How To Rebuild Nissan 350Z OR G35 Differential 4.08 Ring and Pinion Upgrade
Install Guide for R200 350z G35 and 370z differentials being converted to different gear ratios or installing 2-way or 1.5 way LSD carrier assembly. This specific ratio is 4.08 but this guide will work for all other gear ratio conversions within this specific type of differential

Changing the rear end gear on your car is one of the best performance upgrades you can make;. A good way to think of your rear end gear is to compare it to changing from 1st to 2nd gear. You can accelerate faster in 1st gear than you can in 2nd gear assuming traction is not a limiting factor; the trade off is 1st gear is going to have a lower top speed than 2nd gear. By changing the rear end ratio from a very typical 3.5 gear ratio to a more performance oriented 4.08 gear ratio, you are shortening all the gears in your transmission. This means you will accelerate quicker in each gear, but the top speed of each gear will be lower.
While it might seem tempting to simply buy the shortest gear ratio available, there is more to it than that. There are many online calculators to help you choose the right rear end ratio; things like tire diameter, transmission ratios, and redline.
For the 350Z, the main aftermarket options are 3.69, 3.92, and 4.08 I've also recently discover a 4.3 ratio. all of these options are great but the most popular recently has been the 4.08 ratio conversion.

This is my first differential build, and I have a question that might be stupid Do you measure the carrier bearing preload with a spring gauge? After correctly setting the pinion preload, I can’t get the carrier bearing preload within spec with the pinion installed even with no carrier shims its to to tight/heavy. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Love the vid keep it up
Video was very helpful but you never torqued the carrier bolts. You ran them in with the impact and said you were going to go back and torque them but never actually did in the video
fantastic video. Also a tip ive learned for 35:45 is to use your stub axles. drop 2 bolts through the stub axle holes, clamp it in a vise, and drop your carrier onto the axle.. for my jeep diffs ive put the axle right back to the wheel and used it as a post to do it on😂
Do you need a new crush sleeve each time you swap out pinion spacers?
@@JoeBlow-fo9np I used the same one, once the preload is set just count the rotation removing the nut and reinstall it the same amount of rotations and you wont over crush the sleeve
Sorry if this is a dumb question im new to all of this but trying to learn on my own diff. The tool your holding at 27:16, did you modify something to make that? I cant seem to find a bearing sleeve or something that will sit on the inside of the bearing but also fit around the pinion so i can press the bearing on. Thanks in advance this video has helped me a ton.
@@2000whitey believe it or not its a inner race of an old pinion bearing, i cut the cage off and removed all the rollers.
Props to you, just rebuilding my Skyline diff including all bearings and this video is a life saver!
Addressing an incorrect piece of information in this video: Backlash measurement was refered to in video was millimeter scale not inches- proper backlash can be found below to clear up confusion. Backlash spec is as follows 0.10 - 0.15 mm (0.0039 - 0.0059in)
Great vid man
Great informative video! How can I get a hold of you if you are still doing diff rebuild for customers
Best way is Instagram @Repairin_aaron shoot me a message there and we can work out details. Thanks
I bought a used diff with no shims! where did you buy the shims from? nissan wants $20 per shim!
You can purchase them from Z1 motorsports. I have collected many over the years.
You are a lifesaver... thank you.
You're welcome!
When you said it was acceptable pattern on the ring gear but it wasn’t centered I kind of lost you . when you said you had to run it with the smallest shim possible did you mean on the pinion? If so did you go thinner then 3.04 . How did you center it. The video was very good. Thank you for your information.
Sorry for the confusion, i was talking about the pinion shim being the smallest one. Heres a link thats helpful to identify what are acceptable patterns. Its not necessary centered that your trying to achieve. Sierra gear has an awesome reference from what different gear patterns mean and how to correct them. www.sierragear.com/differential-repair-help-topics/ring-and-pinion-gear-pattern/
So what’s different between an auto & a manual diff housing?
my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/542670-manual-vs-auto-diff-side-by-side-pictures.html
I actually found today the difference is with the offset of the carrier itself. If you go on my instagram i posted the differences there
Can you replace the outer pinion bearing with just the drive shaft removed and diff still bolted in the car?
I dont think that would be possible to remove with the diff still in the car as it is pressed on the pinion. I would certainly remove the diff, remove the cover, carrier, press the pinion out, remove the seal and replace the bearing that way.
Did you use a new pinion crush sleeve every time you changed the pinion shim or did you reuse the first one? Thanks for the detailed video!
I used the same one, once the preload is set just count the rotation removing the nut and reinstall it the same amount of rotations and you wont over crush the sleeve
This is such a helpful video man! Thanks! I'm about to attempt to swap in an LSD in my Z. I have a few questions though. I'm not planning on changing my ring and pinion, so I don't plan on pressing out the pinion. Is that ok that I don't press it out? Also, since I'm not pressing it out, will my gear pattern be in spec?
You can install just the carrier/2-way portion as long as you use the same ring gear that was mated with the pinion in the diff. You will still want to inspect for proper side bearing backlash specifications with the dial indicator and adjust accordingly. I also check the painted gear pattern with every diff i build even if its just the 2-way carrier install
By far the most detailed video for a 350z g35 diff rebuild/ gear swap
Thanks man, hopefully the info helped
Learned alot man thank you.
Thanks for watching man
Nice engine under that hood, That's an all around nice car
Is this 4.08 ring gear different than the s14 4.08 r200 ring gear?
Correct, They are different
@@Repairinaaron do you know what the difference is ?
@@solonkjartansson4759 the ring gear is larger in diameter and the pinion has different characteristics, if your interested i can take pictures of them side my side as i have a few sets of each laying around.
@Repairinaaron do you know where these gears can be found? Other than buying them already pulled online?
I am really impressed by this video. Could be in a better resolution but your informations gave me an insight I have been looking for. Thx.
Tried to touch as many of the how-to’s as i could, sorry about the quality, you can adjust resolution in the setting portion of the video maybe that will help.
Do you know what the car the gear set comes out of?
Hit up @_Lets_Get_Rowdy on instagram he sells them
Pretty sure he is getting them from 2005+ Nissan Frontier rear axles.
