We documented them at this site (Aturia) and at Daracua, but we will have to review the footage carefully to see if we got video of them. I do have a video up from Daracua a few years ago where one makes a brief appearance in a shoal of Hemigrammus, but I will have to hunt for it for you.

Definitely not, they have annually booming populations that are linked to the natural rise and fall of the rivers. This means that when the water levels rise they spawn and their populations expand, and when the water levels recede, their populations shrink down to whatever fish make it back into permanent water. They can however be threatened by habitat loss- like all of the animal life in the Amazon- but the fishing communities who make their livings off of the fishery protect the habitat that the fish need because it is their way of making a living year after year.

My dad loves those and has a ton of them in his tank. They import them to the USA. I actually have a wild caught New England saltwater tank with fish that I dip net from the beach near my house. Are cardinal tetras easy to catch with a dip net by the way?​@@projectpiaba

@@theamazing10yearold65 very easy to catch when water levels are dropping and they are concentrated, impossible to catch when the rivers are fully flooded.

@@theamazing10yearold65 because the river is through the entire forest and the habitat is fairly impenetrable and the fish are spread far and wide with infinite amounts of structure to hide in.

No, there are plenty of other fish that are used for food, including many cichlids that are usually considered aquarium fish- people particularly like to eat Uaru- the piabas are only fished for the aquarium trade.

I agree! Aquarium shops world wide should advertise where their fish come from. Some people at my lfs with more experience can tell you where they come from but I'd also like the information to be on the labels. But when they use the Ruinemans Group labels consistently, you can read some basic info off the label and they also contain a QR code to the Ruinemans Group web site with more information.

Much like the reptile hobby if these areas weren't protected by the collector's for the aquarium hobby these areas would be bulldozed for other uses. I was in Madagascar on a chameleon collection trip. If the area wasn't producing revenue for the reptile hobby they would be cutting it down for building materials and farm land... It's a sad but true reality in these countries.

Too bad those same chameleons are rough-handled, knocked out of trees, f*cked with, and promptly thrown in a bag… with multiple other animals, not just chameleons. A known shy, solitary reptile, being piled into a bag with 20 others that are biting and scratching at each other. For money. To be shipped globally. And supposedly survive? And then the whole bag is thrown around and "playfully", casually swung by a neighborhood KID as they transport their catch… who oh, by the way, the kid is the one who collects the reptiles. Yes, it’s all on the documentaries on UA-cam about Madagascar. Then the kids carry their bag to the local "animal dealer", aka mafia leader, who then forcefully tosses the bag onto a scale, weighs it, and gives the kid a shilling for their troubles. And these kids line up to do it because they’re desperate. No wonder so many wild caught animals are stressed or die, or get sick. So it’s one thing if the areas are protected, but the animals’ livelihoods are not first priority. All the locals really care about is getting money because they’re living in poverty. When the chameleons go extinct, they’ll move on to the next method of securing that dime. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Sad, but true. So in a sense, captive bred is better for the animals and their overall well-being. It just doesn’t positively affect wild populations, of course.

They really do stand out! But they are also difficult to see from a distance due to how dark the water is, this likely helps them find each other, but doesn't count against them in terms of aerial predators. It's pretty rough to be a bird fishing in blackwater.
