Staying safe on Denbigh's Ridge

I go in to a little more detail on how to operate safely, when closer to the ground, whilst ridge soaring our complex ridge. Remember- always have an escape plan! members.gliding.co.uk/bga-safety-management/managing-flying-risk-index/managing-flying-risk-hill-ridge-and-mountain-soaring/
Glider uses Mountains, Convergence and thermal lift to complete task, FULL VIDEO

The task was Conwy Bridge, Nefyn, Cader Idris, Llantysillio, Lleweni Parc, 191kms. I've had a lot of people ask me to put the full video with no music in, so here is one. I sped up the motor out to the start by 8x, otherwise it'll be too boring. That is why there is no sound in that section. Never a dull day in North Wales, we get so many different soaring days, it's amazing. Thanks to Rodney W...
Cross country ridge running in a glider!

A nice North Westerly breeze allowed us to fly out of Denbigh Gliding club, soaring the ridges from Conwy down to Nefyn using the Snowdonian mountains in North Wales. Thanks to Booker Gliding Club for letting us use your Duo Discus. Thanks Rob Vaughan for use of your GoPro Thanks Simon Grice for your company, and of course Martini for the launch.
A Day out in Snowdonia
Переглядів 4225 років тому
The north west wind was blowing (albeit a little soft), but with the aid of some thermals, we soared from Conwy, to Snowdon, then to Cadar Idris, then back to Denbigh via Llantysillio. A great day out with Trevor Stuart, Rob Vaughan and Graham Stanford! GoPro ran out of battery, so it didn't film the last 30km to get home. I probably should spend more time editing, but ran out of patience as us...
Gliding in amongst Snowdonia

Firstly, huge thanks and music credits to Mike O'Neill who 'glider-fied' this song, all produced by him, awesome. Take a listen to the lyrics. An interesting day out in Snowdonia with Rob Vaughan. We went there expecting the ridges to work in the South - Easterly wind, however, that didn't work out...possibly due to the low inversion, but certainly there was low level wave in strange places mak...

A few tips with some cloudsurfing footage. Huge thanks to Mike O'Neil for his rendition of "Running down a dream" By Tom Petty. The Lyrics Mikes "Running down a (cloud) Street are- It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down I turned the radio off, I was glidin’ Birds flew by, me and The Boss were singin' Runnin’ Down a Dream I was flyin' Yeah runnin' down a street That never would come to me Wor...
Gliding in Snowdonia

Soaring some hills in Snowdonia in a NW wind. The video is a bit of an instructional video with me talking rubbish most of the time. Hopefully this will help visitors who want to come and fly this route. I stop 20km short of Nefyn due to wind (or lack of). So you can go much further- see my video- soaring snowdonia.

Been studying the theory. Fascinates me. Not a pilot. This question keeps bugging me. What is the difference between a successful banked turn and that turn becoming a spin.
Hi Josephine, A spin will happen when you're flying too slowly in the turn (actually it's angle of attack to high, but to keep it simple, think of it as speed), and using too much rudder. This leads to one wing stalling suddenly and developing into a spin. A good turn is keeping speed well above stall speed and keeping the aircraft in balance, ie, using the right amount of rudder. Hope this helps
@@chrisgill12345 Chris, that helps a lot, and puts it much more clearly than anybody else here on YT who posts spin-recovery vids. Your explanation also confirms what I thought the theory is. 👍👍
If I lived closer I would join this club , Leeds is a bit too far unfortunately.
They said: there are bald pilots, there are old pilots, but there is no old bald pilots.
Background music not needed Other than that, great vid
I feel like a recent event triggered this video.
I think it helps to imagine water flowing around the terrain, making it more visible as to what might happen. Good, thanks.
Just bumped into this on youtube. Great video. Had to chuckle as it felt remarkably similar to VR flying those ridges in Condor (where of course you can afford to learn by your mistakes at minimal cost ;-) ).
Hi Chris - What a brilliant video. Very helpful. Could you do a few more ??? - I’m unfamiliar with soaring in Wales - & unlike the French Alps - you do a considerable amounts of soaring not too far from cloud base (which is somewhat worrisome for a pilot in tending to fly in). Some advice on (appropriate) wind strength; direction & local orientation & landmarks would be really helpful to a visitor. I watch (all ?) of your blogs and find myself trying to piece your flights together based on peaks, towns & water features. Would love to visit in 2022. Great vlog. Many thanks.
Thanks Graeme, leave it with me. I only get a chance to do some filming when I'm not busy, which is rare! I'll try..!
So do I need one or two of the three things? And is it useful to have an idea? Or should I not have an idea?
There's always one....and it's always you! Don't worry, I'll bring out a 'how to land safely at Denbigh' soon :)
NOT IN THE FUCKING SINK!
Must be nice to be rich.
What makes you say that? Gliding is very affordable. At some places a flight is less than £10!
@@chrisgill12345 One of those plane cost $280,000 then to fly it you have to pay an aircraft and pilot for a tow ect end of the day you end up paying near $300,000 just to have a little fun. I wished I could drop $300,000 for a weekend trip.
@@BaffinSailor @lonny W You have misunderstood the way it works. If you wanted a flight in one of these, you're looking at around £80 per hour all inclusive to rent the glider with instructor. Why would you pay $300k to buy one just for a weekend? Have a chat with your nearest gliding club, they can give you the information you need, if you're interested in flying.
@BaffinSailor you can get a glider as little as £5k . 10 - £15k will get you quite a decent one. Like most sports you can buy kit to suit your budget
What ship? Beautiful interior!
Hi Brian, It's a DG1001M
Great flight - more importantly, what was in that sandwich?! :o)
If that is the same Rob Vaughan who taught me to fly in 1996 at NWGC then please give him my best.
Well, Hello. Yes, I instructed at NWGC and Lleweni in the Ninties. Might you have installed a consumer unit at my house back then?
Really useful! Nice song as well :) Thx Chris
2.10 He's coming round he's coming round, he's gunna gerra lock on, gimme sum o'that pilot shit!
This video makes an excellent case for moving to wales
Superb video Chris. Well done
I'll be back!
And Up we go !
I would rather it be 25 minutes long so j can see where i am in thd flight?
You can slow down the video and watch it at a slower speed
Great video, we may have seen you, we were on Elidir Fawr at about 1315 that day and saw a glider not far above the ridge pass over a couple of times, summits just bellow cloud base :)
Hey Chris, have you noticed what happens at 1.39 ?
Engine bay doors opening due to turbulence
as a drone operator I'm completely envious this is some awesome footage
Curious to know, whats the pole for on the left of the fuselage ?
It’s the total energy tube. Our variometer uses it to measure the air currents, whether going up or down.
@@chrisgill12345 Oh boy, in my minds eye it was ten feet long, and once that picture formed, it stuck. Doh.
Not jealous at all....... ;)
Poor little fish
I've discovered you on UA-cam ! YES ! I have been interested in some of your flights as detailed on Facebook, but delighted to find footage to complement these. Fantastic and helpful. As a novice to ridge/wave soaring in Wales, what would you say was a "reliable" wind speed to look for in the forecast for a trip/flight up from the south (Lasham) to be worthwhile ? I'm somewhat cautious of the conditions as the higher the winds, the more "sporty" things become & the more challenging the cloud, visibility etc. Please post some more videos. They are brilliant. Keep telling us where you are and how to pronounce all those tricky names too ! Thanks.
Hi Graeme, any westerly wind is useful one way or another here. Follow ‘Denbigh gliding’ on Facebook, I put a lot more on there than I do here. Hope to see you here soon Chris
@@chrisgill12345 Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I certainly will do as you suggest and will be in touch.
Nice flight,I wondered how long it would be before you got name checked Rob. Going to come and visit one day, slightly different now to how I remember GSC operating
Just seen the news about the glider accident in Blaenau, hope your OK.
Thanks, it wasn’t one of the north wales pilots, but still very sad. No one knows what happened yet, I hope we can learn from it
So sad and funny
FAMILY GUY SCENE LOL
Omg our fish made his funeral way harder
Can't believe no comments Chris. Now there is :) Good advice
And up we go !!
Fantastic. I spent many years enjoying RC slope soaring from there in the 80's before I moved to Canada. Did you get back to your takeoff field in Denbigh?
Paul Evans Yep, took a while to find a decent thermal to take us to better conditions to get home.
Very apt song Chris! I'll be up there with you next week. Hard to beat North Wales wave 🤪
"That's the way to do it" If i could offer my 'Ha penny worth... Accurate flying and speed control are vital. This can be difficult if the wave is lumpy, clumsy speed control and handling can be the difference between connecting with the system when the lift, initially, is weak.
Yep, I have many more tips and classic mistakes which will come out in future videos :)
Hello Chris nice Video
Nice work Chris!
Done this trip with Chris a few times! Different each time and best so far was turning Bardsey Island! Chris has an even longer trip up his sleeve........watch this space.
Which plane are you Flying ?
DG1001M
Cracking video Chris. Keep up the good work. Must find time to visit.
Great Video Chris, am sure many more will visit Denbigh, and I hope to be one of them!
Must have been amazing then and still is to do it today !!
S&G Feb 1956 , very good reading
Love it. That looked like a lot of fun!
Epic!
