Getting my 29th Warbler Species! (POV Bird Photography in Nova Scotia)
Spring is an exciting time in Nova Scotia for anyone who loves BIRDS. This video was recorded during the peak of spring migration in King's County, NS.
It was an amazing morning for me because I got a LIFER, and a warbler at that. I also found a bird that I had only seen once before, and never in NS.
For whatever reason, this location on the side of a rural highway is a fantastic spot to see birds, and today, it did not disappoint!
Thanks for joining me on this beautiful morning. Let me know if you've seen the birds from the video!

      @t.alexmoore Місяць тому

      Majestic Colonial Resort (there are 3 Majestic Resorts, all attached). It was ok for birding but I’d like to try a resort on the far end of Bavaro Beach where there might be more forest cover. I’m planning to do a review about my experience in Punta Cana that will be map focused to discuss potential better options. In terms of food, drinks, amenities… the resort was amazing. Might be returning in a few weeks.

    do you have any tips to get a shot of flying bird with this camera?

    • @t.alexmoore
      @t.alexmoore Місяць тому

      For flight shots I used the autofocus zone vs the spot autofocus. Makes it a little bit easier, and I always use back button autofocus.

    i have same setup canon t7 and sigma 150-60 contenporary. It is soooo hard to get a flying bird shot because af is this camera sucks. I'm probably gonna buy r7 soon

      So I bought the R7 and I used it all summer. I’ve got a few videos recorded with it that I’m working on. It’s much better for flight shots but I already sold it as I want to buy an R5 instead.

      Sorry I missed this comment from a few months ago. It’s not the easiest place to get into that’s for sure. I’ve been back a few times and I’ve never had the best luck there. If I didn’t follow eBird or my local birding community on Facebook, I’d never know it was such a hot spot.

    Congrats, you've gone mirrorless now. Will be good to hear your experience of pairing the Canon R7 and a Sigma lens. Any issues with focusing or the pulsating issue that some people report ? thanks In terms of your question in the video, using an Canon EF lens on the R7 is no issue as they work well together, you don't really need a Canon RF lens. Its third party lenses that seems to have issues with Canon Mirrorless given they are not officially supported by Canon.

    • @t.alexmoore
      @t.alexmoore Місяць тому

      So… I’ve already sold the R7. Heading into the slow season, I found that I wasn’t shooting as much and the R7 with the Sigma lens was difficult to use in the forest. I thought that focusing on a bright yellow warbler surrounded by green leaves would be easy, but not so. If I manually focused or was able to get the autofocus to hit, the eye tracking was amazing. Flight shots were also fantastic compared to my DSLR, but I sold it to help motivate me towards an R5. I’m ready for a full frame camera and I’d also like to get the 100-500 lens soon as well.

      Paperwork no. Do not bring a drone to Cuba (you can get paperwork for drones in Dominican Republic). They did ask me to take every single electronic device (cords, chargers, batteries, lenses) out of my bag, which was no fun. Try to only bring a minimal amount of gear (unlike me) lol.

      Thanks man. I finally got a day without crazy wind. I also had to update the firmware of course, so my first attempt got me 30m off the ground before it wouldn’t go any further. No issues in the airport (lack of security was almost concerning in itself, compared to Cuba which is like trying to enter Fort Knox)

    Congrats on the Wilson’s Warbler, we have them in Alberta but not at this time of year! I didn’t use eBird at first (didn’t know about it), but I do use it all the time now. I have 377 world species and 252 for Alberta. Happy Birding! I shoot a D5600 with same Sigma 150-600mm lens as you but I shoot in AUTOFOCUS as I’m scared to shoot in manual. 😂

    Nice to see you get the shots with a Canon Rebel,I use a Nikon D500 and have not switched to mirrorless yet...I had the Z8 for a month and my computer and or editing software couldn't keep up with 20fps at 47megapixels. I need a D500 mirrorless 20-24 megapixel camera. maybe the Z6iii will fit my needs

    • @t.alexmoore
      @t.alexmoore 10 місяців тому

      Interesting- I've always been thinking about how large the file size and how many images you must get with a camera like the Z8. I'm really torn between getting the R7 which is basically a mirrorless version of what I have now, or go big and get the R5 (basically the Canon version of the Z8: huge file size, full frame). I'm very used to the reach I get with a crop sensor and a 600mm lens. I worry that given how much I crop, a full frame camera with 24 MP might not be enough.

    • @t.alexmoore
      @t.alexmoore 10 місяців тому

      I'm at about 250- I'm sure if I spent more time by the ocean I would get a few types of gulls that would help my life list. I've also been lucky to visit Cuba, Dominican Republic and California recently where I got ~ 30 new birds in each place. I'm sure in Costa Rica or Brazil one could find 300 species in a few days!

      Its getting harder and harder to get lifers without traveling... I can only imagine what its like for people who have been birding locally for 20+ years!

      @@t.alexmoore yes! Very true! Have to travel, no other option. I saw my first 60-70 birds for the year in first one week here in California and now to reach 90 i had to struggle a lot.

    It's always exciting to get a lifer, but two in one day is awesome. I think it's possible you might have even caught 3 lifers. Those cormorants look like White-breasted cormorants. (usually found in Africa, but limpkins are usually found in Florida, so... lol) Anyway, I don't think they are the typical great-crested cormorants that we in North America are used to seeing. You might want to check into it. I enjoy your videos. thank you!

      I did see the thing about the cormorants when I searched them. I could ask my local FB group, or report it as a white-breasted on eBird and wait for the emails to arrive telling me its not. Hmm.

      Welcome! I used to live in Alberta before I was into birding (Alberta was where I started getting into photography). Can't wait to return and get some West Coast lifers!

    Wow congrats on spotting that yellow breasted chat lifer bird! Also at 1:51, it seems like female or juvenile male costas hummingbird. For flight shot, I always use the more autofocus point till I get the focus on the bird, once I get bird in focus, I use eye tracking so I have bird eye sharp. Also using the wider focal length to spot the bird then increasing the focal length to get close up of bird helps if you have zoom lens.
