong direction. It seems like there may have been another tower in the area somewhere. Unfortunately as time goes on, its harder to get good information. Thanks for watching!

    I never realized how vast this microwave system was. Incredible technology for the time. It’s really sad that most of the long lines towers around FL no longer have the horn antennas. Just empty towers with square holes where the horns once were 😢

    Awesome video! I know of a long lines tower just about the size of this one thats just outside of Auburn, MS. Sadly im not sure how much longer it will be there as its completely left abandoned, no cone antennas anymore and it never had any new equipment put on it just a tower now.

      From my research it looks like the one in Auburn would have served as sort of a crossroads for one in Wesson, Cranfield, McComb, and Gloster. It seems like alot of the towers simply sit abandoned now. Thanks for watching.

    Is there a resource you use to find these sites? Im not super familiar with these and would love to see if I could find one to see in person. I assume, given my region (Southern Ozarks) that theyre around but difficult to get to, due to the geography and property ownership, etc.

      I just simply use Google, you can find several sites dedicated to the topic, AT&T Long Lines. Some of the tower sites I found by driving by. There have been several that I've wanted to film, but can't due to there location, as you state, geography and ownership. Thanks for watching.

    I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos of the old Long Line sites as it reminds me of the unadulterated imagination of my childhood. This was the leading edge of technology in those days and to take a long distance call was a unique experience: Unlike today, we could hear the "lag time" in the microwave transmission from sender to receiver. It presented as an echo of sorts. Again, thank you for you diligence and cinematography, which is wonderful.

    See that large rectangular formation on the ground, at the northwest end? Looks like the remnant of a wastewater retention basin, similar to what was incorporated into Army missile bases in the early 70s. It's the correct size and distance from the main buildings. I'll bet that there is / was lots of self-sufficiency built into the facility; maybe much below ground. The utility entrance appears to be on the northeast side of the building, near where it looks like the HVAC equipment and generators are housed.

    This looks like a minor connection relay site. No "garage door" on the bunker, indicating there was probably nothing below. If there are no modern antennas on the tower, it's probably not in use for anyone anymore. Note how the MW horns appear to focus just slightly around the nearby mountain. They beam their signals in a zig-zag pattern to avoid interference from other stations directly in line.
