The attic in Hauptmann's building was directly above his rented suite and accessible only from that suite. The attic floor was only partially finished, with boards nailed to the joists about half way along. The joists themselves were not long enough to run end to end, so two joists were attached together about mid-way, running at right angles to the covered portion. The joists were “staggered” (not butted up to each other) and the floor boards ended at or about the staggered portion, with nails running through the board to each joist. This resulted in a similar “staggered” configuration of nail holes (two each) on the board. Picture a half-floor that you could walk on, but when you reached the middle of the floor all that remained were the exposed joists. If you wanted to walk all the way across, you’d have to hold on to the roof and balance on the joists or risk falling through the insulation and ceiling plaster. This was Hauptmann’s attic. When police searched the attic (not on the first search, I’m told), they noticed that the last floorboard was shorter than the others and did not run all the way across. On closer examination they found a small cut or “tooth” mark in the adjacent board, indicating that a saw had been used to cut the last board. They had no way of knowing when this happened, and the missing portion was not in attic. Without knowing anything else (yet), we can infer these characteristics about the missing piece of board: (1) The missing board would be the same type of wood as the rest of the attic boards. (2) The surface of the missing board would have the same mill plaining characteristics as the surface of the remaining boards. (3) Both sides of the grain on the missing board would match the butt-end of the grain on the remaining portion when the two pieces were joined up. (4) The missing board would have two sets of nail holes (total four) which would be a perfect match with the now-empty nail holes on the staggered joists. (5) If the missing board had been altered by a carpenter’s plane after removal, the plaining characteristics on the board would match the characteristics of that particular plain. (6) If the missing board had been shortened after removal, its grain pattern and markings could still be matched to the remaining board by a draftsman’s rendering as long as the missing piece was small enough. Put another way, the grain and markings on both ends of the boards will show you the natural flow and design of the wood surface, so with a small enough "gap" it's no trick to line the two pieces up, extend the markings from both ends, and produce a simple drawing that shows the missing section. Go to www.nj.gov/state/archives/slcsp001.html and see for yourself (photos #12-18, among others). Study the wood evidence in the Lindberg kidnapping case. Rail 16 of the kidnap ladder gives us proof stronger than any DNA. The evidence is so conclusive and so damming that most Hauptmann apologists simply gloss it over or ignore it altogether. (Shame on them.) As one pundit wisely put it: the evidence is unanswerable. Rail 16 came from Hauptman’s attic. In any drama or discussion about Hauptmann's innocence, or guilt, or half-guilt, or co-conspirators, or Lindberg's involvement, or whatever...start from that point, please. [Read “The Sixteenth Rail” by Adam J. Schrager. It’s all there.]

The biggest problem with the evidence against Hauptmann is that rail #16, purportedly repurposed from his attic floor was 1/8" THICKER than the adjacent plank. The same plank with supposed matching grain. I can imagine the carpenter planing down a plank to be thinner, but how could he have made the rail THICKER?

1:00:00 Rail 16 was manufactured by the police. It's such a transparent hoax that it wouldn't pass rational scrutiny by forensic investigators today.
